Games that you felt just weren't worth the hype

Ok, everyone once in a while a game is released that is surrounded by truck-loads of anticipation and excitement, but when you finally get your hands on a copy and begin your play through, you find it completely dull and not worth the cash.

My most recent example of this was Dragon Age: Origins. I'd heard a lot of good things about the game, and fancied another RPG after months of playing FPS's. Two days after purchasing it, I found myself trading it in and buying Prototype. The same went for Farcry 2.

So, what games did you buy that you felt were seriously over-rated, and equally, what games did you enjoy that you felt deserved much more attention?

Almost every game really, if a game isn't hyped to the point of the second coming, then the PR team hasn't done their job...

Portal, although that might have been because I had to play it on the PS3. Still wasn't the greatest game ever.

Another is The Sands of Time. The platforming was really fun, but when 50% of the game, (the combat), doesn't work well, it can't be classified as a great game.

AvP for me personally, being a massive fan of both franchises I was very disapointed.

To be honest, MW2(obvious), Halo 3, Gears 2, Portal, GTA4, Dantes Inferno.

Yeah, it takes a lot to impress me

GTA IV got a lot of hype. I couldn't get through the beginning, since nothing had happened for over 5 hours. When I finally got a gun, I ended up in some motorcycle tutorial mission. In it, you have to kill a bunch of bikers from your bike. The bike controls being horrible, I decided it was logical for me to switch to a huge ass truck to mow down those fools. I thought that this was possible, because of all the "sandbox do what you want" bullshit, but no, the game gave me an instant mission failed. That was the point where I just simply stopped playing the game.

Fallout 3.

Wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't what it was hyped to be.
Personally I rather enjoyed the game, that may have been because I had no prior knowledge of the fallout series and received it as a gift and was pleasantly surprised.

Good god yes.

OT: Anything with Peter Molyneux's name attached to it.
I swear he lives in faerytale castle land.

Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty 6 (Modern Warfare 2), Battlefield Bad Company and most things that Peter Molyneux talks about (fable 3 might be an exception)

Prey and Alpha Protocol. Prey just irritates me, so un-inventive and standard, and yet people were screaming "It's original! Look at these weapons!" Oh, right, an alien version of Quake 2's laser pistol, an alien choking a chain gun... shall I go on? Stupid game, stupid button hunting, so much hate.
Alpha Protocol is different. So much hype on a game that is essentially a really, really well told story that someone forgot was going in a game.

Super Mario Galaxy, Modern Warfare 2, GTA IV, Halo 3, Resident Evil 5, GTA San Andreas, Bioshock 2, Dragon Age: Origins, Crysis, Gears of War, Half-Life, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy 13, Super Mario 64.

I really could go on and on and on. I'm not easily impressed by videogames.

Super Smash Brothers was not worth the hype

More attention should have went to Ace of Combat 6: Fires of Liberation and the F.E.A.R games(except Perseus Mandate).

How bout spore? I found that game to be a huge pile of bollocks, even after it even got tonnes of hype in the non-gaming media.

Otherwise, MW2, which only got it's hype from the countless CoD4 fanboys looking for $60 to burn. As a non-MW fanboy, I honestly don't understand it.
Fable 2 was a similar thing too. Actually, I guess most sequel games have been pretty bad to me, especially when you're basically repackaging the same thing as before.

I just finished it and found it to be a mixed bag.

The atmosphere and story were amazing, but the play mechanics were broken in so many areas... those goddamn exploding orbs near the end were a nightmare, as was trying to fend off packs of mutants with the shoddy aiming and inability to strafe fast enough to dodge thier attacks.
