Game of Thrones Season 3 Teaser Sizzles

The new cast members introduce themselves, and gush about the show.

I'm rereading the books by George R. R. Martin right now, I just played the Game of Thrones board game, we were talking about the tabletop RPG from Green Ronin in the office today, and I just watched a couple of new video features on the upcoming season on HBO.com. I'm swimming in Game of Thrones material right now and loving every minute of it. Although season two departed from the books in a couple of small but significant ways - check our podcast on the show to see what we thought [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escapist-podcast/5938-Bonus-Game-of-Thrones-Cast-Season-2-Wrapup] - I'm still very excited to see the third book A Storm of Swords dramatized on the small screen. The first video from HBO highlights what's to come in season three and, briefly, let me travel to faraway places like the Riverlands, Slaver's Bay and beyond the Wall.

Showrunners David Benihoff and D.B. Weiss agree season three is the core of the story, because A Storm of Swords has so much happen in it. The video is full of bombastic prattling about how great the show is, but there's a few glimpses of scenes I can't wait to see. Cersei and Margeary walking down the steps before the Iron Throne, Arya and Gendry watching the Hound fight - I assume - and the Queen of Thorns standing in court garb beside her granddaughter were highlights for me.

But there's a couple of things that give me pause about the next video introducing the new cast members - beware minor spoilers ahead. First off, I thought Mackenzie Crook - he of Pirates of the Carribbean fame - was set to play the sellsword Vargo Hoat. He would have been an excellent choice to play the lisping leader of the Brave Companions, but in this video he says he plays Orell. Orell is the wildling shapechanger that Jon Snow kills when he takes Ygritte. Orell's consciousness inhabits the eagle he had bonded, and that's why the eagle scratches Snow's face when he's traveling with Mance Rayder. Crook says he's playing Orell, but Orell is already dead ... unless the show will further deviate from the books.

The other thing that feels off is the new casting for Beric Dondarrion. Back in season one, we see Dondarrion ordered by the still-alive Eddard Stark to go chase down the Mountain. It's a brief scene, but memorable because fans of the books like me cheered the brief gander, knowing his role would be important later on. Now Richard Dormer is playing the Lightning Lord, and the continuity the show has built is diminished somehow.

That's not all. Jojen Reed is too old, Meera Reed is too young, but I'm glad at least they are now involved in the show. I don't know how they will retcon their introduction, but the rest of the story won't make sense without the involvement of the two children from Greywater Watch.

Picking of nits aside, I will be watching season 3 avidly when it premieres on March 31, 2013.

Oh shit son, Game of fuckin' Thrones.

Can't wait to see book 3 make the transition. I admit, I'm worried after a slightly lackluster season 2, especially with all the diversions from the book at this point.

It's certainly going to change that that scene to some extent...

Still thrilled overall though. And do I see me some Reeds...?

I still need to read the books, but after watching the series just recently having wondered what all the fuss was about I'm looking forward to the new series.

Funny thing is that that Locke( the show-character that will replace everyone favorites Vargo Hoat), looks precisely how I always imagined Lord Bolton.

There are some thing which are clearly different from the books (primarily in equipment of certain characters).

and concerning one issue in the SPOILER!!!!!! part, it does not surprise that the actor from the first season would return for the role of Beric. He had maybe 10 second screen time and then to return 1.5 years later for season 3? It also believable that Beric appearances is greatly different from when we saw him first because of the 'states' his body has been through.

Still looking forward to it though.

Was it really 1 and a half years? Even without season that seems a bit long. ***
Kind of a big spoiler and I'm referring to real 1.5 years, not talking about the story's timeline. The work that the first actor did in the first season happened I guess 1.5 years ago.

Very excited, even though the new season is still some way away.

That video introducing the new characters though, is at least a few months old, I saw it ages ago - I'm not sure where your confusion about Mackenzie Crook comes from.

As to the Reeds, finally!! I agree that Jojen is going to be too old, but the actress for Meera looks right on the money, ie a couple of years older than she is in the books. I'll be interested to see what they do with them.

Wow! Spoil some more why don't you?

I've read all of the third book and this hasn't happened so you are spoiling something that's not even going to happen in the next two seasons of the show...

Maybe think before you post? I'm assuming people came here to talk about the upcoming season not have plot points later in the story spoiled for them.

Does anyone know if Season 3 will be covering both books of A Storm of Swords, or just the first?

I wonder if I should save my reading of those until after this season is over (I picked up the books thanks to the show, and am currently almost half way through A Clash of Kings. I just wonder if I should continue going into the books with knowledge I've gleaned from the show already in my mind, as I think that's helped me understand a lot of things that might have passed over my head otherwise.

EDIT: In regards to ages isn't it already a thing with the show that everyone has to be portrayed as at least a couple of years older than they are in the books, considering that some of the things that happen to certain characters just wouldn't be ok to show on TV if they were that young?

Regarding what you said about the previous spoiler
If you've read the third book then shouldn't you know that Arya has boarded a ship headed to Braavos since she gave the captain the coin and said the words at the end of the third book?

I know. It hasn't technically happened yet though. I meant this is more of a spoiler for others, especially if they don't plan on reading the books(although they should because they're amazing so far). Since book 3 is being split into two seasons, fans of the show won't be finding out that information for over a year and a half. It's by far not the worst thing he could have spoiled but it is a pretty major plot point.

What do you mean by both books? As far as I know a Storm of Swords is only one book.

As for my recommendation, keep reading a clash of kings and start a Storm of Swords even if you get there before the TV show does, because it is FANTASTIC!! It is by far the best book on the series so far (I'm over halfway through book 4 right now) and I didn't have too much trouble figuring out what was going on without the show to guide me through it. It really is an amazing, epic, heartbreaking, and thoroughly incredible book though. So please read it!

I've heard that Season 3 of Game of Thrones will cover roughly HALF of a Storm of Swords and that there will be a subsequent season to cover the second half. This is good I think because there is SO MUCH stuff that happens that you'd really miss out on a lot if they had to cram the whole thing into 10 hours of screentime like past seasons.

I have a feeling that this book may also cover a few chapters out of "A Feast for Crows" since the timeline of the fourth book starts off slightly after the 3rd book starts, but before the halfway point of the book, but very quickly advances into the "modern" chapters where new stuff is happening. So maybe 1-2 chapters from a Feast for Crows will be shown in this coming season.

Maybe it depends on the publisher, but in my local book shops I've only ever seen it sold as A Storm of Swords 1: Steel and Snow and A Storm of Swords 2: Blood and Gold. This same publisher also titles book 2 as Game of Thrones 2: A Clash of Kings, and splits A Dance With Dragons into two volumes as well.

Makes sense to split the larger ones up. Books that look really really long on the shelves might put some potential readers off.

Oh the Season 3 cast video? Welcome to 5 months ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.381996-GoT-Season-3-New-Cast-Members#15061591].

Not actually a teaser, if you ask me.

Then they're really in the wrong series with GoT.

OT:
I'm so damn excited for Jaime's parts, the whole hand thing was so damn poignant to me.
Also; The Red Wedding. That is all.
I'm up to A Dance with Dragons now, doing about 150 pages a day, I just can't not read it. Going to be awful waiting for the next book after reading up to here in a bout a month and a half period.

That's really weird, I've never seen that. I have an e-book version which came all as one. Also I dont think that A Storm of Swords is significantly longer than the others. Its maybe a bit longer, but it's just much much more dense.
