Swashbucklers: Blue vs Grey

A decent, albeit a little low-budget, Pirates! clone set during the Civil War, with some steampunk vibes in it, like gatling guns mounted on the ships, or multitude of steam engine types you could add to your ship for a speed boost during naval battles. Had tons of fun with this game.
Ooh, thank you. That made me remember another obscure game.
Also a Pirates clones of sorts. The 90's variety.

Corsairs.

I haven't gotten it to work since win 98 so it was a while ago now.
You did basically everything like in the 80's Pirates! version, but with better graphics.
(disclaimer, I have not played the old Pirates!)

yeah it's not very good, but boy was it fun to hand draw the MC.
I feel the same way. Have you played the sequel?

There was a sequel? I would have thought that they just moved onto Scribblenauts.

Were there any improvements that added depth amongst the literally unfinished portions?

I'm a big proponent of Lost Kingdoms (1 and 2), for the gamecube. It's a card-based action rpg by FromSoft, and it just kicks all kinds of ass. Nothing too deep, but a ton of fun, great level design, and fun-but-limited deck building. Now that FromSoft is on top of the world, I wish...

Pirates: The Legend of Black Cat is another fond gaming memory nobody has heard of. One of the jankest games I've ever played, to be sure, but ambitious as hell. Bonus points for ship combat so good that I was unable to eke a single ounce of enjoyment from asscreedblagflag.

You as hyped for the upcoming Steam release of Way of the Samurai 4 as I am? It's supposedly coming by the end of this year, but Q1 next year seems more likely. (Source: http://blog.ghostlight.uk.com/ , the publishers handling the pc port)

Tough question, I would go with a Eurocom game from the 2000's know as 40 Winks. Silly little plat-former game that pretty much copy's the Banjo Kazooie formula.

Also a prototype of a game that never got released called chickens vs Cubes for the PlayStation one.

If you understand that, then you're one of the few people who've played that amazing game. A game about democracy, permanence, transience, the road to Hell, and the desire to be recognized. A game I love to pieces, despite wanting to flay the devs for creating the Fetch 3.0.

Seriously. Eight of ten people I mention this game to just go "Buh?"
Pretty sure lots of people played that one mate. Hell, Yahtzee did a review of it.

OT: While I know it must have gotten SOME sales on account of it getting a sequel, I've still yet to meet anyone who played The Darkness. What a gem.

I played this, but on PC. Even though I got stuck even on easy... I will still love that game!

Also, I've never heard anyone talking about or even mention the RTS games "Paraworld" or "Rise of Legends".

Paraworld has Tesla leading an army of vikings to fight ninja pirates that ride dinosaurs and are led by Charles Darwin, and that's just your average skirmish match! And even though it's old, the graphics still hold up and the soundtrack is my favorite game soundtrack ever.

And RoL is a fun little fantasy game featuring italians with tech that blends steampunk and Da Vinci, what is essentially Mayan Goa'uld and 1001-nights based magicians that change the standard "Infantry/Vehicles/Flyers" cetegories of the other factions for "Sand/Fire/Glass".
It also has a fun campaign.

Spooky Castle. Bouapha smashes monsters with a magic hammer, collects brains to return to the local brain depository, and regains health with Chinese food. As Hamumu software declares when you load the game, "It doesn't get any dumber than this."

Even my biggest videogame geek friends give me a blank "What?" when I mention Netstorm: Islands At War, a weird mix of a puzzle game and an RTS. It looked like this:

Tetris-like bridge building and fixed siege engines as weapons. I never played anything like it since, it was real cool.

Unreal 2: Awakening (still one of the best endings in videogame history imho)
Played the shit out of that actually, but for some reason I never finished it. I must've restarted it a dozen times. Real cool singleplayer FPS.

They kind of improved some of the game play elements that lacked depth. The story was what had improved the most significantly if you're into out of place biblical references and Cthulhlulian concepts.

It's too bad the multiplayer was unplayable. You started with a single unit, and were expected to unlock more by beating other players...somehow? There was a third-party program to unlock everything, but still.

I'm sure other people have played these, but whenever I mention them (even to people in their 30s) I usually get blank looks.
THERE'S A DISCWORLD GAME WITH VOICES BY ERIC IDLE???????????? AOFIDJSDKFLWEJIJFSNIONASOIFNESLKDSFNSALK.

Just that that existed is amazing to me.

I actually have nothing OT to add. I just... Wow.... Discworld game with voices by Eric Idle...

It's on PSN for PS3. Try it.

You know I'm usually at a lost when I walk into these kinds of threads. I can't say I've played anything too obscure or at least something that isn't talked about every now and then. Even Pokemon Channel is kinda infamous for being bad. I played a few licensed titles but those don't count.

