Mario Kart & blue shells when you are going to win.

DOA4 and just about to beat the final boss.

L4D and the AI director.

Mario Kart is the most evil game in the world... but for some reason, I can't stop playing it.

Also, for me, Street Fighter 4 got so frustrating. Maybe because I didn't have the fight stick but I swear I almost punched a baby while playing it.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

Past Ticket 7 the AI gets insanely good and can go through rocks or something. Rubberband AI made me want to hurl the disk out the window... until I won after three hours through pure luck, which was oddly satisfying.

My first experience of this was back on DOS playing.. wouldn't you know it, a mario game.

it was a small collection of games that happen to have mario in it, the game specifically was go fish.. if i was getting a winning streak i would notice things like asking for a card, mario saying 'go fish' and then the following turn getting asked for the same card.

the star wars pod racer game was another one nasty about their rubber band AI, because some races you can get a good lead going, but then just before the finish line there would be some tricky spot where if you crash, you pretty much automatically get passed, with no chance to catch up before the finish line.

fighting games, like mortal combat do it too, they get to just pick attacks to use, is it fair to need to hit 12 buttons to use an attack, that the AI can do on the fly? i think not.

The game 'cheating' is pretty common, exceedingly common, because its easier to let the AI cheat than it is to program smarter AIs

Nethack just never lets me win. So even if I manage to get the perfect equipment and play the game carefully it just throws something dirty like pit containing deadly poisonous spikes or no scroll of identify till last floors.

Ahaaa, nooo, I picked water but I was fortunate enough to run into a Pikachu in viridian forest that I quickly nabbed
Cannoy believe that water moves aren't classed as not very effective!! Pikachu was level 20 before I beat that sodding gym!

actually i wanna be the guy is not like that; its very, very difficult, kills you out of nowhere, and probably the most frustrating game ever made, but it is completely fair, and everything works by set rules that can be learned and memorized.

Burn

But back on topic, I think what the OP means is the sometimes magical 'Fuck You' button the game seems to have that snatches victory from you. For example, the Battle Tower in a couple of the Pokemon games seemed to cheat to win, using items repeatedly or getting three critical hits in a row.

Like a typical King of Fighters end boss. the machine actually reads your input so the boss can react to your every move. that's plain cheating.

Tekken 5 - about to finish the boss when he stuns you, drains half your health bar and fireballs you to oblivion.

DOA4 - same sort of thing as above, but add another minute of some transparent ***** pulverising your poor ninja's brain into some sort of grey-matter smoothie AFTER THE REPLAY!

Ninja Gaiden 2 - after tearing the limbs of a veritable army of generic ninjas brandishing sharp objects, what looks like 27 incendiary shurikens fly out of nowhere, embed themselves in your man's backside and leave you violently screaming barely-intelligible profanity at the 'GAME OVER' screen.

Madden does this when you're approaching a perfect season. There's some kind of "Fuck You" switch that gets flipped, and when it does, your perfect season is over. You can be the Patriots playing the Lions, and somehow they manage to pull enough ridiculous moves to beat you. Every single time.

Is this similar to the "Fuck You!" button most games use when they're desperate?
Yes, I'm glad people understand what I'm getting at :)
Also, Mario Kart does this too, but I'm sure every human on the planet is aware of it by this point
Ok I gotcha. While I haven't played the game myself I understand that Street Fighter 4 has a boss character that has a one hit kill move that is unavoidable. I can imagine that happening right as your about the hit the guy with the finishing blow.
P.S. a thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.94567] like this has already been done before, but I'll let it slide because your new :) welcome.
It's not a one-hit ko, it does take about 45% of your health though, yeah Seth is cheap.
I'm going to say all driving games follow this rule

Tekken 5 - If you face Jinpachi on Ultra Hard he does cheep ass juggles that do the same amount of damage as normal attacks rather than the cut down amount that most juggles do. I hate Jinpachi. >.>

Well every fighting game an their final bosses really: Seth can go die, the DOA final boss can burn, that rock guy in VF need horrible things done to him and I've already mentioned Jinpachi.

Ah, the great rubber band AI.

In Mario Kart 64, you'll never get more than half a track in front of an AI racer, and in every MK game other racers will get the best items and get a perfect race when you're in the top 3.
Burnout 3, always fun to get the message "he's right behind you" and the other racer going past you in the slowest car when you're in the fastest and wasting your boost meter.(to keep it simple, the slowest car's top speed would be 140mph, and yours is 200, 250 with boost)

Jinpachi in Tekken 5. First round is difficult as you would expect from the last boss in a fighting game, but the final round(one win left for you) he becomes nearly impossible to beat. Most of his attacks are slow, but that doesn't matter when he can stun you for about 3 seconds and one of the attacks is a big "fuck you" when you don't know you can sidestep. His "fuck you" attack is an energy ball that does more than 50% damage, he also has the option to shoot a second one right after the first.(without near frame-perfect sidestep timing, you'll get hit by the first or second energy ball)

It's lazy programming for when the developers can't be bothered to add 'real' intelligence.

I think most RTSs when your vs the CPU on hard (extreme f%^& me in the a$$!) mode were the CPU has every upgrade in a matter of seconds and a army to rival the empire to take you down.
Ever done this with company of heroes, with the new patches the AI get a lot smarter *shiver*
