First Trailer For Jon Stewart's Directing Debut, Rosewater

Daily Show host directs Iranian hostage drama based on a true story

In 2009, Iranian Canadian journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari was arrested, imprisoned and tortured by Iranian authorities for 118 days on suspicion of being a spy - accusations based in part on a parody interview he gave to The Daily Show [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/the%20daily%20show] regarding the nation's controversial recent elections. The experiences in prison were the subject of an autobiographical book, Then They Came for Me.

Now, Daily Show host Jon Stewart has directed a film based on the book, Rosewater, with Gael García Bernal as Bahari. The production of the film was the main reason for Stewart's lengthy sabbatical earlier this year, during which time John Oliver [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134952-John-Oliver-Rallies-Internet-Commenter-Monsters-For-Net-Neutrality] occupied his host position.

The film is set to debut as a hot ticket at the Telluride International Film Festival in September before a full release in November. Many industry-watchers are eyeing it as a potential awards contender.

Looking forward to seeing this, as such a big fan of Jon Stewart I am interested to see the final product of what he has poured so many hours into.

That actually looks interesting. You don't get any movie plot involving the middle east except for just how terrible and complicated a place it is... with the perspective of some white guy there for a brief time; much less with a sympathetic main character from a country that the US government would really prefer us to see as the enemy.

Ah, so this is why Jon Oliver took over The Daily Show for a bit..
Never bothered looking too deep into why that was, for I had left my addiction to political driven media.
It was just getting messy, unpleasant and hard to laugh at but really when is it never...

I've been waiting to hear more about this since they started talking about it on The Daily Show. From what I've seen in the online rumour mill, it's really good. Obviously I'm waiting until I see it to judge for myself, but I'm hopeful.

A minor point: that sabbatical was last year (like he came back a year ago next week).

Well, it wasn't exactly a secret. Stewart explained he was making the movie before he left.

If nothing else, this should be a movie that will generate a lot of buzz, particularly in post-Ahmenajad Iran.

I got a weird error report that said that in the 3 hours since this story was posted the thread apparently had over 140 PAGES of comments and that post traffic was overflowing. If it were true, it might have meant people really really love John Stewart and I'd have been so happy to hear it.

The best bit on when he came back was seeing Oliver off and Stewart was pissed how he missed out on the summer being full of the fun crazy stuff like Paula Dean and Anthony "Carlos Danger" (DAIN-JA!) Weiner.

I would like to point out to you this film is about a man who was arrested and tortured by the Iranian government in 2009.

Perhaps if you actually read something instead of reciting liberal received opinion you might find out why the Islamic fundamentalist is regarded as enemy

Last nights Daily show actually showed a couple more clips, like a re-cut of the 'interview' with Jason Jones that was used as "evidence" against the guy which was pretty good as well

Is it strange that I heard Mystikal in my head and did a little bit of a dance as soon as I read this?

The governments are enemies with each other, not the people. Course the average Joe is incapable of making such a distinction.

Hopefully Stewart can make some levity of this situation with a joke like, "'Then They Came For Me' is also the name of the bukkake porn I'm directing as told from the point-of-view of the female actress."

Nope, not at all.

I didn't know who sang the song until after Jon Stewart came back, and I looked it up.

Calm down you lion, all I said was they would prefer if people saw Iran as the enemy, not if they are or not.

Did you HAVE to go there? Every time I'm paying attention, it's not the Liberals that are always talking as if ALL people of Islam are extremist. Then again, it's rarely the Liberals that are known for accusing others for their own biases and mistakes (aka "Projecting"), but I'm sure that's Obama's fault too somehow.

I know you won't understand, however, and you'll soon retort with a string of ad hominem attacks (ie call me a socialist or something equally obtuse) but I recommend taking a non-biased approach to politics and quit touting the party line as if you're trying to impress someone, because nobody is impressed by ultimatums and baseless accusations (like how everything "bad" in your perspective MUST have Liberal origins or ties) and an inherited political opinion shows just how incapable one is in forming their own dynamic opinions.

TLDR: If everything Liberal is so bad, what does that make the other side of the political spectrum? Just as bad, but in a different way. Think about it.

Iran is nation where its criminal offence for women to watch men playing sport. Fine if you want to support such regime fine but be prepared to be called an idiot.

SUnshine I'm old enough to remember the cold war and the never ending stream of liberals that made the same argument. They all looked bloody stupid in 1989. You just keep spewing the same empty morally vacuous anti American rhetoric. Liberals scream loudly about Edward Snowden but are curiously silent on the Russian government's own internet policies. The Russian government decreed changes to PPPoE and L2P protocols that register every broadband connection with government and requires a anyone using free wifi to login into the governments network as well. Not one peep has been heard, same old moral hypocrisy. To quote, that well know right winger, George Orwell "We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." Liberal thought has degenerated into fatuous anti Americanism.

LOL, are you serious? I would say what I said before but that apparently went over your head. Learn to read or simply stop watching fox news and seeing liberal agendas in every broom closet (w/e the fuck that means).

I suggest that your read this http://labour-uncut.co.uk/2014/08/27/the-poor-girls-of-rotherham-were-victims-of-institutional-anti-racism/ It tells of the 16 year period where the left wing labour council ignored 1400 girls being sexual abused by muslim men becuase they didn't want to be seen as racist. That isn't from the rightwing media, its written by a labour supporter.
