In my opinion, adding zombies to things doesn't make a game idea original or innovative, and I completely disagree that fun is always more important than story, or that games should always fill a different niche to books and films.
In answer to your question: "game designers are perfectly capable of coming up with good game ideas, there's nothing wrong with them in that regard". Another answer could be: "clients/publishers/executives/market forces."