Spyro: A Hero's Tail
Oh expect for this. I played this and liked it quite a bit, my copy was game brakingly glitchy at first but I was able to finish it one afternoon. I wish there were more Spyro games like it. I was a big Spyro fan so I played everything with his name on it for awhile and I picked up this gem:
There is a reason why no one talks about it though, its a bad game but not so bad its interesting like Pokemon Channel.

Oh dude, Dino Crisis... I haven't played first part, but I've completed Dino Crisis 2 more times than I could count. Unlocked every single weapon, power up, accessory and dino in dino-colliseum (including Triceraptops and compsognathus). Damn I love that game.

Also, it's kinda difficult to find someone to talk about this little gem

It was a freaking awesome mix of turn based strategy and action game. Loved it.

And then there was KKND

Probably the only split-screen RTS I know. Both of the games I've played with my brother and it was an incredible experience.

A ton of people will sing the praises of Psychonauts but another game that came out around that same time but was somehow given even less attention was a platformer called Voodoo Vince.

I've talked about Otogi and its sequel and that series is one of the Xbox exclusives that do seem to have a small following but NOBODY else seems to have played Voodoo Vince. Vince is a voodoo doll who has come to life and who must save his creator from a neck-beard. The game is made up of clever platforming, imaginative boss fights, a couple of semi-fun vehicle sections, items to collect etc. This is about as Rare as you can get without having your game made by Rare. The big gimmick for this game is a focus on combat and the ability to use screen-clearing Voodoo attacks. They're randomized outside of boss fights but they're still pretty cool little animations. The game is packed full of some pretty good humor as well. It wasn't all dark humor but remember, this game came out when Invader Zim ruled the Earth and it was impossible to escape the awesomeness that was dark humor. Sadly, this is only on the original Xbox and if you own a working one than you're actually in luck since it's inexpensive. It may be available on the Xbox Live store but I have no idea how well it might run. If you have a chance to play it, definitely do so. If you can't, it looks like someone did a lets play of it. It was fairly well received, Game Informer was the nicest to it giving it an 8.5/10, and Gamespy gave it a 3/5...on Metacritic it's sitting at a 73% so use that information however you chose in assessing its worth.
I LOVED Voodoo Vince. I never really have occasion to talk about it much (and as you can see by my postcount, I'm not exactly a forum regular on the Escapist), but I actually dusted my old Xbox off recently just to play it again. Was quite miffed when the 360 came out that it was "selectively" backwards compatible, and Vince wasn't on the list. I'm still eagerly awaiting the day we get a proper XBox emulator so this little gem (and a few others) aren't lost to the decay of aging console exclusives. I still find myself quoting "Cosmo the Inscrutable!" on occasion.
My one beef though, is the way the damn camera resets itself when you move - and especially, hover/glide.

For my part, I'd say my "obscure" game of choice is Einhander. Fun 2.5d scrolling shooter in the vein of Gradius, et al, bookended by a couple fairly decent cinematics. You could mount a wide variety of different weapons on your ship, swap their positions above / below, and in several cases this would change how the weapons behaved. Rockets would home in or fire dumb, the "Spreader" shotgun fired forwards or backwards, and the beam sabre could clear the screen in a flash by rapidly switching it back & forth.

To be fair, I'm not certain if it's truly obscure / overlooked, or if I just don't travel the right places to see discussion of it, but either way it's one of my all-time favorite games. Even if it did kick my ass pretty handily more often than not.

Oh man. Love these forum questions that make me rack my brain like a fool for hours. Especially when I'm at work and should be concentrating on something else. This is going to be a short list, there's a TON of games that I could think of (better be careful, or I'll start sounding like hipster gamer).

On PC:
*Severance - Blade of Darkness (only recently, more people who played this are starting to reveal)
*Rainbow 6 series - I guess they were played a lot, but I just think I played R6:Vegas2 for a lot longer being my favourite shooter series ever
*Shogo: M.A.D. - (I could be very wrong on this one, it's pretty old)
*El Matador - 3rd person shooter, average but nice, meaningful difficulty and tactical gameplay
*Hellgate London - Futuristic 3rd person demonic action RPG

On Sega Megadrive/Genesis
*Cyborg Justice

PS2
*Total Overdose (fantastic spectacle shooting game, with humour to boot)

X360
*Wet (although I think ZP reviewed it, I hardly found much discussion going for it?)
*Def Jam games (X360, PS2 and PSP)

Lanfeust de Troy on PSP. I picked this up for cheap during a stopover at Paris CDG airport. If you don't know the comic books it's based on give them a try, they are pretty great. The game however remains unfinished (there was a level flying a dragon with shitty controls...)

Somebody mentions Syphon filter above. And ya, for a Sony exclusive title (they are arent they) it really seems like SF is not getting talked about very much. Me? I actually discovered Greg Rucka after playing Logan's Shadow. He wrote that one. So there's another comic book recommendation. Queen & Country by Greg Rucka. He injected some of the same themes in SF:LS.

Indeed. Idle voices Rincewind, and it's funny as all hell.
