Game of Thrones Facebook Game Enters Open Beta
Game of Thrones Ascent will feature quests, land management and player cooperation/competition.
Are you one of the many fans having trouble waiting for Game of Thrones to return to television? As of today you can go to Facebook to get your fix of the Seven Kingdoms. Game of Thrones Ascent, developed by Disruptor Beam, in partnership with HBO Global Licensing, has launched an open beta. Curious players can now access the game at their convenience to test out the current build and experiment with new features as they're added.
The game takes place during the reign of King Robert Baratheon and puts the player in the role of the ruler of a noble house vying for influence in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. In gameplay terms this amounts to taking on quests, upgrading and developing your personal lands and swearing allegiance to one of the great houses (Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Greyjoy or Targaryen) that stand at the center of the Game of Thrones universe. The game also promises cooperative and competitive mechanics that will allow players to work together to overcome goals or fight against each other for resources and influence.
Game of Thrones Ascent is the latest in a series of ongoing attempts to translate George R.R Martin's fantasy world into a gaming experience. The first, Game of Thrones Genesis was a real-time strategy title that earned some praise for its focus on deception and subterfuge but <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9169-A-Game-of-Thrones-Genesis-Review.2>fell short in the combat department. The second, simply-titled Game of Thrones, enjoyed a quality story hampered by the fact that everything else in the game was pretty much broken. Given the lack of success in producing a Game of Thrones title for hardcore audiences, it will be interesting to see how coupling the Seven Kingdoms to a simpler experience will pan out.
