With Cuphead finally on the way to release, we of course will have some games journalists covering the title. And so far things look great, except for one man's experience. Dean Takahashi, a games journalist who's made his name in the medium for over 25 years, somehow got stuck at the tutorial level for the side-scroller. The game showed you how to jump, how to air dash, and showed guiding arrows in order to gain height and move over a tall obstacle. Video showed Dean failing this by jumping directly at the wall for over a minute, before he suddenly seems to get how the game works and made the jump. Even getting the air dash timing right was a struggle though.
One of his most recent tweets [https://twitter.com/deantak/status/904397883272708096] points out "It didn't say, 'Stand on rock, which is farther away, because dash will take you higher and farther than you can jump.'" Amazing. Other sources show Dean had to re-play Mass Effect after giving it a scathing review, all because he didn't know how to allocate talent points Here's an archive of his apology [https://web.archive.org/web/20080102151117/http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2008/01/a_massive_mea_culpa_and_apology_for_a_bad_mass_effect_review.html]. Takahashi also stated that Warhammer 40k ripped off Gears Of War. "...but the style and game play look so much like Gears of War that it's embarrassing" and "The grunts in Gears of War are derivatives of the U.S. Marine Corps soldiers, re-imagined in a sci-fi universe. So THQ's game is really just copying Microsoft's Gears of War game." Fantastic.
Now we also have other games journalists and various articles trying to defend Dean, going as far as to say those who attack him are akin to "GamerGaters who probably voted for Trump." Yeah, this was a thing [http://dailycaller.com/2017/09/08/game-journalists-defend-being-bad-at-games/] by this man's account on his article he wrote on Takahashi's inept display.
Is it so hard to ask for someone to be competent on the basic level before writing reviews? I don't think anyone is asking for pro level stuff, but this MASSIVE level of ineptitude shown in the full 26 minute video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=848Y1Uu5Htk] shouldn't be possible with someone who has been in the industry for so long, where Dean even failed to complete the first level. The video description states that Dean "doesn't really play platformers or sidescrolling action games. He's bad at them. But since he was the only member of our staff in Germany during the time of Gamescom, he agreed to try it out for us." And then asked viewers to look at his Assassins Creed Origins gameplay for a display in competency. A modern game with all of the modern tutorial stylings we come to know and love (Or hate). Not a promising way to make me believe Dean is capable at his job, mates. Poor guy probably got spoiled by tutorials that explain every last bit of detail and hold your hand the entire time. Welcome to gaming Takahashi, where even a basic side scrolling control scheme becomes a struggle.
Is Cuphead the new Dark Souls?!
A video response thrown in for fun, with a response from Dean himself about the criticism at the 5:12 mark [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l59MaLXJ2-Q]
