This doesn't tell me prices of anywhere outside USA and those stay consistent anyway, its everywhere else that could be interesting.
All the placeholder prices for Xbone and PS4 games in the UK are holding at a steady £55 or... $86.7. Current generation new titles at launch are about £45/$70.67.

Gotta be loving that tax on not being american in gaming.

The xbox can do wehatever it wants, if it's region locked it can fuck off and die in a hole :D
It is region locked. Shall I get the shovel?

OT: Well not saying I'm surprised about this. Although a lot of games on the PS3 have been really cheap when bought new, but then again this is for first party titles. Still, I rarely buy new games when they first come out. Heck I rarely buy a new game that was released that year.
Get your gun. I hate region locking, I can barely tolerate it on my 3DS because it's mostly good for international releases actually happening. But region locking is usually very bad for a system in Europe as we can expect lengthy delays because "lol u guyz suck", or some other crap.

I do hope PS4 games don't break the £45 price point, thats really the upper limit of my wallet for games and even then it better be a steelbook. £35-£40 new for things I'm excited for, preferably a bit less.
You should see how I am when it comes to region locking. The only one that seems like it won't be region locked is the PS4, which is usual.

There is no justifiable reason for region locking, much like there is no justifable reason for games to be delayed for a UK release after a US one. This particularly angers me when it's a multiplayer game and the delay is only 3 fucking days.

What, the americans deserve to have unlocked most of the useful stuff before we even get it? Seems friggin fair.

"H-Hey guys, we may cost a hundred dollars more a-and require you to log on once every 24 hours via a broadband connection, but at least we only make you pay the same as you ever did always for games, r-right? It's over, Sony is finished!"

Seriously.
Somehow, imagining Microsoft as a cute, flustered, generally embarrassed tsundere anime girl makes me a little (tiny itty-bitty teensy bit) more willing to not hate them... at least, assuming someone true Xbone-tan like that. :p

WELL THAT'S JUST... wait, that's sane. That's Microsoft actually not making a mistake here, what gives?
We don't know if this is for physical discs, downloads, etc...it would be nice to know what the price of game downloads would be but since discs on the XBone aren't as essential as discs/carts for other consoles then my guess is downloading games would be the same price anyway...

Sounds to me like Sony were being cagey, waiting for Microsoft to say what they were going for.
It did look to me like this as well. Still, I wasn't expecting anything different in this front. Base cost has been 60 for quite a while now. It's one of the reasons why I enjoy Steam sales so much.

But now, I wonder if Sony has something up their sleeves in this front too.

There would be arguably legitimate reasons for doing so. Based on current inflation rates, videogames <a href=http://kotaku.com/5986208/if-ps4-games-only-cost-60-theyre-actually-cheaper-than-ps3-games>are already cheaper than they were at the launch of the PS3.
Not quite. You're citing inflation, but also ignoring the fact that average wages and income have not risen in line with inflation. People have less disposable income now because of the way the economy has been affected by the various financial fuck-ups. While inflation means technically games may not be as expensive, in real-world terms they are just as expensive if not moreso given how average income is not rising as it should be.
Was about to mention this. The buying power of consumers worldwide hasn't grown this generation to warrant following the same rules as previous generations.

So, while they prevent you from being able to trade your games as you please, they keep the games overpriced?
Yes, that does sound like Microsoft.

I like how no one has noticed the "FIRST PARTY GAMES" point in the post.

sure, games from microsoft will be $60, but how much is the next Call of Halo: Battlelines (Need for Gears) going to cost?
That's what stood out immediately for me.

Are we to assume third-party publishers can charge us whatever they feel like for their Xbone games?

So they're keeping a couple things the same, and making everything much worse.

That said, Microsoft may now have a chance for a bit of a counter when it comes to the pricing of games. Whereas Sony is largely staying mum on the cost of next-gen games, Microsoft has revealed that its first party software for Xbox One will be priced the same as on the Xbox 360: $59.99 a game.
Remember, if you wish hard enough X-Box One will end up good.

It would be silly for MS to dictate to other publishers right now what they charge for a game. As long as they cough up the licensing fee to MS MS doesn't really care. XBox 360 games were all over the map too. Ditto for Sony. The $60 for last gen was industry wide gestalt thing with a bit of under the cover negotiation, like gas price fixing.

It would look kind of bad if XBone games start coming in more expensive than PS4 games because publishers realize that people buying an XBone are self-selecting for being more pliable consumers who are willing to spend more. That might not happen because it'd be a pretty naked greed grab on the publisher side to charge $10 for effectively the same game on XBone just because the customer base would support it.

This isn't exclusive to Australia. I've seen plenty of games in retail stores in Norway that, converted to USD, cost about $104.
I just use Australia as my example because I live there. I'm aware some other countries have it even worse.

Yes. Because you can't expect Microsoft or Sony to dictate how much other companies will price their games. It's not up to them.

But I wouldn't worry about it. The publishers and the developers just don't have the guts to increase the price. It's pretty high already and they know it. And I don't think the development costs will increase. Sure, games will get bigger and better, but the technology to make them is a lot more accessible so less people can now do more things faster. Marketing costs might increase, though. That's something they'll need to keep an eye on.

Microsoft announces the price of first party games, hack journo turns it into a speculative article about the competition.

Is $60 for digital download too? Because, if so, that's shambolic.
Microsoft have a history of setting their digital prices at the RRP (so $60) and leaving them there for years. There are games you can buy on live for £40/$60 when they're half that new on amazon with DLC included.

I wouldn't hold out hope.

Hooray, you guys in the states have reasonably priced retail games. Want to come over here where they're pretty much 50% more expensive? If the prices currently advertised hold true we're talking a £15 increase in prices over last gen.

Oh well, what do I care. I have my PC new as of last year and my 3DS. I'm set for a couple of years.

I'm pretty positive I spent damn near 70 on Final Fantasy 6 and I want to say I spent about that much for Chrono Trigger and Earthbound as well.
I'd happily pay $70 for Chrono Trigger of Final Fantasy 6 today if that was the going price.

So it turns out that despite implementing significant used game DRM, MS are still going to charge $60 a game and not pass some of the savings onto the consumer.
This is basically the problem I have with Microsoft right now.

They want to take away my ability
to sell physical things I've bought... fine.
They want to force me to connect my console to the internet every 24 hours... fine.

They want me to be excited about that, well then they're going to have to show how these things are going to benefit me. What do I get from these restrictions.

As it stands so far absolutely nothing.

I was looking at Amazon and the Launch Bundle for PS4 with Watch Dogs is $459.98 (Knack bundle shares the same price). $499.90 for Killzone bundle, but it comes with a PSN+ subscription card Thus PS4 seems to have $60 on games as well. I guess the prices won't change too much. Perhaps MS thought Sony might increase their games. Or figured by showing their prices they would woo people over. Seriously I can't figure how being the same price in game when so many shared titles will do anything in their favor. Since the other system is cheaper there's more money to buy said game(or games). Even if they lowered the price they have those other means to gain money after a game purchase.
