Fox Threatens Simpsons Cast: Take Pay Cut or Die!

Fox can't support a 23rd season without paying the cast 45 percent less.

Even my ten year old self didn't think The Simpsons was going to be around for more than two decades. Heck, I thought the Christmas special [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpsons_Roasting_on_an_Open_Fire] was funny and all but I firmly believed that America wasn't ready for a prime time cartoon. Like the rest, I was dead wrong. Even though the quality hasn't been at its mid-90s level for a while, The Simpsons remains a pinnacle of American satire that's been aped by everyone from Mike Judge to South Park to Seth MacFarlane. Unfortunately, the series' ratings can no longer support paying the six main cast members who voice the majority of the characters on the show their $8 million annual salary. Unless they each accept a pay cut, Fox executives would be forced to cancel the show even though such a drastic move would be bad for all parties involved.

"23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world," Fox said in a statement yesterday. "We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model. We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come."

Dan Castellaneta (Homer, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, and others), Julie Kavner (Marge and others), Nancy Cartwright (Bart and others), Yeardley Smith (Lisa), Hank Azaria (Moe Szyslak, Chief Wiggum and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon), and Harry Shearer (Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, and others) earn their salaries for providing the voices for the 22 episodes each year, but they claim that Fox makes billions of dollars from syndication and merchandising.

The cast wonders why the paycut is necessary and have offered a counter-proposal to take a 30 percent paycut in exchange for a portion of the profits from syndication. "The show has made billions in profits over the years and will continue to do so as far as the eye can see down the road," said "an insider" from the negotiations as reported by the The Daily Beast. "The actors are willing to take a pay cut of roughly a third, but that's not good enough for Fox."

When contract negotiations plague a 23rd season of a cartoon, no one wins. Perhaps it's time to let the series end.

Well, as much as I love The Simpsons... I prefer them in the 90's, so, I don't think I'll miss 'em.

Curse Fox's sudden yet inevitable betrayal!

Yeah, I really don't have any strong feelings towards the Simpsons, and I wouldn't feel bad to see them stay or leave to be frank. The only thing I can really say is that hopefully this raises awareness about how Fox handles their shows (and hopefully causes their stock to take a karmatic hit).

Jesus H. Christ. Quit your bitching and take the paycut. Give that pay to a middle class citizen and they can probably squeeze many years worth of healthy living out of that. FFS.

So is this paycut so that they can afford to recommission Arrested Development? 'Cos if that's the case then I'm behind it.

Call their bluff.

If they fold, well great the actors get some syndication profits.

If they do kill The Simpsons, well a 23 season run for a cartoon series is pretty good.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! [sub]caps necessary[/sub]

The Simpsons were a staple of my childhood and while it may not be at mid-nineties level anymore I still think it is a well written show. I always knew that Fox was run buy a bunch of monkeys shaped like dicks but I didn't know they were willing to jeopardize one of their best shows as well.

Umm socialist much? Don't be bitter because they earned that.

Well, they spoke into a microphone and made millions laugh. Take it for what its worth. Which is apparently millions.

I still enjoy the show, but if it ended there are enough reruns to enjoy it another 20 years. For many young adult's lives, the Simpsons has always been around. Might be odd having that gap during Sunday night. I'm sure Seth MacFarlane can add another profiled family comedy in there somewhere! :)

It seems to me that all good American TV shows are either cancelled early or extended well past their prime and so run into the ground. As far as I'm concerned The Simpsons falls into the latter, for a while now they've just not been reaching the standards they themselves set. It should have ended with the movie.

A 45% pay-cut from $8 million. They do 22 episodes a year, so they're getting around $400,000 an episode. A 45% cut would lower their takings for an episode to just above $200,000. To be honest, they're earning a hell of a lot for voice work. 20 minutes of voice work an episode, if that, and they want money from the merchandising and stuff too? I know it's a massive pay-cut, but the show was running out of ideas about 10 years ago, when it could have easily gone off the air and people would have given it a fond farewell because it ended on a high. Instead, it will end with people complaining about pay-cuts when their pay-cheques will still be pretty massive, and about 10 seasons of mediocrity.

The Simpsons used to be great. If it does die, the send-off should be amazing, so then we'll remember it for something other than a decade of lukewarm laughs and a lack of ideas.

So, if this was true, why is it so much worse than it used to be?

Seriously?

Meh, it's a bluff. They don't want to pay them because they don't to pay them. It's politics. The cast has had to fight to get their pay before and they'll be willing to do it again. The cast agreeing to a 30% pay cut is exactly what management wants. I can't picture Fox as a sustainable network without the Simpsons, but maybe the people in charge right now can. If the Simpsons does go, you can expect Family Guy and American Dad to follow shortly thereafter and be replaced by talent shows.

And as for the inevitable "Simpsons isn't as good as it used to be" comments, last Sunday's episode was pretty freaking funny in my humble opinion.

I don't really want it to end. Sure it's not as good any more, but it's Simpsons. It's been around longer than I have, it's always been there. It's equivalent to TV for me, I don't want it to end. You've made enough money, take the cut.

I kind of hope this cancels the show. It probably needs to end and not destroy the goodwill created from the earlier seasons.

For $200,000 an episode switch that to GBP which is £129,160.

I'd be more than happy to work for £2.8 million a year.

I'd even work naked.

Hrmm, the weird thing about this is that if this had happened 4 years ago I wouldn't care since it was pretty bad then but recently its been getting better, not mid 90s good but pretty good all the same. Ultimately I hope fox breaks since fox tried to do this to the futurama cast also so fuck em.
