As the owner of a pair of boobs, I found this pretty funny. I can see how some people might be offended, but I thought the spirit was light-hearted and self-aware.
No, you don't have to support or defend it. You could not leave a comment. I can't imagine you click on threads about video games you don't like just to leave a comment saying "I don't like this game".Jarimir said:The thing is do I have to support or defend every depiction of gratuitous sex and sexuality less I inadvertently label the people that like it as misogynistic or "sex obsessed, testosterone poisoned, boys only club"?
The article wasn't actually inviting a discussion about whether or not there should be breasts in video games. Hell, it wasn't actually inviting a discussion at all!Jarimir said:But we are here to discuss the presence and meaning of female breasts as they exist in video games. Don't tell me that "The Escapist" wasn't adding to that debate when they made this gallery, and I am not the only one discussing it here.MetalMagpie said:No, you don't have to support or defend it. You are telling me I cant be part of the discussion just because you don't like what I have to say?
I think you've got it a bit backwards there. All forms of media have always had sex/nudity, and in recent times games have become part of it all as graphics/pixels have been stepped-up. It was our responsibility as gamers to show ourselves as mature/intellectual/etc and NOT react to it by going batshit insane, either accept it as part of gaming (like all media) OR give whatever criticism we have for said game(s) and move on.Aikayai said:Today's topic of gaming culture and development - Boob

We get it already. Can games get away from this rut or do we have to put up with this stereotype that's being forced on gamers that we're immature 14 year old boys instead of intellectual, progressive types that modern geek culture portrays today?
I am also confused.Aikayai said:Today's topic of gaming culture and development - Boob

And how about you take a break from telling the rest of us what to do and work on minding your own business about what games other people want to play. If I wish to play a game like Dragon's Crown, it is absolutely no business of yours. The choices I make as a consumer are not open to decision delivered down via committee. I don't want a pasteurised, homogenous and sterile gaming experience, and I'm willing to support niche titles that offer developers a higher return for a smaller than average budget. The question you should be asking yourself isn't, 'how can I stop people who like video games I dislike from doing that' -but rather, 'how can I organise the people who like video games that I like to start doing that as well'.Jarimir said:Maybe that's the problem. Most of us keep our porn private, while video games are more of a public choice that are advertised to a wider audience than porn is.Paradoxrifts said:I am also confused.Aikayai said:Today's topic of gaming culture and development - Boob

I mean as a general rule when people insistently nag me to do something I have no want nor reason to do myself, somebody at least agrees to sleep with me in recompense for the inconvenience that preforming the request would cause me. This endless bitching about games like DOA or Dragon's Crown is like having a female friend come over to vet your porn collection so that you can both enjoy watching them together. Followed by her stalking you to make sure you never accidentally buy or consume any further pornography without her either being there or having her approval.
It's fucking inappropriate that's what it is.
Maybe if we kept the more gratuitous and superficial sexual depictions of women out of mainstream games and kept them in porn there would be fewer people to complain about it.
I am a self professed perv. I have had a lot of sex and watch a lot of porn. But it doesn't escape me that there is and should be a separation.
Ask yourself. How did movies and TV survive accusations of objectifying women? Then have faith that video games will survive this as well. Do you get to still watch porn? Then you can get what you want when you want it.
Thank-you for your brilliant display of doublespeak. You should truly consider going into politics because you seem to have the knack for what it requires.Jarimir said:Or... you can stop mischaracterizing every statement about sexism or the objectification of women in games as a paranoid vision of impending video game fascism.
And yet in the exact same post you type..Jarimir said:I've yet to read a post that demands that Dragon's Crown not be made.
Demanding that Dragon's Crown be altered is as good as demanding that it not be made in the first place. It doesn't really matter whether the person making the demand is in a position to make others listen to them, and enact the changes they want. It is a Theseus's paradox. Such a radical shift in art direction would result in a game that was quite unlike the game that was originally released. It would not be the same game. And so asking for one game to be made instead of the other is therefore a demand that Dragon's Crown not be made in the first place.Jarimir said:I also don't see any problem with women (and I have heard men say it too) saying, "Hey, I am interested in playing games. Would it be possible for you to make some games that don't use hetero-male-centric sex appeal as a gratuitous ploy to get me to buy the game?"
And the Escapist is what passes for a progressive mainstream gaming website. Despite that, 61.7% of respondents at time of writing seem to just don't give a fuck. Only 38.3% actually have fucks to give about the subject, with a near even break up of 19.8% for sexualisation to 18.5% against sexualisation. But that is completely beside the point, because it has never been OK for a larger section of the population to dictate to the smaller section what sort of media should be available for consumption. All that matters is enough people want to buy Dragon's Crown to justify the costs of localisation and release in the west. And that is the only reason why it is up for sale in the first place. It's not like the 19.8% for sexualisation in video games has far greater financial pull then the 18.5% against sexualisation, it just comes down to the fact that games released for the Japanese market happen to be a lot sexier than their western counterparts. And when those games are given the localisation treatment for a western release, all it would do is end up costing the company money to make the sorts of unnecessary changes that your 18.5% would like to see implemented and is a selling point to an equal amount of people and that nobody else gives a shit about.Jarimir said:Under the forum topic: "Poll: Let's Get Some Honesty, Shall We? (Regarding Big Breasts/Sexy Female Game Characters)",
You can see many self-professed heterosexual males claim that they are completely turned off and even disturbed by the sorceress' massive floppy boobs. The poll itself shows that only 20% of Escapists want that in games, 20% strongly oppose it, and 60% don't like them but also don't think it's a big issue. People have pointed out that the poor wording and structure of poll is biased AGAINST the last 2 choices, and yet, they got 80% of the vote. Big boobs/highly serialized women is not apparently a selling point for the majority of gamers.
