Friday Box-Office: Maze Runner Outruns All Competition

Young-adult sci-fi tops box-office again as Fall movie season begins

Teen-oriented science-fiction proved a stronger draw than gruff older action stars and tragicomic families at the weekend box-office, with since August [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137545-Escape-to-the-Movies-The-Maze-Runner-Wheres-a-Minotaur-When-You-Need-One] where the top three films were all debut releases.

By that same token, Guardians of The Galaxy, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9615-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Surprise-This-Movie-Rocks] the year's top-grossing film so far, is now set to slip out of the top three for the first time since it was released eight weeks ago. Last week's other top earners, No Good Deed and Dolphin Tale 2, made predictable modest drops to fourth and fifth place.

Many analysts are looking at next week to have a significantly larger box-office impact overall, with a pair of high-profile releases in the animated family adventure The Equalizer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/movie-trailers/7648-The-Boxtrolls-Trailer] both expected to make solid debuts.

This Is Where I Leave You looks pretty good. It has a great cast at least. Tiny Fey rarely disappoints and Timothy Olyphant is a personal favorite ever since The Crazies and Die Hard 4 (I forget the proper title).

Oh great, now we'll get a ton more of these YA-dystopia things. I hate trends like this.

I imagine next week's drop-off will be pretty steep, but all the same I'm pretty surprised this did as well as it has.
