Assassin's Creed: Syndicate & Faeria will be free at Epic Games Store until February 27th. As always, you can get the game through the link above, or straight from the Epic Games launcher. Either way, the game will be added directly to your Epic Games library.

Also, while I haven't tested this, I assume AssCreed will also require Uplay, since all other Ubisoft titles on the Epic Store seem to need it.

You know, I'm torn. On the one hand, I felt Assassin's Creed kinda lost the magic at 3, and I try to avoid adding more launchers to my library (I already have Steam, Twitch, Uplay, Origin, got Bethesda's launcher when they gave away Morrowind...). On the other hand, I gave Black Flag a whirl, I grabbed Unity when Ubisoft gave it away in the wake of the Notre Dame fire, and I seem to remember Syndicate getting relatively good reviews. So...I don't know whether that ends up netting more on the pro side or con side to scoop up this giveaway :/

You know, I'm torn. Syndicate is fine, it's solid, it's serviceable. It doesn't particularly stand out but it's far from terrible. It's the last of the old-school AC games before Origins and Odyssey became the new formula for the series. Free is a good price for it. I wouldn't pay more then 20 regardless.

On the bright side, the big assassination missions are fun, giving you a big location, a target, a list of suggested(but optional) side objectives to help with the main one and letting you have at it. London is fun to explore and looks great. Also, the Dreadful Crimes DLC is a fun ode to Sherlock Holmes mysteries that has nothing to do with the main game and honestly had one of my favorite side quests int he entire game(Solving the murder of a man who literally half a dozen people wanted dead because he's such a shit. Called "The most hated man in London").

The big downside is that the plot isn't much to speak of(something something POE, Jacob forms a gang, etc) the game starts out with the implicit premise "The Templars control London and thus the entire British Empire and this is very bad for everyone" and yet does almost nothing with it. You free some child labor workshops and there's a little discussion of the subjugation of India but beyond that the worst parts of 19th century Imperialism and Industrialization just don't exist. Fuck, Karl Marx shows up and is basically a quest giver as opposed to....say, the co-founder of Communism.

Even more disappointing, the Present Day story is a setup for what was supposed to be the conclusion of the Juno threat....which is then resolved off-screen in a comic and is barely ever mentioned again in the next few games.

I am disappointed the blurb doesn't even mention Evie, who is the other main character and far more likable then Jacob ever was. Mostly because Jacob is little more then a thug who constantly makes messes in the game and Evie spends much of her time cleaning up his messes. It's a shame Jacob gets like three missions for every one Evie gets despite his rampant idiocy(but unlike Edward from Black Flag, he's not nearly as likable).
