so i was forced to do the l.a. aids walk today and a question struck my mind. aside from people raising money from sponsers, wtf is the purpose of these walks? theres no point to it from what i saw except to piss off people and make them wait in line for portipotties. btw, 4 portapotties for 600,000 people, smart. anyone else notice this or is it just me? Oh one other side note, all the trashcans had ads on them for something called "wet platinum lubricant". why would you advertise that during an aids walk?

I guess the scene of showing so many people out together raises awareness and makes people think of why people are walking together in unison. Perhaps the 'wet platinum lubricant' is a sponsor? After all it would go together with the idea of using condoms to prevent the spread of HIV, so it can't be that bad.

I've often had this very same thought. Additionally, I'm curious as to where the money from these events goes exactly. There's plenty of room for waste. I'd rather just give directly to a trusted organization myself.

...I mean...I also walk from time to time...nothing wrong with walking, I guess.

well at least you're not raising it for awareness, that's worse. yes we know it's there just fund the search for the cure.

as for the lube thing, well how do you get AIDS in the first place and certain "activities" that are high risk for allowing you to contract AIDS need lube

It is supposed to create awareness and solidarity in the community around the issue the walk is for. Besides raising raw cash of course.

From what i've heard, the charity works by having people donate so you will walk, think dunk tank charity but much worse for the one in the tank, with the tank being the walk.

Short story shorter: They give money to make you suffer.

Mostly it's to show support for a cure. Lots of people in one place tends to get attention, make headlines, etc. And that awareness may lead to other people sending in money/support for a cure. Really, I don't see anything wrong with this at all. Of course, I also lost an uncle to HIV/AIDS a few years back, so I support just about anything that can help raise awareness and money for a cure. Yes, we know plenty more now about AIDS than we did my uncle caught the disease. But there are plenty of countries without our knowledge, and even here in the States people take unnecessary risks. Believe me, you don't want this disease. It breaks your heart to see someone suffering at the end stages. But I have hope we will eventually find a cure, or at the very least a vaccine. It just takes time, money, and dedication. So no bashing on the walks. They provide an outlet for people to do something to combat a disease against which they're otherwise powerless.
