Kristina Joksimovic, 38, was found dead in her home in Binningen, near Basel, Switzerland, in February this year.

According to local news outlet BZ Basel, a man named Thomas, 41, had an appeal for release from custody denied by the Federal Court in Lausanne on Wednesday after he reportedly confessed to killing his wife, with whom he had two children.

The outlet said he had admitted to the killing during a crime reconstruction in March, and claimed it was in self-defence after she attacked him with a knife.

BZ Basel said the ruling from the court held Ms Joksimovic was strangled to death. An autopsy report included in the ruling said Ms Joksimovic's body was then dismembered in a laundry room with a jigsaw, knife and garden shears.

It added body parts were then chopped up with a hand blender, "pureed" and dissolved in a chemical solution.

BZ Basel also said Thomas was arrested the day after Ms Joksimovic's body was found, and initially told investigators he had found her dead and dismembered her body in their laundry room in panic.

I can't help but feel that the sort of person who dismembers, liquidises and dissolves their spouse, then lies to the police about what happened at first opportunity, is probably not the sort of person you'd trust when they claim they killed that spouse in self-defence.

As opposed to things like tying them to a bed and setting them on fire? To make reference to more than one other case of a spousal murder argued successfully as self defense, and a few other failed attempts. Apparently it's a popular choice for this sort of thing.

The lying to police about it usually screws attempts at the self-defense arguments though, see Jodi Arias - she likely would have got off if she hadn't done stuff to cloak that she was going to see Travis, and hadn't tried to conceal she was there. If she'd just butchered him like she did and then called police and claimed self defense she probably would have been in the clear, maybe some mandatory therapy at worst.

Lots of very messy things can be done in "the heat of the moment", often whilst someone is in an acute, extreme mental state. Then consider what would be an extraordinarily protracted and gruesome attempt to hide the evidence after the fact, requiring substantial organisation and effort. It suggests a more cynical mindset.

We might find out the victim was in fact prone to violence, severe emotional disturbances or abusive behaviour. But in the absence of that sort of thing, I'm satisfied that the evidence as is doesn't look good for the husband.
