Full Trailer For Live-Action Lupin III Movie Debuts

Classic anime/manga goes big in live-action

Lupin III is one of Japan's most popular multimedia franchises, originating in 1960s manga and branching off into anime series and feature films. But it hasn't seen the light of day in live-action since the late-70s - until now, in a new feature from Godzilla: Final Wars and Metal Gear cutscenes director Riyuhei Kitamura.

The newly released full trailer offers fans their best looks yet at the live-action cast; which includes Go Ayano as the samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII, Tetsuji Tamayama as marksman Daisuke Jigen, Tadanobu Asano ("Hogun" from the Thor movies) as Inspector Zenigata and model/actress/singer Meisa Kuroki as femme fatale Fujiko Mine. Shun Oguri - who has appeared in previous live-action manga adaptations like Detective Conan and Great Teacher Onizuka - has the lead role of Arsene Lupin III, a globe-trotting master-thief/adventurer and great-grandson of French author Maurice Leblanc's famous gentleman-thief character. While Lupin III remains a hugely popular franchise in Japan and other Eastern territories, it has only had sporadic exposure in the United States, where it is probably best known via the animated feature The Castle of Cagliostro and the re-airing of the 1977 anime series on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The film will debut in Japan in August, with eyes on a broader international release afterwards.

I find the casting of a Japanese guy in the lead role bizarre, as Arsène Lupin III is of French heritage, and the lack of theme song [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNxs_dYG0Ho] really bothers me, but otherwise this looks like a fairly solid film. I'll definitely give it a watch.

P.S. Thanks

To be fair, Lupin III is Japanese by his mother's side, so it isn't that much of a stretch for him to be played by someone Japanese.

OT: Looks interesting. Love Lupin III so hopefully this movie turns out to be good.

Not to mention, traditional manga/anime art style is infamous for rendering all characters as Western-looking regardless of actual ethnicity, so this all-Japanese main cast is a pretty refreshing change!

It'd never do well here in the States. People will look at the title "Lupin III", think "Well, I never saw the first two and I don't want to have to catch up" and skip it.
I doubt it would get a full theatrical release and instead play in select theaters, basically enough for people who are interested to go and see it.

I admit I haven't seen a ton of Lupin III, but I don't remember seeing him physically strike another person even a single time in every episode or movie I did watch. That had been a trait I had always liked. There was plenty of action and his companions were typically skilled fighters, but Lupin himself was not a combatant. Maybe he does so more often in the rest of the series, but it's still a bit off putting to see him delivering martial arts jump kicks several times in the trailer.

I'll reserve my excitement for when we get a hard release date on the DVD in America. The Phoenix Wright movie was supposed to be here last year, and I'm still waiting. Region locks mean I can't just import an Australian copy, and I refuse to watch the versions uploaded on youtube, these are things that I want to support monetarily.

Lupin works on a sort of honor system: no harming women or kids (he always hates having to break that one and usually regrets it later) no killing police officers (beating up or knocking out is OK, though) and everyone else can be shot, stabbed, drown, burned, or otherwise horribly murdered with nothing but a short quip for their troubles.

The only exceptions seems to be the movies The Castle of Cagliostro and Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan. He was on better behavior in those, to the point where the former drew some criticism for it.

The kick still seems a little out of place, though. If anything Lupin tends to punch or nerve pinch people a lot more when he's without his gadgets or gun.

This looks great. The cast seems really good from a purely visual standpoint and has lots of action like the anime.

I am somewhat pleased/surprised at Fujiko's casting. I was expecting a Hitomi Tanaka type, but they found someone less fanservice-y and still gorgeous :3

Fair enough. Guess that just goes to show how little of it I ultimately saw.

Still, the movie looks plenty fun. Looking forward to seeing it.

Looks good.

Lupin III is probably the only manga/anime I grew up with that I can see making a good translation into a live action feature.

That...looks pretty fun, actually. I remember enjoying the episodes of the show on Adult Swim, so many years back, so I hope this comes to the states.

I dunno, I remember him throwing a kick or two. Though just normal, opportunistic front kicks, nothing like the trailer's rolling sobat, admittedly...

If that's the case, I'll will be checking every theater near me to see if they just so happen to be showing this movie...

OT: Also, I'll be eagerly waiting for this to be available on DVD and/or Blu-Ray so that it can go right next to my copy of Lupin the 3rd vs. Detective Conan...
