Pretty much the majority of animated movies with a game at its side. Kung fu Panda, Open Season to name a couple

This made me think of Spore, while your creature evolves into people, you do play a phase where your an animal, dealing with other animals, and your desicians there have a basic impact on how the other stages (Tribal, Civilization, Space Travel) play out.

Banjo Kazooie's a good one. You play as a bear carrying around a smart-mouthed bird in a backpack.

OMG, E.V.O.: Search for Eden.

That game was amazing. I had completely forgotten about it. It needs to be remade so badly. I replayed it so many times.

There's a game called Altered Beasts for PS2 I think...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Altered_Beast

Yup. It was a pretty gruesome game, you basically are a human who can transform into animals, I really liked it tbh, and the animals feel quite realistic. The setting is... well... it's pretty cliche but it's sorta realistic. If you have a PS2 or whatever you should give it a look.

How about the Pikmin games?

Your character commands an army of Pikmin, cute (yet bloodthirsty) half-plant half-animal organisms that seem to have the mentality of ants. They're small and weak on their own, but en masse they can accomplish incredible feats, like defeating voracious animals ten times their size and lift extremely large objects. They're apparently fearless, willing to sacrifice their very lives for you.

Gameplay is a mix of adventure and RTS conventions, with a few light puzzle elements thrown in for good measure. It's really engaging once you've mastered its intricacies. In fact, I'd say Pikmin 2 is one of my all time favorite Gamecube games.

EDIT: Oh man, how could I forget Space Station: Silicon Valley for the N64? You take control of any number of robotic animals, each with special weapons and abilities. It has a quirky sense of humor and the sheer novelty factor kept me playing for a long time. It's an obscure game though, so you might have some trouble tracking a copy down.

Okami, which I found was really fun. You play some god in the form of a wolf, so close enough.
I believe Amaterasu is the Shinto sun goddess.

OT: The only things I can think of are Star Fox, and Twilight Princess(although you only spend some of the game as a wolf)... but those are hardly realistic situations.

There's an old PC game called Wolf where you play as a wolf. I'm not sure if you can even find it anymore though. This link might work, I didn't look into it too closely. I think there's a service fee though.

Wow, I'm quite surprised people got to this before me, but yes, it's a surprisingly good game too.

You can get it completely for free (and completely legally) here: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/531/Wolf.html

It's probably the most realistic animal life simulation your going to find, and there's also a Lion version on that site somewhere.

Blackfoot! A Metroidvania sort of thing where you play as a black-footed ferret. Or else a mink (which looks like a stoat in ermine.) Or a beech marten (or perhaps it's meant to be a pine or stone marten... but it looks like a longtailed weasel.)

There's also an old adventure game called Inherit the Earth. You play as a furry fox, with a creepy boar and deer sidekick. The ferret village is adorable, though.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeons sort of count...

SimAnt is really fun.

Eek! the Cat...? I remember some kind of side-scrolling game about a cat with a bag that, I think, had a lot of question marks all over it. Can't remember what it's called, though.

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers is a good one!

And, of course, CHEETAHMEN II.

Or a Sega Genesis... Darn young'ns!

Anyway, how about... Diablo 2? Pick a Druid :p

Not big on the Wii or most of it's lineup, but this is a damn cool game. It's a 3rd person trantula or scorpion survival sim, basically.

Don't look at me like that! I'm as suprised as you, but I'm not being facetious (mostly); in the armory mode, you can play as a rabbit, evading the hunters for x number of seconds or minutes. A bizarre feature that's surprisingly well executed; get your 1st or 3rd person hop on and dodge the bored USMC guys going rabbit hunting with their M4's.

This. (Sorry if the picture doesn't work, I've never actually posted a picture before and so am kinda new to it XD)

Was an amazing little game on the PS1 where you swam around the ocean as a dolphin making music until you got moved to a different level with different sounds and beats. Such a simple and relaxing game
