I have the strangest feeling this is a reference to something, but I don't know what. Anyone know what it references?, if anything (other than, maybe, an extremely loose nod to the Cave of Wonders).

I think its more of a general 'ancient slumbering power' trope joke really.

Edit: Slumber is a weird word...slumber...slumberrrrrr, slummmmmmburrrrrrrrrrr....

Thats what I thought to, more making fun a trope than referencing something.

Possibly a nod to Cthulhu, but to be fair so many fantasy realms have ancient slumbering critters of immense power it's hard to be sure.

I was thinking more along the lines of Aku.
Dammit, now I can't read that line anymore without hearing it in Mako's voice in my head.

'S good tho. Totally not mad about it.

Aku, though, was originally sealed by Jack's father, yes?
As I remember it, Aku appeared when Jack was a boy and defeated his father in combat; Jack then wandered the Earth to learn as much of the ways of war as he could and came back to fight Aku as a man.

Honestly, I don't think it was referencing anything more specific than "awakening a long slumbering evil".

True, but there was a later set of episodes that acts as an origin story for both Aku & Jack's sword:
