Gamers Suffer From 'PlayStation Palmar Hidradenitis'

The British Journal of Dermatology has described a new skin condition caused by excessive gaming that it has named "PlayStation palmar hidradenitis." No, we're not joking.

Doctors at the University of Geneva were puzzled when they examined a 10-year-old girl and found that she had sore red lumps on her palms - a condition known as "idiopathic eccrine hidradenitis." Curiously, the condition was only found on her hands - a puzzlement, to be sure, given that idiopathic whatchamacallits is strongly associated with heavy exercise and sweating, and is usually found on the feet.

Upon learning that the girl was an avid gamer, though, the doctors began to suspect that her affliction was related to her daily gaming sessions - specifically, her "tight and continuous grasping" of the console's controller.

Nina Goad, a member of the British Association of Dermatologists, said that her fellow dermatologists should keep this case in mind in the event they encountered any patients with similarly unexplainable conditions, according to the BBC report [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7907489.stm?lss].

Goad added that the condition was easy enough to prevent: "If you're worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don't play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating."

Apparently, it's similarly easy to cure: the young girl in question recovered after ten days of - *gasp!* - not playing videogames. Who knew?

Despite the name of the condition, there is no word on whether or not the console in question was actually a PlayStation - one would assume this is not a problem endemic to the DualShock family. So Wii and Xbox owners, beware - you aren't immune!

You don't hold the controller tight. There is the problem right there you grasp the controller lightly, but not enough to let it fall out of your hands.
*face-palm*

huh, i wonder if any idiotic politician will get their hands on this info and use it inappropriately by exaggerating why and how this happened to make stupid people blame their kids health issues on video games?

I seem to recall a manufacturer making controllers several years ago with internal fans and little air vents in the grips to alleviate "sweaty palm syndrome" or whatever you want to call it. I wonder if those're going to make a comeback now?

They shouldn't name it after Playstation, but all the Consoles in General as I'm sure I could get the same thing from playing my Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360.

Playstation gives you hand disease, Wii breaks your bones...

It's still safer than being outside.

Don't button mash, kids.
Also, who remembers that one mini game in Mario Party? With the Shy guy?
Few kids at my old school showed up with actual wounds and blisters on their hands because of it. (Including me :p)

Nah, in the very same article it's shown that this condition is more common for people who exercise regularly and work up a sweat. You can't sanction one and not the other, and why would they change their sport policy to something less? That'd make them look bad!

while i hate to point it out most politicians are pretty stupid in regards to video games believing they make anyone who plays them into violent sociopaths. I mean how many times have you heard a politician speaking about video games and not make himself either look stupid by exaggerating content or going completely out of context on the subject

tight and continuous grasping...

Christ, i have a childish mind, but on a more serious note, if they're going to start naming diseases over these things, then god help us, wherever he is

No-one here's heard of Wii Shoulder?

I've got it once, and it's painful. However, you get used to it, especially after playing tennis on Wii Sports excessively.

It's not really a big deal.

OT: Ten fucking days? You call that a simple cure?
I call you a madman.
Ten days seems like a harsh sanction imposed by the parents. Couldn't she use talc and still play. Maybe she's just a sweaty kid.

Her parents shouldn't dare get her a Wii after all the jumping around her parents will find her reduced to a pool of water.

I totally got that from playing Wii Baseball. Swinging the arm with no weight on it is pretty dangerous and it seems you get the same result from a small hand movement. I was in pain for a couple of days for nothing.
