I hadn't even heard about this game before it popped up on Steam but I gave it a shot and I am loving it so much. It's the first game in a while where I've really embellished the story myself, given my crew a backstory, said shit like "SET PHASERS TO FULL" and all that.

http://www.ftlgame.com/

Has anyone else started playing? I'm curious to see what others think because I've heard literally nothing about it from anyone.

The game is so many kinds of awesome! Seriously, it's just great. I'm still trying to decide which weapons I like best (I'm leaning towards the sweeping lasers simply because they fuck up half the enemy ship in one shot) or which methods of attack (going for the shields with missiles/ions, then blowing out weapons is cool and all, but kinda predictable), and I haven't even tried the more specialist tactics lilke setting mass fires, focusing down the O2 systems and so on and so forth.

In fact, has anyone tried focusing down the O2 system with Ion Cannons? Since they go through shields, it wouldn't matter how tough the enemy ship is, you could theoretically choke everyone onboard as long as you can defend yourself long enough...

I've personally use the tactic of focus-firing the weapons systems and O2 systems. It's a horrible tactic if you start to think of them as people.

Pretty awesome indeed, sunk far too many hours into it.
But the hardcore mode only thing is getting to me, each time I loose everything I'm less inclined to go back so sooner or later that will be the the sole reason I stop playing this game.

Oh and for people wondering what the heck it is:

Indeed it is.

This game is good, and the two dudes who made it should feel good.

I really hope they continue support for it. It seems like new ships, new layouts, new weapons and events shouldn't be *that* hard to add. There really does seem like a lot of potential for future content.

Thank you for reminding me of this game. The time I saw its potential, it was still unfinished and the makers just kept showing updates about the game itself.

Yep, bought it as soon as it popped up on GoG. Very fun game, well worth it's money.

Though I'd like to see longer playthroughs (more system jumps)

Wish they'd make an Android version

I've been playing it for awhile now and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love almost everything about the gameplay, but I hate how hard it is to unlock new ships and I really hate that I keep dying in bullshit ways that I really couldn't do anything about (solar flares setting fires in incontinent places, asteroids picking me apart with lucky hits, getting bum rushed by mantis boarding parties in sector 2, having terrible luck with stores, ect.)

Eh, I really like it, but i think it could be so much more. It's made by 2 people and it's currently a great game, so in no way am i complaining, but i think it could use

1) Nosferatu (vampire) weapon. Constant beam that takes off sections of opponents energy and gives them to you. Takes 1 bar to activate, and takes 2-3? from them. Can fail from time to time (should fail around twice in a real time min) and any subsystems using that power would... Explosively fail (gives you a 5sec or so warning to turn them off or relocate power) Obviously in your reactor bar they would be a different colour (yellow probably) and would be used up after everything else.

2) Multiply all damage and health by 100, add a 10% random damage modifier. Doesn't change the game in the slightest, but i want to see big numbers.

3) Going with the previous, with beam weapons, have them keep the same damage as before (1), but fire once a frame, over the course of it's life have it do damage comparable to the average you could get out of them before. This means you don't have to worry about shooting them across the maximum number of subsystems, just place them where it would be the most damaging and let it rip.

4) Much more micromanagement. No really much to say about this, "overcharging" subsystems for ever increasing damage once you take it off? I have no idea, just something seems missing from it in terms of micromanagement.

It is an amazing game, and i will defiantly be playing it a lot over the oncoming weeks, along with black mesa. (and borderlands 2, and torchlight 2... Ergh, so many good games coming out this month)

Edit: Oh, and tech trees. They have a little bit of it in the "burst laser I" and "burst laser II" etc... but i would prefer it if you could upgrade a "burst laser I" into an "II" using scrap, same with every other weapon/thing, in a menu similar to the current upgrade screen. (perhaps a button on the bottom to switch between upgrading weapons and subsystems?) Ditto with crew members.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome.
The furthest I got was the flagship, only I didn't intercept it in time. :(
I got that far using only the starting Engi ship, with additional anti-personnel and defence drones.
Picked up a few 'cheeves for losing no one and using no missiles, among others I can't remember.
Overall, it's a unique take on space combat, and I'm loving every death.
EDIT: As of 17/09/2012 at around 0800 hours, the rebel's flagship was downed, thereby unlocking another ship. Pro tip: use bombs for the drones; missiles are shot down before they can make contact.

Semi-related post: If you enjoy this game you might enjoy the game Artemis: Spaceship Simulator. It's what it sounds like. :D

Going to wait for a demo to come out before I buy it, but it does look pretty good.

£6.50 right now.
OT: Indeed it's pretty awesome. Very disheartening to get really far and die horribly though.
