Gaming industries newest money making scheme, early access aka pay us more money to get the game early

So I have noticed this recent trend for games to have some kind of premium edition that gives players 6-2 days ""early access"" to a game. I know this isn't a new thing since gamesin the past let you pre-order to get beta access. This used to be a multiplayer only phenomenon but now it's seeped into single player games, Diablo 4, (I know that it's always online but still) Starfield and now Ghost runner 2. (There is probably more)

So it looks like this could become a new industry standard for single player games, which I can't say I'm a big fan of. Seems like this is going to be some easy FOMO bucks for companies since I know a ton of people will easily pay an extra 10$ (or more) to play a single player game "early". I already avoid spoilers like the plague but I'm sure this will definitely make avoiding them harder since I won't be paying for it.

I'm sure if this catches on it has the extra effect of pushing games towards digital further reducing those lost sales from used games.

Considering we have games that aren't even finished being released in "early access" to be purchased months if not years before they're finished, if they ever are, I'm pretty sure that ship has long since sailed. It's technically different from what you're talking about but not by much.

Who cares about FOMO? Can you not wait to play a game? Where are you getting spoilers for games from? The only place I've ever gotten spoiled by something was the IMDB forums where they had the most popular or recently posted threads on the main movie page and you'd see threads like "how do ya'll feel about Sarah getting killed off?" as the thread title.

So, someone else than Bethesda, EA and Activision-Blizzard are doing it now? Because that scheme has been a subscheme from pre-order bonuses for some years now. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if that pre-order access starts before giving access to reviewers or before lifting the review embargo.

That's just what the MAN wants you to think DUDE! Sandpaper is wet, we've just been fed lies all our lives!
In another dimension, sandpaper could indeed be described as wet, depending on how the aliens designed their language. Hell, this kinda thing could even happen right here on Earth.
