Not really, actually. Shit like this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94909-Wolfenstein-Recalled-in-Germany-UPDATED] still happens.

Germany won't be banning violent games outright, but censorship will still feature prominently.
Actually I as a German do not consider this censorship. The use of swastikas is really restricted mainly to prohibit use of this sign in Neo Nazi movements. Practically you are only free to use the swastika in the context of an educational purpose.

It is a little annoying if the Hellsing manga for example is banned because of the use swastikas yet you can find altered versions of Captain America comics because of the swastika. usually they connect the edges to create a thing slightly resembling a window.

These alterations are not nearly as dangerous for games like this discussion since the latest amok attack. Honestly most Germans do not considers this even a mild annoyance.
QFT. Its just a fact of life.

Und ich sage: Hurrah!
Aber leider könnten wir Schweizer immer noch ein solches Gesetz kriegen, aber hoffentlich werden wir einfach den Deutschen alles nachmachen.

Us Swiss have something like a ban on violent games pending, better not push through ._. (not what it says before someone who can speak german calls me a douche).

Ich dachte, das Gesetz wär bei Euch schon längst verabschiedet worden?
Hat mich aber gewundert, weil bei Euch war's ja bisher deutlich liberaler geregelt als bei uns.

Oh yeah, I just called him a douche in german, had to be done... ;)

Pffffft. Violent games already are banned in Germany. Or at least, they're not allowed to have human NPCs, even if there's no blood. They have to turn them into aliens or robots, or some stupid shit like that. That's what the Internet tells me, anyway.

You might not, others may very well.

The law says that, if your medium has an artistic purpose that is clearly not pro-Nazi, you are allowed to depict swastikas. Which is why there is no censorship in, say, Indiana Jones. Movies are fine, Comics should also be fine, but most publishers are too scared to not retouch the images.

That's not being done any more today. Most games keep everything, only splatter- and ragdoll-effects are being removed, many times (but happening less and less) blood effects, too.
The last robotized game I remember was Half-Life, and that's excluding the Steam-version.

This is good news.

Hopefully the Supreme Court here in the U.S. will make the same decision later in the year.
What do you mean? We don't have any ban on violent videogames pending do we?

Its a hearing to decide whether or not making the sale of violent games to kids illegal. The law itself is pointless and redundant since the industry itself already has plenty of safeguards in place to stop selling games to kids. Hell most stores will fire an employee if he sells a violent game to a kid, and in this economic climate, thats reason enough to not do it.

The law hasn't been passed because twelve other courts declared it in violation of the First Amendment. If the Supreme Court overturns the other court's decisions, that would mean games should be treated differently from movies/books/music/ect. and not be protected by the first amendment. Which in turn could lead to many states imposing all sorts of restrictions and/or bans on games, and that could possibly lead us into the same state as Australia. Granted thats has a low chance of happening, but the possibility is very real.

EDIT: Here's some more info on the matter [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/the-needles/7576-The-Needles-Master-Chief-Goes-to-Washington].

Hey someone finally did something smart go Germany. Now we just have to show this to England, the US and Australia.
Huh? We don't have any problems like this in the UK. Last game I remember being censored was Manhunt 2.

I think he means that the government will realize its lack of understanding, not games themselves that cause violence and try to educate, not ban and control.

Well, this is good news. It was a genuine worry for a while, but thankfully, all seems to be resolved, at least for now.

We really do need a place where the "artist would not fear the censor"...

That issue is actually not as much related, as what is being contested is whether California, not the US entire, should be able to legally penalize those underage for buying Mature-rated games. There is no banning or censorship being involved here.
But I do agree, good odds the Supreme Court will smack that stupid law down. It shouldn't be left up to the government to do what simple parenting should be doing in the first place. One wonders if that is just a fantasy anymore.
Edit:

Germany has a long way to go before they even try to forgive themselves for what a small number of their own citizens, and one who wasn't one of their own, managed to pull off. But it isn't like gamers can't take a hop across the border to grab a copy. Though maybe not to France, they probably still have a stick up their ass. Among other things. But I digress.
One wonders as far as Australia is concerned, that what Atkinson tried to prevent won't end up drowned in lazy, petty bureaucracy. Dear friends in Oz, I wouldn't expect movement on Mature games until next year the earliest. Look at it this way, by the time it does get passed and goes into effect, it will be twice to three times as hard to revoke, and therefore not worth the effort to try. Bean counters for one would say don't bother.
