Gawker's definition of what it was changed when it felt it was appropriate. During Gamergate it wasn't journalism and therefore a group of bloggers shouldn't be held to the same standards of actual journalism. It was journalism and journalistic integrity that led to them posting that sex tape and then ignoring a court order because it was a journalist's job to find the truth or some such crap.

Long story short, Gawker was whatever it needed to be to generate cash and clicks.

I kind of hope that Hulk Hogan disappears from the limelight forever now, so he can end his career knowing that his final move was to suplex a truly villainous company out of existence.

Sadly, I couldn't find an image of Hogan suplexing anyone, so this'll have to do.

Anyway, bye Gawker.

And literally nothing of value was lost. Fuck everything about that repulsive nasty little webshite and fuck all the repulsive nasty little bullies who wrote for it.

The only way this could get better is if that vile toad Denton found his personal finances in the same place as his morals i.e bankrupt.

Ritz with the cheese in the middle? Those were the shits. I say were because they changed the ingredients since I was a kid. Do love me some Combos though.

Gawker's troubles started when it pissed off infamous wrestler Hulk Hogan,

"Pissed off"?

Oh they did alot more then just "piss off" hulk hogan.

They posted a sex video of him online wich they had no right to do, refused to follow a court order to take it down, and mocked both hogan and the US justice system openly in response.

Not to mention after hogan was taking him to trial suddenly certain selected "quotes" about midly racist statements of hogan concerning his daughter dating a black guy (i think this was it?) where leaked to the public, ruining his legacy forever with any mention of him being purged from the wrestling hall of fame even thought he was one if not THE one most influential wrestler of all time, not only destroying his reputation but also actively hurting his income. All strangely enough after it became known that he would take gawker to court.. what a strange coincidence indeed.

Furthermore during the trial Gawkers disgusting business practices where laid open, for example when a rape victim asked them to take down a video of her rape that they had posted on their website they refused in a flippant and disgusting manner. Showing that gawker didnt give a flying fuck about victims of crimes aslong as they got their clicks (wich is in stark contrast to the goody two shoes social justice advocate image they like to give themselves)

During the trial they also stated that their limit for sex videos would be "involving a 4 year old child"

Needless to say, stating, even in jest, that you would be willing to host basically child porn on your website aslong as the kid was older then 4 years REALLY is not a good idea infront of a judge in a trial.

So now, gawker has really only itselfe to blame for its downfall, and to be honest it was about damn time someone took them down. They have destroyed lives in the past with their sensationalism, forced outings, reckless clickbaiting, baseless rape accusations and simply not giving a shit about victims, and they would have kept doing this.. wich is the most important part and the reason why i say good riddance.

To bad that the new owners arent much better then the old.

While Gawker more than rightfully got what it deserved, let's not forget that Hulk Hogan still was fired from the WWE for spewing racist diatribe, and that his financial supporter Peter Thiel is a bigot neocon with anti-democratic tendencies.

This is a story without heroes.

btw this is the "racist diatribe":

"I don?t know if Brooke was fucking the black guy?s son. I mean, I don?t have double standards. I mean, I am racist, to a point. Fucking niggers. But then when it comes to nice people and shit, and whatever?I mean, if she was going to fuck some ******, I?d rather have her marry an 8-foot-tall ****** worth a hundred million dollars! Like a basketball player! I guess we?re all a little racist. Fucking ******."

For that he was: Fired, was deleted from wrestlings hall of fame, will most likely never again be able to sign a contract that requires any amount of publicity from his part (i say never again because hes not the youngest guy anymore.. hes actually pretty old) and will ever be known as a racist...

So what he did was:

He used the "n" word in a fit of rage about his daughters poor live choices

He said something in private that was recorded without his knowledge or his agreement

He felt secure in this private setting to speak his mind, something he would have never done publically or in his role as hulk hogan.

He was very angry and used the most offensive language he could think of to voice his anger, you know, like everyone else would have done?

This statement btw was recorded years before it was made public, and in the meantime there was not a single other case of his "blatant racism" to be found, not after or before for that matter. Not to mention he apologized and explained himselfe.. and it should have ended at that.

But good ol US of A cant have that... white dude used the "n" word! Lets ruin his live over it! He deserves it the bastard!

