Yeah it's a random request, but I was just thinking of how much more tolerable the sky is on my ride home today with at least some cloud cover. They are an essential part of a game's atmosphere if it takes place outside at all imo.

Criteria for "most impressive" would be combining technical and artistic aspects. So not only should they look nice, but they should act like real clouds would. This would eliminate games like RAGE, since it runs on the horrible Tech 5 engine where virtually nothing is dynamic.

Without further ado, Horizon: Zero Dawn has some pretty effective cloud tech -

I personally don't mind the clouds that much in games. Weather effects like rain or fog however, those really help with the atmosphere for me.

On topic, I doubt there are many games that can match Horizon's clouds. As this volumetric clouds thing sounds like a fairly new thing to me.

Cheating as the game has not been released yet, but Ace Combat 7. Early game play shows them as beautifully done and gameplay wise you will be flying in to them and the ice formation they cause on your wings will affect handling. I'm sure other sims have done this aspect before, though due to them devoting more resources to simming, Ace Combat will likely be the most pretty looking version.

I guess a real answer would be Ace Combat 6, which let you fly in to a cloud, and your view changed accordingly and they were sized like they should be, AC7 will take it's throne if the gameplay aspect of clouds pans out well.

Super Mario Bros, you can walk on them and every now and then there will be a Lakitu riding one. What do you want from clouds in games.

Horizon: Zero Dawn has some awesome clouds.

Skyrim too depending on the day and how rainy it is when you're fucking around, and if their version of the Northern Lights are around or not.
