Gamestop - Just let me buy my game(s) in peace.

I admit to going to Gamestop and spending far more than I should within them a lot.

But out of all the stores I have been to, I have come to the conclusion that there are two that I am fed up with, and will never go back to.

The first of the two is actually located in the mall I work at - which made it a convenient place to go to after work hours, but... it seems every time I go there, I end up leaving irritated and-or upset over one thing or another; and it always has to do with the employees.

See, I do NOT go into the store with the desire to be made at all awkward/uncomfortable when all I want to do is go in, peruse and buy game(s).

Yet it seems that's the only thing that ever happens to me with this store.

Latest incident?

I wanted to get this game, and I wanted to get it new - now, as I'm sure everyone more or less knows, Gamestop tends to have on the shelf 'New' games that are out of the shrink wrap and all that jazz; and, while some of them have more copies on the shelf that are in the plastic, still, the shelved copies tend to be their only copy of 'New' games.

The game I wanted, I wanted to get it in the plastic, and so I asked if they had it - It was considered a popular game, so I figured chances were good that they still would. Luck had it that they did.

Yay, right?

Nope.

Instead of just being able to purchase the game and head on home, instead I am forced to endure near ten minutes of one of the employees drilling me and questioning me on why I 'have' to have the game new, and in the plastic.

Cue awkward feelings and a feeling of being just plain uncomfortable.

I tried to explain that, due to some OCD I have, that when I can, I have to get games new (and sealed) if at all possible; Or, if not new/sealed, at least as like new/mint as possible... there's nothing wrong with that, is there? It wasn't hurting him, or anyone...

Yet he had to continue getting on my case about it, making me feel like I'm some idiot because of what I felt more comfortable with, claiming that it's stupid because one could buy the same game used and save money as well as 'get more' out of it.

Blah, blah, blah.

Plus, when the person ringing up my order FINALLY ran it through and all, she made fun of the fact that my PIN number is so long (twelve digits).

Scenario Two:

Happened a while ago, but I'm curious to hear if anyone else has had this happen to them?

Background: I tend to be rather anal/picky/obsessive when it comes to buying games used. If I get it used, the case has to be in excellent/mint condition with original artwork and HAS to come with original manual... Disc also, preferably, is as near mint as possible, meaning little to no scratches.

I know, what's the point in buying used if I'm going to be such a freak about it, right?

Still.

Anyways.

So at this one Gamestop, I picked up a few games including Grand Theft Auto III (It was $4.99 - keep that in mind, it IS relevant.)

I went to purchase them, and wasn't paying too much attention when the person ringing me up went to get the discs and all, paid and headed out to the car.

Once in the car I did my usual check discs routine, when I noticed something odd... The GTA3 game... was not the one I originally picked up.

I know this, because I made sure to get the best, newest looking GTA3 case/manual/poster that I could find, and the one I now had was disgusting (to me) and nothing at all what I would of agreed to go ahead and get.

Plus, I noticed, that the price tag on this GTA3 sported a price of "$6.99".

...
Check my receipt, and yup, I got charged $6.99 for GTA3, even though the case I picked up (and all others in the displays) stated that it was $4.99.

Not cool.

Of course, when I went back into the store to question this, all the employees would tell me is this: Oh, well, the game was $4.99 at one point, but that was the old price and the new price is $6.99; we just haven't gone through and changed the prices of the games on display yet.

...
...
...
The whole switching the cases on me and charging me more than what I thought something was? Not right at all, and made worse to the fact that they NEVER BOTHERED TELLING ME.

I don't know about what everyone else thinks, and I hate to sound like some entitled ***** here, but it was NOT right of them to pull that crap. What they SHOULD of done is, at least, TELL me about the price change and ASK me if I still wanted to purchase the item.

Even better, they should of honoured the pricing it stated on the display - It isn't the customer's fault if THEY didn't update matters.

Blah, blah, blah.
I wish I wasn't so... weak, when it comes to confrontations and stuff.

Uh, all ranting and rambling aside, I guess the main point/question of this is:

Has anyone else had bad experiences with Gamestop or buying games in general?

you think that they would understand wanting the newer looking product they work at a game store... i feel the same way, you feel as if it's your game and not anyone else's... not to mention in a collection a banged up game isn't going to look nice at all. It's your decision if you want it new or used THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE BOTH... a concept that gamestop has yet to comprehend.

that is when i beat the employees with a [expletive deleted] bat

it doesn't [expletive deleted] matter if i want my game wrapped in bat[expletive deleted], if i want that, and they don't have that, i'll take my money to best[expletive deleted]buy who at least don't open the games for me.

as for mischarges, either they return every red cent, or they take back the game. Grief? Let me see your manager. Grief?

firebomb their [expletive deleted] store.

criminals deserve no quarter

edit: expletives deleted. i got a little carried away with the [expletive deleted][expletive deleted] on the [expletive deleted]

Meh, I've got some looks when I want to see/compare discs, but generally the employees here are pretty nice. The one I went to last time, the guy who was working was really nice. He pulled out three discs they had for the game I wanted and let me mull them over and told me he did the same thing when he bought used games. And he talked to me about what games I was getting/would like. D: I'm going bavk to that one from now on...

