He's... an arrogant bastard. Bring back the old picture, he just made a douche out of himself again. As a matter of fact, what the hell is he doing in this picture? Examining his teeth?

Not that I don't support the EFF but the people donate money to support this one specif piece of legal action donating the money to the EFF while nice might not be what everyone wanted to do with their money. What's with that advice though... I encourage you all to troll Sony harder in order to annoy them into submitting... the fuck?

Hmm, I thought he said we would be pleasantly surprised with what he was going to do with the money? Doing what any decent person would do isn't surprising...pleasant yes but not surprising.
Actually, the really decent thing to do would be to donate to a really worthwhile charity, like cancer research, or some 3rd world water charity. Then again, the internet would have screamed in protest because the money wasn't going towards their cause, so it was the best he could do.
In short: No it would not.
In long: The people gave him the money with the expectation he would stand up for digital rights. As he did not take a stand the right thing to do is to give the money to those who will; for some people that is a worthwhile charity. To give the money to any other charity would be a form of theft, charities do not in general like being given money gained dishonestly.

I wonder how many of the funds that weren't leftover were given to Sony in the out of court settlement? I doubt very much that nothing was handed over. I'm sure the people who donated to the cause must be feeling pretty ripped off right about now, although they should have seen something like this happening when they opened their wallets for this idiot.

I'm loving how the same posters who three weeks were willing to argue all day that there was no way that Hotz could lose against Sony, and that Sony couldn't prove shit, and his defense against Sony was gonna eventually result in a court ruling that made it legal to do with your PS3 whatever you want 'cause you bought it, are the same posters who are now saying that Hotz did the right thing to settle 'cause he wasn't gonna win against Sony and all their money so that's kinda-sorta-in-a-way a victory for Hotz. Whatever.

You guys are suprisingly receptive, when I saw the title I immediately thought "shitstorm coming in 3... 2..."

I hate it when I'm wrong.

He is taking quite a mouthful there for someone who just got of the hook from being sued back into the stone age.

Can you imagine Sony doing that?

Difficult difficult case...BUT...that's a hell of a PR move for GeoHot at the end of it.
In the end, he only did what he initially claimed he would....After dicking around for a while.

That's good PR?
So choosing a charity to donate to is dicking around? Wow and here i thought he was doing right by his promise and PICKING A GOD DAMNED CHARITY! Did you expect him to dump it all into child's play? oh no that kind of behavior to the man means you expected him to get a boat.

He gave the funds to a charity in support of the cause the people donated for. He did right by them and if you don't like to believe that tough shit.
What "choice" did he have in the matter? He said when he was begging for money that whatever money was leftover would be donated to the EFF. He ain't had no choice but to donate it to the EFF. Unless the other choice was to haul ass back down to Brazil with it and never come back. And, while you can live pretty cheaply in Brazil, you ain't living long on $10,000.

Has anything ever stop him before from arrogantly running his mouth?

True.
But I was hoping being gripped by the throat by a multi-national-company might end his trash talking. They should have made that part of the settlement. And have him wear a chicken hat.

A noteworthy charity... like the EFF? Okay, I suppose you can argue that it's *just* a nonprofit or something, but... seriously, especially given why the money was donated in the first place, that *is* a noteworthy charity.

Plus, if anyone around here ever did some homework before running their mouths, they'd know that the EFF has been supportive of Hotz going back to his iPhone jailbreak days. In fact, an attorney from the EFF filed a letter brief with the Court in an attempt to block Sony from being granted the subpoenas for Google, PayPal, BlueHost, and others. It's not even so much a "donation" as it is a case of "one hand washing the other."

Sony had every right to come down on him. There were some questionable ways in which they tackled the situation, but that doesn't suddenly make them the bad guys.

Oh, and that picture of him is more punchable then the one of Kotick that always gets wheeled out.

Why are you so obsessed with him?

Every thread I've seen about him in the past few weeks has been 10% people discussing the OP and 90% you arguing with someone because Geohotz pissed you off.

More OT:

I'd like to see what anyone else would have done in his situation.

It's all fine and dandy saying you wouldn't back down to Sony. But actually following through with your boasts, something else entirely.

Believe it or not. It doesn't matter if you're in the right or not. The law doesn't really care. All that matters is how good your lawyer(s) is(are). And Sony has enough money to bait out the best of them.

He's come out of this surprisingly well.

All he's had to do is agree to not post the route key back up. You know, that one he posted before all this began and that is now floating around out there for anyone to find. And he'd be fined for any future hacking of Sony products.

I'd call that a victory really. Especially considering there are thousands more gadgets out there to be broken.

Microsoft offered him a free phone if he promised to hack it. This has had pretty much no impact on him in the long run.

And he needed to give his remaining funds to the EFF or he could be done for fraud. So this wasn't really a surprise.
For the same reason that dogs like to lick their own balls: because they can.

Except a dog licking it's own balls has a purpose.

This doesn't.

It's also kind of sad.
How about you let the dog that licking the balls be the judge of whether or not his balls-licking serves a purpose?

I've only been paying attention with mild interest of this whole case, but the pictures used of this guy just make me hate him. He comes across as a complete ass.
