The effort is appreciated, sir. Have tried demos for both games, and both were enjoyable enough to warrant a free download.

My biggest question would be, how are they able to offer free games, assuming each are the ?full? games? Are they mostly trying to bolster their platform?s user base? I?m not familiar with how common this practice is. The only other thing I?ve gotten ?free? was the base game for DOA5 on Steam.

I'm guessing they're eating the cost of the games in hopes that when people go to the store to claim the game, they'll see something they like and buy it while they're there. Or as you said, drive traffic to the storefront.

Granted, Steam has been doing Deep Discounts from the start and they've more then made up for it as far as profits go so I imagine there's something to this. I know it's a bit more complex then that but I'm not up for doing a bunch of research on the subject just now.

Those deep discounts are no where big as they used to be. I hoped the competition would encourage Steam to try again, but alas no. Still as bad as it's been the last few years

I'd say Dalisclock is on the money. Epic had already said they ate the cost of the discounts during their summer sale. They probably get their giveaways in this way too. Basically, throwing their Fortnite money at it. Probably to get people to visit their store and perhaps buy something. Also, when asked why they stick with Steam people often answer with "because it's where my library is", so I'm guessing Epic is giving people a games collection up front so they'll feel invested in the platform and stick around.

As for how common they are, all in all, I've posted roughly 40 freebies this year so far, with over half from Epic, while the rest were spread across Humble, GOG, Uplay (no, really) or directly from the dev/publisher itself through Steam. Of course, you know, I AM actively looking for them. Most of it is indie games and/or older games, but free is free, and I don't play favorites so long as the giveaway meets a few basic requirements.

You ever look at a game and think "This is only free so they'll buy more microtransactions" Yeah looking at you For Honor....

So, the biggest question then would be, are the free games worth having to install the Epic launcher/platform? Hmmm.

Depends on what you expect, I suppose. If you want (relatively) newer games or AAA stuff, then no.

but it might be for someone who doesn't buy games very often and who doesn't mind that they'll be getting mostly older indie games. Not every game giveaway will be to everyone's liking, but so far they've all been fully functional games ranging in quality from decent to great.

Alan wake was excellent game. Infact is best third person survival horror game.

get it.
Is it really survival horror though? I like the writer?s angle and the usage of a light as a gameplay mechanic, but from the demo I didn?t get that impression.

It's closer to the mechanics of Max Payne with a horror theme going on, but instead of bullet time you have to shine a light on enemies to be able to hurt them. Which is a cool idea, but it means you spend a lot of time pointing your flashlight at enemies before/while shooting them and you have to pick up new batteries for said flashlight nearly as often as you pick up more ammo,as the batteries drain far faster then the ones in real life.

It's a fairly good game, and it has it's charm, but I don't think it's as clever as it seems to think it is and Max Payne(any of them, even 3) had better atmosphere then Alan Wake did.

And if you wonder why I keep comparing Alan Wake and Max Payne, it's because it was the same studio(and the first game made after MP2) and it's fairly obvious.

They've also got a 1 year exclusive that I'm looking forward to, The Outer World's. Love or hate it but exclusives influence my choices. Probably be the only game I pay for on Epic though lol.

Have you seen their newest upcoming game, Control? I'm not sure what to think of it so far. It seems like it's missing something. Plus it bears numerous unfortunate visual similarities to another game, called Past Cure.