You should watch Zero Originality. It's a series made in the style of Zero Punctuation, except instead of reviewing games, the guy just bashes Gamestop.

scenario 1. You want it that way, you're paying the premium to have it that way, that's how it should be. Make that clear or go somewhere else.
scenario 2. They entered a contract with you by offering it for 5 bucks. Doesn't matter if they got the number wrong, they can only sell it to you for less than the price marked on it. This is a legal thing.

I love how newer games that are sold as used 3 days after release are like 4 dollars cheaper then a brand new outta the box copy lol. Like seriously...4 bucks. Thats barely enough for a starbucks. Which i find odd for some reason that wherever there's a gamestop there's a starbucks. next door. At least on Long Island anyway.

There is nothing wrong or "OCD" about wanting your $60 game to come factory sealed. What is wrong is the fact that you spent more than 5 seconds arguing this with one of the employees. If you can't handle a little confrontation with a Gamestop employee, I can't help but wonder how you will handle life. No offense intended. You either need to man up and tell the ***** that the reason you want it factory sealed doesn't fucking matter and slap him/her across the face with your 12 digit pin credit card, or lighten up and not worry about the condition your games are in. I'd go with the first one.

many years ago, i was looking at some sega genesis games right after someone else who had completely messed everything up, it never seemed to be in any order any other time but i guess it was supposed to be now, and i got blamed for it, normally i wouldn't care, but the dude made a huge scene out of it, and then i, feeling like a major ass, left and hadn't gone back there unless that guy wasn't working

Apathetic employees.
Great Prices!

Shop at Play 'n Trade.

Seriously. I was a loyal Gamestop customer, but when I went to Play 'n Trade, they went to insane lengths to keep my business, and they did.

Notably, I asked if they had a copy of Parasite Eve II, knowing full well that they wouldn't - nobody does. The one clerk said "Hey, hold on, I know a guy in another store across the province, give me a couple days".

The next day, the dude called me. He called his friend/co-worker, talked him into trading it in at his local Play 'n Trade (yes, this other guy actually owned this copy), then they express mailed it to my local PNT at no extra charge, just so I could pay eleven dollars for one of the rarer PS2 games out there.

I also want you to keep in mind that this guy and I had never met before, this clerk was just amazing. I've asked friends in other cities and they have had similar experiences.

Those idiots fail to understand that YOU (caps for a reason) are the customer, and there's a nagging little quote that goes with being a customer and all.

I had a similar situation: I bought "used" Tony Hawks Proving grounds for the 360, and when i brought it home to play it....the disk was soo horribly mangled the Xbox wouldn't even read it in the dashboard.

Took the faulty game back, and they told me they didn't have any other copies besides the one they keep to prove that they have the game in stock.

Had a long response typed out and lost it.

To sum it up:

No longer go to in-mall Gamestop.
Go all the time to the one across the mall, because the employees there are beyond awesome.
Starbucks all over the place here, and most near/next to a Gamestop (Maybe the two are in league with one another to take over the world through video games and coffee. :p)
Zero Originality? Never heard of it, but will need to check it out. Thanks for telling me 'bout it!

I know I need to become more assertive; it's an issue I've always had a problem with both in real life and online... except, amusingly enough, when it comes to sticking up for another person/someone I care about. :/'

I'm attempting to get better at it, but at the same time it's not as easy as on switch, off switch.

Either way, no offence taken. :)

Hm, I somehow doubt that's an option around here - only game stores I've heard of are Gamestop, Gamecrazy and Game Quest.

I certainly need to do some research and find out whether or not one exists, however! Sounds like a wonderful place to shop at.

I work at a blockbuster and we also sell used games... i completely understand the customer's concerns when checking a disc and i usually check it myself and if it's not up to snuff I'll ask them if they want it resurfaced by our machine free of charge. Another example is this man was going to buy Oblivion because he loved Fallout 3 so much but he was still new to the gaming scene.. we had a copy used for $29.99 and a copy of the game of the year edition (brand new) for $24.99. It didn't make much sense to us as to why we had them priced in such a way but we lead the guy in the right direction because we actually care about meeting (and exceeding) the customer's expectations, and the customer's product.

Gamestop seems to breed like rabbits around me. In the same mall there are two. Just at opposite ends of the store. I once went back and forth between the two seeing if I could get a better price at one instead of the other. Turned out the prices were the same (I should have known!). But it still was good exercise to walk from one end of a mall to another.

I've yet to have bad experiences with Gamestop but I'm sure its bound to happen soon.

I have the same desire to have all new games in their original condition and unopened. If the microsoft seal on the side of 360 games is broken I refuse to buy it (this is a seal MS put on the side of cases to show if it has been opened or not, it very easily tears so it's not the sort of thing they could bypass easily).

Gamestation in the UK has a large tendancy to take out all the discs of new games and put them in these plastic sleaves with the manual. However these sleaves are re-used and gather dirt over time, which will eventually scratch the disc. This is the reason I buy my games at GAME, even though they are more expensive than gamestation (but they are still reasonable) they never take the wrap off, they just use display cases.

Can someone also confirm wheather if the seal is broken, the seller cannot confirm it's new therefore they cannot sell it as brand new?

EDIT: the main reason I want it new is so that I know it should work without any problems

Makes me want to return the brand new copy of Oblivion (GoTY) * that I bought at GameStop for a refund and go buy it at Blockbuster. XD

* Yes, the game in question in original post.
