As far as I know Madworld is still not allowed for sale in Germany, but at least one step in the right direction.

According to Germans I know Bavaria is like the West Virginia of Germany, full of their equivalent of rednecks.
Yes, this is actually true.
Good news, I'm relieved that video games are still allowed here.

Well, this is good news. It was a genuine worry for a while, but thankfully, all seems to be resolved, at least for now.

Only Australia left now, as goes democratic nations censoring videogames.
They're good news, but it doesn't change much. Violent video games are still maimed and "indexed" here, so rather hooray for continued censorship. But at least that problem is now off the table.

So many politicians that make wonderful targets for a purge...

OT: I'm glad about that, but still, it doesn't keep the Government from indirectly forcing the developers/publishers to censor the games/not releasing them here.

WOOOOOOOO FUCKING YEAH!
It is funny that I hear of that from here first. The Media is always quick to rise up and tell the people that games are bad, and quote countless politians (they must know, if not them, who else knows whats best for "the people") how bad they are (see above quote from bavarian minister).
But they are eagerly avoiding to say something nice about games.
Same with the "Airsoft guns" that where found in his room.
A qoute from a local newspaper said (my translation) "Where others have Posters of Bands or Sportstars, he hangs Guns in their place. Which parent could walk into that room and not think there is something wrong with her child?"
Yeah, only that the Child was 19 and that posters of Naked Chicks would also have been present "normaly"...
Does this make them a rapist now?
I think not.
Also that his Dad owned several guns legally and also took him to shooting doesn´t in any way affect his attitude towards guns...no, not at all.

I´m 20, I´m in the Military and 2 Assaultrifles and 2 Submachineguns hang on my wall. A Handgun laying on the table next to my bed. All airsoft, mind you. Pieces of Military gear scattered around the room.
Yet the only thing my mom is concerned about is if and what kind of job I can get after my time with the forces end...
Well, in the eyes of politians, I´m a walking time bomb and my mom is deranged and doesn´t notice my clearly voilent nature that heats up inside me.
Maybe I´ll storm the Reichstag Call of Duty style, screaming russian profanitys and propaganda as i impale german ministers and counsellors upon my soviet era flag and raise it on the rooftop.
Then I´ll all blame it that they wanted to ban my beloved "my little pony" games...

Nothing really to do with "cooler heads". The European Union Treaty doesn't allow tariffs or "measures equating a quantitative restriction" on goods coming into a country. There are some exceptions, which include the moral health of a nation's citizens, but the restriction has to be proportionate. Outright banning of violent videogames would not be proportionate, but increasing awareness of age ratings and positively reinforcing age ratings would be.

Basically, if they'd have implemented an outright ban, they'd have been lining themselves up to be sued by pretty much every developer and publisher of violent videogames who currently imports into Germany. Suffice to say, I doubt Germany wanted that.

So yea, nothing to do with the politics, all to do with the law.

Damn, I love the European Union sometimes :p

Not really, actually. Shit like this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94909-Wolfenstein-Recalled-in-Germany-UPDATED] still happens.

Germany won't be banning violent games outright, but censorship will still feature prominently.
Well, that was probably less due to the violence and more because Germany is really sensitive about the whole "Nazi germany" thing.

OT: I will bet anything that all those people pushing for the bans have never actually played a video game, violent or not.

Actually I as a German do not consider this censorship. The use of swastikas is really restricted mainly to prohibit use of this sign in Neo Nazi movements. Practically you are only free to use the swastika in the context of an educational purpose.

It is a little annoying if the Hellsing manga for example is banned because of the use swastikas yet you can find altered versions of Captain America comics because of the swastika. usually they connect the edges to create a thing slightly resembling a window.

These alterations are not nearly as dangerous for games like this discussion since the latest amok attack. Honestly most Germans do not considers this even a mild annoyance.

I'm tired of news reporters always pointing the blame at video games. Next, we're gonna see that prostitution is on the rise because girls love playing Barbie Fashion Show: An Eye for Style on the DS.

this is ultimately the FIRST sane and USEFUL descion the recent Chancellor Merkel-Government made since they were first elected.

Maybe the financial crisis has some good effect, now the government needs money - from the sales taxes of violent videogames.

Fine with me.

Apparently our politicians do have more than five braincells between them all. Who would've guessed? Still, whenever a violent game comes along I'll import it from Austria anyway; that way I can be sure it'll be uncut.
