...so appearantly you can't do anything on another pc if you're not using the PC you linked steam security with...that's balls.

How are you gonna prove that you are really you to steam support? Secret Question? I hate those, I always forget it :p

Should get a authenticator thingy like blizz, I have it on the ipod, not gonna pay for one xD
I managed to get my account back, even though I couldn't remember my password, had changed my bank card, and couldn't remember my secret question. I'm sure you people will be fine.

At the risk of being ridiculed for my lack of current computer cracking knowledge. Couldn't the account be hacked by breaking into the computer and imposing your computer between the victim and their steam account? Like a more complex man-in-the-middle attack? If the identity is contently changing I mean.

If the Identity is static couldn't you break into computer then slave their computer and use it to access steam, change their password and disassociate their hardware identity? Or is the link permanent?

I'm not very clear on the whole SteamGuard thing.

I'm sure if I can think of these ways without any complex computer knowledge past late 90's hacking procedure information then I'm sure the big hacking rings can come up with something better. I'm also sure that steam have thought of this.

If you have SteamGuard, that means the rest of your computer is taking advantage of Intel's new measure. BTW, hacking into someone elses computer is EXTREMELY difficult. spyware and all, thatsj ust gathering info, but taking control of it? Very hard. Know why? Cause you can pull the plug at anytime. Ive heard of a way of working without them noticing, by working off their screen, but its really hard to go completely unnoticed. And that was BEFORE Intel invented this. Now its Hollywood stuff...
Yeah at one point a friends PC started freaking out like it had a mind of it's own. He was panicking like a psychopath, I just turned it off and unplugged the Ethernet. We started it back up in safe mode and cleaned it off.

What troubled me was that his response was movie like, he just waved his hands and bashed at his keyboard as if he was going to scare whatever was doing it.

Good times. He doesn't use shady sites as much anymore, so I guess everybody wins. (Not torrenting, the dude ends up at those stupid "download a full copy of Crysis 9 10 years early!" sites).

MoolyFTW, eh?

Urban Dictionary says it (mooly) is a derogatory term used by Italians for black people... or just "eggplant."

So, is Gabe Newell a secret racist? Or a fan of Eggplant Parmesan?

Only asking him directly will tell.
considering his size, i would say he is a fan of good food, so the latter seems more likely

This kinda reminds me of that Blizzard guy giving out his real name to try and prove that people using RealID couldn't find any personal info on you just by seeing your name.

Incase you don't know the story, it took the forum goers all of 15 minutes to find his address and send pizzas to his house. And that was the tamest thing they did.
They went too far by posting pictures of his family members, including the children. That they took themselves.
Oh, I completely agree. I wasn't advocating it, just saying I think this will have a similarly bad outcome.
Sorry, but when you're *LITERALLY ASKING FOR IT*, you lose *ALL* right to complain when people start stalking you to prove the point. Especially when you're advocating for a system that denies even the most basic of privacy protections to users.

Except that didn't happen. The person they found and did that to was a guy with the same name. The actual GM was never affected.

The GM in question actually gave an interview about the entire thing. They might have accidentally targeted a guy with the same name, but they got the GM as well.

Wasn't there a guy who had a company that "Guaranteed" it could keep your identity safe from identity theft? And to prove it the CEO gave out his SSN? And then someone stole his identity?

Yeah. I have a feeling this might turn out the same way, obviously it will probably take more than his ID and password, but with that as a starting point some hacker will probably figure a way to do it.

Though I have a feeling that even if somebody does do it, the info Gabe gave out is probably a dummy. Probably a legitimate account but no games or anything attached to it, you know, just in case their system didn't work.

On another note: What if I used this system and then years down the road I buy a new computer? Is it not going to let me access my account because I have a different processor?

This reminds me of alot of great innovations in technology(like anything really). Arch-makers used to be the first to walk under the arch when the supports came off, just incase it collapsed, then the builder was the one who suffered. And the man who invented the first real emergency brakes on an elevator, he cut the cord holding him 40 feet off the ground, just to prove it would work. Gabe, you rock.

Nothing is unhackable, you just got to find the right person to get into it. Find out his IP address and I'll tell yah right now I'm pretty sure someone could get into it. If it is based upon the PC registry, then it's also not too hard, you just need to know what your doing.

No one probably wants to bother trying to hack it though, so *shrug*.

I heard Gabe talk, but all I heard was "Here you go Anonymous"
Nice way to test the security measures (bet it's a fake account), reminds me of the LifeLock Social Security number truck (has the CEO's number on the side)
Good luck Gabe.
Just...Fucking...Ninja'd... But in all seriousness,if it was Gabe's real account,he better not do anything to piss Anonymous off,or shit WILL go down

It's cool and all, and awfully ballsy but...doesn't this just reek a little over another classic valve marketing ploy? As in, days later it gets cracked only to have an unreleased game sitting in his game list?

Just saying. This IS Valve we're talking about here. Certainly not above a little trolling.

I don't get it. Now, I am not well-versed in any of this, but what you're describing doesn't even seem to have anything to do with Steam's security system beyond having the word "SteamGuard" in there.

Or are you suggesting that spyware could catch the code being generated by the Intel processor and send it to the attacker (who would also need the user name and password) every thirty seconds? I guess that would depend on how the codes are generated, but it seems kind of unfeasible, especially when you consider that the level of sophistication involved in account theft is usually "HELLO IAM ADMIN I NEED UR PASSWRD" emails.

[sub]Still, if you have that level of access to someone's computer then you've already done all the work. Again, I don't get your post.[/sub]

So now Gabe Newell has outright CHALLENGED hackers (people who are DEDICATED to finding ways around the most complex computer security systems) to hack his computer not only giving his login data but also defiantly claiming that it can't be done.

So, how long do you thing it will take before this comes back to bite him in the arse?

Taking all bets people! Taking all bets!

It would be the most perfect news flash and fail in the gaming industry to hear that someone in fact DID hack past SteamGuard and fucked up his account.
Or did find Episode 3 inside.

I like how this thread is mostly about the typo.
