Get a First Look at Cities and America in Two New Civilization VI Videos

Two new Civilization VI trailers show off the changes coming to cities, as well as a first look at the American civilization.

Civilization VI is coming in October, and 2K and Firaxis are showing off a first look at some of what the new game will include in two new trailers.


First up is a video that shows off the changes coming to cities, which Firaxis is calling "Unstacking." Now instead of all your building being clustered into one tile, your city center will occupy one tile, with districts surrounding it. This will offer up the chance for specific bonuses, as well bringing new strategies for how you defend and attack cities.

Next, the Civ 6 team is showing off the American civilization. Lead by Theodore Roosevelt, the Americans will get the P-51 Mustang unique unit, as well as Roosevelt's own unit, the Rough Riders. They will also have access to the Film Studio as their unique building.


Civilization VI is set to launch on PC on October 21, with Mac and Linux versions planned as well.

It looks like the art style is a bit more in line with Civilization Revolution, considering it's a little more colorful than usual. I kind of like it. As for Teddy Roosevelt being America's leader this time around, I like the decision. We've had Washington, Lincoln and FDR as leaders in Civ, good to see another face from Mount Rushmore make the grade.

That said, I have a request. Can we get at least ONE city in North Carolina as a city name this time? Out of the 60 city names America gets in Civ 5, none of them are from North Carolina.

I recall, back in my school days, reading about a time when Roosevelt received a letter from a cavalryman complaining that they had to ride fifty miles a day. Roosevelt's response was to hop on a horse and ride it for one hundred miles that day, thereby delivering a rather eloquent "Oh, shut up". Assuming that story is true, it was indeed a Rough Ride on his posterior, but I hardly think it appropriate to refer to him as "ass Roosevelt".

So yes the districts system is based on Endless Legend. This is good.

Whats better, however, is specialised districts and adjacency bonuses. Something largely but not completely absent in EL.

You could just rename your city to whatever you wanted you know...

Yeah, its nice seeing them take some page out of endless legend but going the obvious next step of making district different rather than all the same, a step I don't get why EL didn't take.

My only worry is that by essentially removing worker we "lose" out on one of the slightly interesting choice that would pop up every turn or so, I see myself having a lot more turn where I literally do nothing in time of peace.

If anything we're getting more choices per turn, not less, because we'll have to wait less. The new builders build shit directly, no more deploying your workers and waiting 30 turns for them to finish so you can make another choice.

Oh, the Americans are being represented by Teddy Roosevelt this time around? Well I guess we know where the next month of Cracked.com columns are coming from...

I think I like the districts feature on first pass. I was a bit concerned that it would look stupid or would just amount to buildings being out on the terrain, but having bonuses based on the surrounding tiles is a neat idea. My one lingering doubt is whether it will actually lead to real city specialisation or just end up with every city having a campus, growth, culture and production district.

Those maps don't look too bad either. I am really digging the national parks.

Well they disappear after a limited number of use, so its gonna be something like "choice, choice, choice, choice, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing" or something.

Except that a smart player will make sure that they'll always have a builder on hand to prevent that, naturally. Plus, tiles can be covered by wonders and those city districts as well so we'll be needing workers less than before. Roads are also automatically generated by traders if you deploy those between cities, which is a freakin' godsend, so you won't need 'em for those either. It all sounds like a big plus to me, considering how workers worked in 5.