Oh and Thiel only financed hulk hogan, he gave hogan money so he could sue gawker wich was his right to do and as it turned out the Court also gave hogan right. You make it sound as if Thiels personal political leanings have anything to do with the fact that gawker broke the law here. But it doesnt. Theres nothing moraly aprehensive over the fact that hogan took thiels money to take Gawker to court.

The real moral aprehensive thing is that even someone like hulk hogan needs the financial backing of a friggin billionaire to get justice done in the USA.

Think about that before you frown at where hogan got his money from.

So yeah... TL:DR

Hogan used the "n" word in private in a fit of rage... got deleted from wrestling history and all sources of income cut off....

Just in time for his lawsuit against gawker... funny how things like that work out eh?

And yet other people use their corporate affiliated social media accounts proudly proclaiming to the public at large that they would like to murder white people, or defend pedophiles, pedophilia and child porn... and people actually come to their defense or selectively ignore what they say.... amazing times we live in.

Just two things regarding this (I don't really go into this in-depth, since it has little to do with the actual topic of this thread: the fortunate demise of Gawker.com):

1. Have you ever actually listened to this rant? I won't link to it, but you can find it with minimal Google-Fu. He didn't say that "in a fit of rage". He wasn't screaming. He wasn't shouting. He wasn't raising his voice. He wasn't "very angry". He delivers these lines in a completely calm and casual tone.

2. The reason why this happened to become public just in time for his lawsuit against Gawker? What do you think where these lines come from? A little hint: he happened to utter them after a certain act depicted in a certain unjustifiably acquired video published by a certain pseudo-journalist website.

People can be very angry while still being very calm, or are you going to tell me he wasnt angry at that point about the in his eyes poor live choices of his daughter?

I can tell you thought he wasnt exactly cheering and eating birthday cake during it. Yes raging might have been the wrong word, what about angry, disapointed, despaired that he cant reach his daughter wich he clearly thought was throwing her live away with a (aparantly) pennyless black guy with less then reputable background?

That he said it calmly afterall doesnt change the private nature of the situation and that the recording was made without his consent or knowledge just like the rest of the video right after sleeping with his best friends wife wich he didnt really want to begin with (really this whole situation he was in at that moment was just all sorts of batshit insane, aparantly his best "friend" talked him into having sex with his wife to help him over depression, but in truth secretly recorded the whole thing... what a "friend" indeed)

He was recorded at a very low point in his life, that people say some very bad stuff in private in such a situation isnt really unheard of unnormal nor representative of how they are in everyday live, nor should they be held accountable for something they said in private that has no consquences outside of the conversation for anyone.

as for your number 2)

I am fully aware of this -.- the " strange coincidence" that i refered to was meant sarcastically since it was never proven that it was indeed gawker who leaked the statement. But considering that they where one of the few that had the full video and a reason to "leak" these statements makes it blatantly obvious who leaked the rest of the vid that included hogans use of the "n" word and claiming that hes "racist to a point/a little bit racist". Clearly a monster that should be publically shunned and have his career ruined with no chance of redemption for such an outrageous crime.

Oh noooos...where will all the bottom feeders go to get their mind-numbing gossip rags now?? It's not like the most commonly spouted "news" to be found wiped on the sides of everywhere!!!

It would be cool if they turned the site into a satire of itself, like that quite often funny show "Star Stories." There is much fun to be poked out of the social mindset that this type of news appeals to.

Oh well...guess I'd better add to the pile;

Even so, his demeanor makes clear he was in full control of what he said and how he said it. This wasn't an uncontrolled slip of the tongue.

Yes... fully in control... while being depressed... talked into having sex with his best friends wife.. by said best friend.. because that helps with depressions according to said friend and wouldnt make everything worse (maybe his wife has some sort of miracle vagina who knows)... while his daughter was doing something of what he believed to be throwing her live away.

A completly normal and rational situation in wich people behave completly normal and rational and say completly normal and rational things.

Damn context... allways getting in the way of black/white simple scenarios eh?

And lets not forget that he said those things because he thought he was with someone he could trust and that he firmly believed that these words would never leave that room, and prolly forgot about them the next morning.

