Gears of War 4 Will Have Microtransactions

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1312/1312408.jpgGears of War developer The Coalition has confirmed that the upcoming shooter will have microtransactions.

The newest installment of the Gears of War series will have cosmetic items available as microtransactions. In an interview with Gamespot [http://www.gamespot.com/articles/gears-of-war-4-to-include-microtransactions/1100-6438819/], The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson mentioned the inclusion of these items, and stressed that none of items would have any gameplay effect.

They'll be sold as crates that contain cards of varying rarity. Fergusson compared the system to collectible card games, saying, "I like the idea of why you buy Magic: The Gathering booster pack. If I could just buy the one card I want then I'm out, then you lose it, right?" Fergusson also stated that these packs could be earned through gameplay as well.

If you're looking forward to playing Gears of War 4, you can get your first taste of the gameplay in the multiplayer beta, which starts on Monday, April 18. The game is set to launch on Xbox One in October.

Great just what we need, more BS monetization...I am so sick of these "crate" systems being added solely for the purpose of micro-transactions and then turning around and saying "Oh but it's all cosmetic guys" newsflash, cosmetic skins being sold are still not ok, they aren't as bad as gameplay affecting stuff, but they still affect the game by creating a haves and have not's economy, if you are going to sell cosmetic skins, fine, but I expect a good chunk of future DLC to be released for free, you know, actually have something good come out of it? Triple-dipping with pre-order DLC, Paid DLC later, and micro-transactions is absolutely ridiculous, the moment that people become ok with this sort of thing, I guarantee you devs will start trying to push gameplay-affecting micro-transactions and put the usual BS spin of "Oh their optional"

Oh ho...you do not get to be a flagship console exlusive IP without some bumblecunt demanding microtransactions be your broadsides. Don't you see? They're only doing it for the fans. It's only cosmetic. You can still allegedly unlock them with hard earned luck! It doesn't ruin the experience guis...just leave it alone in the corner with its' shady grin, eyeing up the kids dinner money, it's not harming anyone that doesn't deserve it guis! Only good, wholesome pro-consumer intentions to be found here.

I think Fergusson fails to realize that Gears of War 4 is not Magic: The Gathering. Not like I'll be buying the game anyway since I am not a fan of the series, but it should be fine as long as they aren't turning a blind eye to core game problems in order to make this system.

They say no news is good news, but really, its just because "no duh" means something much darker. I hate that I'm not surprised by this at all.

Of course he loves the feeling of someone ripping open a pack of magic the gathering cards.
He's the one selling the cards.
Better yet, he doesn't have to print anything.
That's a win win!

Yeah.
Definitely not a soft rollout of a microtransaction system designed to adjust player perceptions of their presence in games and make them more welcoming of real money transactions as an integral part of the game.

Having seen how this kind of thing works in Blacks Ops 3, I guess I don't really have any qualms against this sort of thing. Still a step up from the "crate and key" thing, if you ask me.

Oh, so GoW 4 will be a f2p game?

Oh wait, no. It's just another example of gaming industry being disgustingly greedy.

x will have microtransactions is becoming my most hated phrase in gaming. Can't I just pay up front for a game and be done with it? I hate the mental fuckery that goes on in order to encourage "micro" spending.

I haven't played Black Ops 3, other than a bit of the campaign. How do the microtransactions work in that game? Is it similar to Mass Effect 3, where you can earn the money for crates through matches as well as buying them?

ETA: It's kind of a shame this is becoming more and more common, but as long as they have an option to earn the currency without paying, it's not quite a dealbreaker for me. Not great, and definitely not preferred, but only one strike against the game, rather than a gutter ball, if you get my drift.

This isn't the 1990's son, where you bought a full game and that was that. This is the Micro-llennium, where you will continue to pay until the developer says otherwise.

What I really hate about these packs is that they take away achievements from the player in favor of a slot machine. When I wanted a badass mount in say Wow(in previous expansions before the cash store) I had to work my ass off for it. If I wanted Invincible's Reins not only would I have to get really really lucky but I would have to beat an endgame raid. But once I had those EVERYBODY would know I am one badass guy. That doesn't exist in a world where you just pay for them upfront.

In a world where you just pay for them upfront its like:
"oh hey yeah you got Invincible's Reins too?"
"yeah I bought them last week cause I thought they looked cool.
As you stand in a crowd of people who also bought Invincible's Reins who don't give a damn because nobody actually earned anything the hard way.

Can we not?

Please?

Its not good in Halo 5. Its not good in Black Ops 3. Its not good in Destiny.

It won't be good in Gears 4.

Pretty much. You earn the "cryptokeys" through normal games and by completing challenges. You can spend 10 or 30 of them for a supply drop containing cosmetic junk, like weapon camo, taunts, outfits, some stuff that outright reskins weapons. Naturally, there is a rarity mechanic involved. I don't know the denominations or prices, but I assume you can buy the keys in bulk.

My father plays the game casually and somewhat infrequently, yet he has hundreds of the keys saved up since he doesn't really bother with that stuff. Perhaps not the best example to gauge the system by, but still.

Meh. This only serves to reinforce my cynicism towards the AAA industry. Not that I was not immensely cynical towards it already, just that I always feel that there is a small amount of optimism left to be squeezed out of me and crushed.

Well even the 90's had expansion packs. Though to compare Expansion Packs to Microtransactions, and even a fair amount of DLC does the games of yore a MASSIVE disservice.

So, cosmetic microtransactions exist and...I'm supposed to be outraged?

So they're following precisely the format used by the Halo 5 REQ packs? You could've just said that, Rod. Don't be ashamed to say you're nicking a shit bad idea from a shit poor game - own your decisions!

EDITed for fairness.

So it's like the "Black Ops III" system - except this time the micro-transactions are there out of the gate. It's more honest, at least, but unnecessary.
