First Trailer For Jon Stewart's Directing Debut, Rosewater

Daily Show host directs Iranian hostage drama based on a true story

In 2009, Iranian Canadian journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari was arrested, imprisoned and tortured by Iranian authorities for 118 days on suspicion of being a spy - accusations based in part on a parody interview he gave to The Daily Show [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/the%20daily%20show] regarding the nation's controversial recent elections. The experiences in prison were the subject of an autobiographical book, Then They Came for Me.

Now, Daily Show host Jon Stewart has directed a film based on the book, Rosewater, with Gael García Bernal as Bahari. The production of the film was the main reason for Stewart's lengthy sabbatical earlier this year, during which time John Oliver [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134952-John-Oliver-Rallies-Internet-Commenter-Monsters-For-Net-Neutrality] occupied his host position.

The film is set to debut as a hot ticket at the Telluride International Film Festival in September before a full release in November. Many industry-watchers are eyeing it as a potential awards contender.

You don't get any movie plot involving the middle east except for just how terrible and complicated a place it is... with the perspective of some white guy there for a brief time; much less with a sympathetic main character from a country that the US government would really prefer us to see as the enemy.

I've been waiting to hear more about this since they started talking about it on The Daily Show. From what I've seen in the online rumour mill, it's really good. Obviously I'm waiting until I see it to judge for myself, but I'm hopeful.

Well, it wasn't exactly a secret. Stewart explained he was making the movie before he left.

If nothing else, this should be a movie that will generate a lot of buzz, particularly in post-Ahmenajad Iran.

I got a weird error report that said that in the 3 hours since this story was posted the thread apparently had over 140 PAGES of comments and that post traffic was overflowing. If it were true, it might have meant people really really love John Stewart and I'd have been so happy to hear it.

Did you HAVE to go there? Every time I'm paying attention, it's not the Liberals that are always talking as if ALL people of Islam are extremist. Then again, it's rarely the Liberals that are known for accusing others for their own biases and mistakes (aka "Projecting"), but I'm sure that's Obama's fault too somehow.