Yet.. he used the "n" word... How dare he! Its not like he otherwise never showed any racism, in word or action. Its not like he publically apologized and admitted that the things he said where wrong and dont reflect his true believes after it was made public... nah.. hes a racist and thus a bad bad person.

See heres the problem i have with all this:

You are judging him for this as a clear sign of him being a racist... to wich i ask: Is anyone here who never ever has said something "-istic" in private, around friends? Perhaps out of anger or as a joke?

And now imagine it was you who would be fired and have all your lives accomplishments (given you have achieved something of actual notice like hogan did for wrestling) either deleted from official record or called into question.. because of the one thing you said... around friends... in private... that someone secretly recorded and then made public...

Maybe you said something about mexicans stealing all the jobs without actually meaning it... maybe about jews controlling all the banks.. maybe you made a sexist joke.. but now your entire live is being called into question and you made unemployable because of that one single time you said something highly politcal incorrect in private amongst friends.

Suddenly its not all black and white anymore is it?

Certainly wouldn't be if Hulk Hogan had his way. Gettit?

As for Hogan himself, everyone else removed for the HoF and stripped from wrestling history were actual murderers. Fuck Hulk Hogan, dude's an asshole. Not just for this but because towards the late 90's and onwards he was absolutely fucking toxic to the industry. But he still earned his place.
I'm usually the first to decry Hogan for his politicking, but even I'm grateful to him for ending Gawker.

Sorry, Kevin Sullivan, you're going to have to come up with a new plan to destroy Hulkamania. The Dungeon of Gawker has well and truly fallen under the power of the rare white Bengal tiger.

Let's assume for a moment that you're right. He said what he meant, and he meant what he said. Now, to be perfectly blunt, so what? Put aside for the moment that it's taken from an illegal recording he wasn't aware of. Put aside his mental issues at the time. Put aside the fact that it was eight years earlier than when it was released, and the fact that the response from internet society obliterated any chance of an apology being taken seriously- it's not like entertainment figures ever have any redemptive moments, is it? Put all that aside and focus on one thing:

I'll issue you the same challenge I issued to dispirited fans of Hogan when the story first broke: find me an example of him demonstrating this attitude- show me where he acted on it. Not words; actions. Show me where he discriminated against a black person, or treated them differently than he would a white one. Give me real evidence that he let these thoughts determine how he treated other people. I'll tell you now you won't find any; there's a reason this revelation of these words was as shocking as it was. And words is all they were. Words don't hurt people, actions do. Ultimately, bigotry is a belief. Judaism is also a belief. If it's wrong to punish a person for one, it's wrong to punish a person for the other. The second part of the challenge is explaining how you're accusing Hogan of anything other than Thought Crime.

So Hulk Hogan, presumably remembering what he'd said and knowing the damage it would do to his reputation if it got out, didn't back down from taking Gawker to court and preventing anyone else from being victimized the way he ways. If that doesn't qualify as heroism, then what possibly could?

Regarding Gawker: I never visited the site, but from the sound of things, good freaking riddance. It's nice to see yellow journalists actually having to deal with the consequences of what they say and do.

Regarding Hulk Hogan: Obviously, I don't think his rant was appropriate at all. But people say all kinds of crap all the time when they're not in front of a microphone that they wouldn't want to see repeated. (God knows I've said some dumb shit that I didn't really mean while I was getting drunk with my mates.) It's unfair to condemn him for what he said when the same thing could easily be done to anyone else. To the extent that his rant was morally wrong, he was soundly punished for it through the resulting damage to his career. And the whole thing is mostly irrelevant to the actual substance of the Gawker lawsuit. Racists are entitled to the protection of the law just as much as anyone else.

Regarding Peter Thiel: The man's political views are completely irrelevant. He was forcibly outed by Gawker in a very callous and public way. If he chose to fund legal action against Gawker as a consequence, that's within his rights as a private citizen.

To the extent that either participant in the lawsuit has expressed unsavoury opinions, those opinions are mostly irrelevant to the fact that Gawker violated their privacy in a very tangible way. They certainly don't justify anything Gawker did.

tl;dr - I don't care if you're a racist or a neo-con; I'm not going to shit in your shoes and tell you that you deserve it. Gawker shat in too many shoes and now they're dealing with the fallout. That's good. It's how the world is supposed to work.
