My church growing up was an evangelical catholic church. Protestants don't have sole access to the word "evangelical"
The issue is "born-again". The word "Catholic" means universal, or all-embracing. There are certainly sets of beliefs that are associated with Catholic religions specifically, but the use of the word catholic is meant to simultaneously express both a universality and a unity to the early Church of the Apostles, and carries the implication that all people are children of God.

"Born-again" comes from a specific interpretation of scripture which holds that you must be "born-again to enter the kingdom of heaven". In modern America in particular, the phrase has come to mean a specific sort of spiritual awakening in certain (often super-church) denominations, by which one is actually "born" in Christ through a personal relationship. Part of the reason born-again Christians are so "evangelical" is that they evangelize to other Christians as though they aren't really Christians. These are the type of people who say Catholics aren't Christian. These are the type of people Mike Pence was hanging out with. They are not the types to entertain maintaining Catholicism in their ranks.

To be clear, Pence was a Roman Catholic who explicitly left the religion to be a born-again Christian. He didn't go to a religion claiming to be "born-again Catholic", he's a former Catholic who switched religion and is trying to pander to both. But where he went to is a) not a place that thinks Catholics are Christians and b) is the type of place to aggressively push Catholics to renounce Catholicism. So when he calls himself Catholic, he knows he's lying, and the people he goes to church with know it's a lie, and they're all ok with the lie fi they think it can draw people to them.

That's what baptism symbolises., which is pretty central to being catholic.
Sure, based on a slightly different interpretation of the same passage, but ask someone who identifies themselves as a "born-again Christian" if baptism counts as being born-again, they'll say no.

I'm not trying to make the argument (at this moment) that either is right or wrong, I'm just saying that those are two deeply contradictory belief systems to claim to hold both of.

You know how Jimmy Olsen had his brain swapped with a gorilla in Superman comics more than once, because they re-used stories and assumed nobody would notice?

How much of that do you reckon Fox News et al do?

Gorillas are smarter than the people at Fox.

How I woukd say it is: that the 'born again' in 'born again Christian' has very little to do with the passage you called on earlier.

They're twisting the words in the Bible to suit thier needs

Andy Kroll, reporter at ProPublica, joins to discuss his recent reporting on Leonard Leo and the new Supreme Court judicial ethics code.

Andy Kroll then joins, first running through some quick background on Leonard Leo, and how he came to completely reshape the Federalist Society into perhaps the most influential legal institution in US politics. Kroll begins with the 1992 Conservative Supreme Court affirming Roe v. Wade in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which ignited an organized spark in the Republican party and saw the founding of the Federalist Society some nine years later, serving to funnel conservative lawyers into judgeships, state offices, and the Supreme Court – provided they completely adhere to the society’s strict blueprint for jurisprudence. After parsing through the central strategies of the Society (centered around networking), and how the Democrats were completely blindsided by the Society’s rise to judicial dominance in the 21st Century, Kroll, Sam, and Emma dive into Leonard Leo’s role as Supreme Court Den Mother, doting on the conservative justices to keep them happy and in line with the Society, as has come to light recently. Wrapping up, they look to the weak response from the Senate Judicial Committee to the myriad SCOTUS corruption charges, and whether the Court’s new ethics code will completely sweep this story under the rug.

Considering the future of a decently influential country is on the line its not exactly ''funny'' but its certainly an event of Dutch anti woke world that invites some schadenfreude. As we know the VVD(Dutch Tories) blew up the last government, their own government in the hopes of getting rid of their progressive coalition partners and replace them with conservative ones. The plan seems to have gone a bit too well because Geert Wilders is now in the lead, above the VVD who orchestrated the elections to enforce their position.

I still except the VVD to win but that their mistakes allowed Wilders grew so strong implies things went horribly off script for them.

Baudet got hit in the head with a beer bottle though, and already having been clonked with an umbrella a few weeks ago. So that was funny atleast.

Given the Fortuin trauma that's actually deeply unfunny. Certainly if the umbrella gets replaced by a glass bottle.

I wonder if the "cancel culture is real" crowd has anything to say about this. Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman have made far more incendiary comments in support of the IDF's actions.

Goes to show how shitty the sequels are and not needed in the first place, how thin skinned Hollywood can be, and that Barrera had done nothing wrong. You'll find a better door Ms. Barrera than some shitty Scream sequels almost no one cares about.

And yet, not a peep from them when a redhead is played by a white actor whose hair is anything but red. Skin color matters far more to these guys than the characters' hair color. Always has, always will.

Yeah Wilders won big and the VVD lost. Not a funny event but I can't help enjoy the Scheudenfreude. The VVD thought they could just blow up the government and comfortably win with a reinforced right wing majority. And then they lost while most right wing parties aside from Wilders underperformed and Labour is in second place.
