Gamers Push PS4's Share Button Over 10 Million Times

The PS4's share button is getting quite a lot of use for a feature that many claimed was "superfluous."

When the PS4 was first announced, one of the most-touted features of its new DualShock 4 controller was the "share" button. The share button would allow gamers to share movies and screenshots to various forms of social media at the literal push of a button. Many scoffed, calling the feature superfluous, and unnecessary. Sony has now released some figures detailing the button's usage, and it seems that despite its opposition, over ten million gamers have made use of the PS4's sharing feature.

"Today, we're happy to announce that there have been nearly 800,000 gameplay broadcasts and more than 7.1 million spectate sessions via Twitch and Ustream. In total, that adds up to more than 20 million minutes of live gameplay streamed from PS4 systems across the globe."

And this isn't just people accidentally hitting the button while they are using the touch-screen, as according to Ustream, each broadcast lasts for an average of 31 minutes. These are clearly deliberate broadcasts. Twitch also reports that 10% of all content broadcast via its platform since November 15 has come from PS4 systems.

"PlayStation 4 is specifically designed so people can share their gaming experiences and interest in streaming live gameplay has surpassed our wildest expectations," said Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. "We're very excited to see gamers embrace live streaming from their PS4 system and we look forward to seeing how PlayStation gamers advance social gaming in the coming years."

If the social media explosion this generation has taught us anything, it's that people like telling everyone, everything, all of the time. Sony has capitalized on this with the share button, and it looks like it's paying off.

Mr. John Gamers, what a great man. Sitting there, pushing the same button ten million times. I wish I were as patient as him.

I kind of thought it would be a success for the brand. People do like broadcasting their lives to others these days.

Didn't they sell like 2 million PS4s? That's like each person hitting it a few times, quite possibly on accident every time as it is in a terrible spot.

that was my thought too. How many times were people transmitting on accident?
I've only tried the button a couple times, but as far as I can tell, it pops up a menu before really doing anything. It records a screenshot and logs 30 seconds of game video, but it has a separate option for broadcasting. It's very unlikely the people would be streaming by accident. If it were screenshots, I could understand, but not streaming.

Seems to be pretty much the same article, worded slightly differently, and posted a day apart by different people.

Is this an oversight? or Padding the news content? or an obligation to have X amount of Sony stories a month?

To me, its like having camera on your cellphone. Unnecessary but it doesn't hurt to have.
And 70% of the use will involve penises.

...Yeah, I know the share button only works with game content, but this is the internet and social media. There will be wangs,

Boo! I do not believe you, nope, nope, noooooooooop! Have you ever seen a late night gaming session with the PS4?! It is primarily a mad dash to ditch the share-menu every few seconds.

this

Reporting meaningless statistics released by each console on what seems like a daily fricken basis is getting REEEALLY annoying newsroom. These are obviously just moves by both companies to release more PR (The source is called PR News Wire for crying out loud). This isn't news. If you're gonna do some statistics, gather a bunch of different numbers from both sides and release/compare them in one article. Otherwise this is just advertising, not news.

Considering there are only 2 million PS4's out there, I think you might want to edit this bit, this makes it sound like 10 million individual human beings have used the feature rather than the same group of 2 million users repeatedly using the share button :p

OT: cool, but I don't really care to be honest. If people like using the feature, great! But I really don't think its a system seller... I doubt many people decided to get one simply because posting to Facebook is a little easier on the PS4.

That's nice Sony. Now tell us some sales figures please. I'm more interested in seeing how many machines you've sold rather than how much people have been using gimmick of the week. Same goes for you Microsoft, I know you're reading.

unelss you got a decent camera on your cell phone, then you no longer need to carry a seperate camera everywhere. which is useful.

There are people who love all statistics they are reporting. Like me. So dont click on it if you dont like it and let those that like it enjoy it.

It's actually 15 minutes of game video (and a screenshot) that is being saved, not 30 seconds.

EDIT: Oops, fudged the quote. Should be fixed now.

Huh. Fair enough. As I said I've only tried it a couple times. I seem to recall reading it was only 30 seconds, but obviously I was misinformed/misremembering.
