This thread reminds me of when the Jimquisition first started on this site. xD Good times.

Edit: A lot of the wannabe feminists have not heard of sex positive feminism. Go and look it up people :)
Serious misunderstanding of what sex positive feminism is.
It stresses the importance of sexuality and things, yes, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who identifies as a sex positive feminist, which I do, who encourages the objectification of women in this manner. By that I mean reducing them to a pair of tits.

There is a difference between supporting sexuality and sexual expression and "chicks with nice racks". Something can be sexualised without being objectified, if you get me.

I'm not referring to this gallery specifically or their intent, whatever their intentions actually are, but what I believe you're trying to say in that post.

I support the existence of something that provides evidence that the new leadership of the Escapist isn't so desperate that that they feel the need to try and get pageveiws with pointless teen male baiting titillation.

By adding stuff no one has said they want? or at least no one has said they would consume.

It seems people merely want it simply for its existence. which is ridiculous.

Maybe let Gallery of the Day establish its voice a bit better before dropping any more ha ha only serious clickbait on us?

I'd not have batted an eye if this had come from Grey or Jim or most anyone else on the site, but without the context it just looks like everything wrong with online media.

I have to ask, what was the point of this?

seriously, what was the point of this article. This aint exactly The New Yorker but damn, we have a little more class then this.

we also have internet access, meaning we can get at unlimited pornography, so theres not much utilitarian purpose to it either.

From what I've seen during my time here, the Escapist tends to have trouble attracting women to it's community. Looking at this post and some of the comments it's prompted it's easy to see why.

In my opinion this is a really poorly done article. It's not funny, interesting, or informative, if it was meant to be a joke it's a bad one. Even as just a "gallery of breasts" it fails pretty badly, there are only eight pictures and little commentary on any of them or why the writers of the article saw fit to include them.

I've never really held the Escapist community as a whole in very high esteem, but after seeing some of the comments here I have to say my opinion of the community has gotten gotten any higher. It's not everybody but some people here are just being really petty in this thread.

Ideally, they would have just not posted this tripe in the first place. If this is the kind of content I can expect from the Escapist now then the scary day has come where I start to think I may have been too hasty in dismissing what Anita Sarkeesian had to say.

Ideally the community would have actually read the article before crying sexism.

I mean I can understand how people can be upset over the instigation of a discussion on the importance of artistic style in assessing games, providing examples to give people something to discuss... oh wait, no I can't.

Ignoring the fact that we're talking about fictional video game characters, can you give me an example of something that is sexualised but not objectified? I am absolutely certain that no matter what example you give someone out there will see it as objectification.

Which brings me nicely to the point that there is no objective (scientific) measure of any of this, it's all mere opinion, when it comes to what is and is not sexist in the media. (IRL with actual people - not fictional characters - it's more clear cut, of course)

You mean the thin bullshit excuse to try and make this seem like it has any merit? Yea I read it, but the attached gallery set the wrong tone from the word go. If I want to discus racism in games I'm not gonna go "so lets talk about racism or something, Oh BTW here is a bunch of badly drawn racist MS paint comics I found on 4chan". Also I would like to point out that this thread is less "discussion" and more people going "LOLOLOLOL BUTTMAD FEMINISTS TROLOLOLOLOL UMAD? xD" or as an excuse to just post more tits.

Maybe... this is just, what it said in the beginning: Some questions to start a discussion.

But then - why this choice of pictures? I expected a gallery of how weird some graphic departments went with female anatomy, how awkward bodies looked in some styles and hardware limitations and the question if it was of any importance to clarify "female" in a ruddy art style. A discussion or research or image history along those lines would have been interesting to me. These pictures do not support such a discussion, if that was the intent at all.

If you just didn't know what to write about that topic that seems to be of current interest to many of your visitors, why putting together something that impassionate?

I always get sick of regular magazines using any excuse to put a naked woman on the cover. The title says something like: "The wonders of the mind" and they show a naked woman with fancy sciency graphics around her head... have seen this SO often. This article here feels the same. Cheap. (sorry wor the awkward english. it's not my native language)

Interesting point, and you're right there is no discussion on said topic, but it's disingenuous to blame your opposition when you're just as, if not more responsible for said outcome.

Strawman.

If you're talking about racism in games then yes you would use examples of racism in games, not 4Chan. Just like when talking about oversexualised art style in video games you use examples of oversexualisation in games.

Or are you implying these pictures aren't from games?

It's all about Dante's abs. *sigh* (I'm not much of a pecs girl. I think guys care about them more than us ladies do.)

I actually prefer Dante's face in DMC4 over DMC3, but the kill-joys at Capcom made him put on a shirt for DMC4.

Also, I've just noticed that Kilik doesn't appear to have any nipples in the picture I chose. I always knew he was too tasty to be human. ;)
Possibly, we just like the idea of boobs, so we try to get ours as big as possible in the best way we know how :)

Curious as I don't have it on the pc, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a texture/skin mod for DMC4 that takes that shirt right off ;)

Yes, I had to do a second glance and noticed the lack of nipples on him as well...not human?!?! so he is a robot?

Oh the rage on this thread, it entertains me. I'm going to need more popcorn.
Rage? More like unamusement. The majority of this thread is split into people saying "So this is supposed to be funny or something?" and people commenting on about how laughably "worked up" those people are getting.

Really, I'm more confused than anything else. Is it supposed to be satire? Is it supposed to be interesting? It really falls flat for me in both of those regards. All it seems to me is an article shouting "LOOK AT THE BOOBS!", and judging by most of the response in this thread I'm a stick in the mud for not finding that absolutely hilarious

Oh no, suggestive topics on the internet.

.......Yeah. I love the Hell out of Dark Souls but..."Amazing Chest Ahead". The only half defense that I have is that she's supposed to be a fertility goddess, and even as I type I realize how pathetic that defense is.
On that topic, the apparent story behind Gwynevere is that Hidetaka Miyazaki planned for a more refined and elegant design, but according to Miyazaki when he saw her design "...the artist had such a happy look on his face that I didn't have the heart to stop him."

So people being asshats and and imagining up a bunch of nonexistent mad feminists to laugh at is somehow my fault? Even though I didn't post till low on the second page, well after it started, and was at no point actually mad, simply unamused and disappointed?

No, but blaming the "asshats" when the topic was derailed from the get go [literally the first 5 posts] by those that would rather jump to the conclusion that said topic is sexist, rather than discuss sexism, further perpetuating the lack of any real discussion is.

The thread was derailed when the OP deiced to toss in a throwaway paragraph trying to make it out like this was meant to provoke discussion the spend much more page space going "LOOOOOK BOOOOBIESSSSS". Oh and I don't buy your excuse of try to pass them off as "examples". I think its safe to say that 99.99% of people who use these forums know what Laura croft and Samus look like, or are at least aware of the Dragon's Crown controversy. "example images", (on the off chance that was the actual intent, which I doubt) were not necessary.
