Get Dragon Age: Origins For Free as Part of Origin's "On The House" Program

If you snag Dragon Age: Origins from the Origin store between now and October 14, you'll experience a generous 100% discount.

EA's Plants vs. Zombies [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133314-Free-Dead-Space-Launches-Origins-On-the-House-Program] featured on the program, and now, one of the best Western RPGs of all time is being featured. That's right, from now until October 14, you can pick up Bioware's award-winning Dragon Age: Origins for a rather generous 100% discount.

To get your free game, all you'll need to do is head over to the Origin store [https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/buy/dragon-age-1/pc-download/base-game/standard-edition], and click on the "Get it Now" button. Then, it will be added to your Origin library, where it will stay for free, forever. This offer only extends to the base Dragon Age: Origins game, so if you want the Awakening expansion packs, or any of the smaller DLCs you'll have to shell out some cash.

Still, it's a pretty generous offer, and while some may consider "the catch" to be that you have to download Origin, that's a very small price to pay to get this fantastic game for free.

But act fast, because after October 14 the game will go back to its regular price of $29.99.

Not bad, even just the base game is well worth playing. I wonder if I can get it so its added to Origin and then log in and get all my DLC and expansions from the Bioware site in one place, reinstalling all those expansions and gear items is time consuming and annoying.

That damned screenshot though, f**k that harvester. One of the dullest and most time consuming boss fights ever, this feels a bit sneaky though. Offer the superior first game in the series for free to possibly introduce the series to those that haven't played it yet right before the launch of the next game, Dragon Age Inquisition which is quite an "evolution" away from that game (I use that charitably, even if the game is good its still a very different game to Origins).

If it requires Origin it's still not worth it.
Welcome to 2011 I guess? Origin is a lot better than Steam these days in some respects, they actually have a fair refund policy as opposed to Steams refund policy being your shit out of luck most the time unless there is a huge enough fuss for to make them offer refunds to everyone, its stable, the prices, sales and deals are about the same most of the year, EA are actually curating their content.

The storefront isn't packed to the brim with the third piece of 10yr old broken shit from some unknown shovelware publishers back catalogue of garbage that week, neither does it have scam games where someone with my skill level in developing games sits down and spends a week with an SDK to push out some random broken "survival Zombie game" and try to sell it.

Steam has.... Badges?

Hey, Origin hasn't been awful in years. Its nothing amazing, but it certainly is no worse than steam was a few years ago.

I grabbed it; every Steam sale, I always agonised over whether or not to get this game and held off, but now, finally, EA has made me an offer I can't refuse.

I still probably won't download it in the foreseeable future. The game is way, way too big for that. I just like that I finally have it in some capacity.

This is an AMAZINGLY good move on EA?s part. I?m actually shocked at how smart they are. It?s literally a good deal for both EA and the consumer.

First of all, Dragon Age: Origins is a damn good game; consumers that haven?t played it yet SHOULD download Origin and play it. Consumers will get a really fun game for free, and EA gets consumers to download Origin on their computers.

Second, DA:O has LOADS of DLC (some worth the purchase, some not), so anyone that gets hooked will buy the DLC and EA would make money from digital purchases. A fair deal for both EA and the consumer again.

Third, EA is going to get some people hooked on Dragon Age just in time for Dragon Age: Inquisition?s release. A winner for EA and anyone that gets hooked will also be excited that they found Dragon Age in time for the release as well.

So far, I?m really proud of EA in the later part of this year. They?re giving away the pools in Sims 4 for free, and this incredibly fair deal as well. EA claimed that they didn?t want to be called the worst company again, and I?m shocked to say that they?re starting down the right path! I mean, I *hate* EA, but I must give them credit for what they?re doing; it?s not only fair, but also beneficial to the consumer *and* their company. It?s not putting ?player first? (as quoted by Yahtzee), but it?s a win-win deal, and if EA keeps doing that then I?ll start standing behind them more often.

Am I sure glad I didn't pick it up in a Steam sale.

With this and the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection not too long ago, I can't say I'm regretting having Origin on my computer.

Can anyone say what the downsides to downloading Origin are nowadays? Last I remember, it was basically intrusive spyware, and I wouldn't be tempted to download that just in order to get digital access to a game I already own and likely will never play again. But if they've improved the client significantly, maybe it would be worth it. I just want to know what I'd be getting into.

The only downside I've experienced with it is that the download rates seem much slower than Steam's, which is definitely an issue. If you are willing to wait a bit, though, I see no real reason to avoid Origin anymore. Especially for free games. At any given time, at least one game is available for free from On The House (currently, it's DA:O and Bejeweled 3), and there are also Game Time games, that allow you 48 hours of unlimited access to newer games (right now, that would be Titanfall). Pretty good value, even without factoring in the sales (which, admittedly, are not as common as on Steam, but there are several sales going right now).

Overall, as long as you don't have a hate-on for EA and want to avoid all their games, or if you have a terrible connection that makes it unfeasible to deal with less-than-optimal download speeds, I wouldn't avoid Origin. No real reason to.

Client's fine. It's status as "intrusive spyware" was an overblown statement of its terms of agreement, similar statements which steam possesses.

But yeah, it works fine. There's games on it. Think steam with less random shit that might not even be playable in its library. Doesn't mean it's necessarily better than steam, but it serves its purpose at being an EA gaming client.

that's one of the few games I already had on Origin since it was easier to put my CD key in there and let it do the patching for me.

One thing that might need correcting in the article is that DA:O vanilla's regular price is 19.99 not 29.99

If anyone is tempted by this I would suggest packing extra patience when trying to install. I got the Ultimate Edition when it was about a year old and all the registrations and accounts and trying to get DLC to be detected and applied was just 3 concurrent nightmares.

Although that wasn't on Origin so maybe it's different now...

It might lack the DLC but hey.. most of the DLC is not important anyway. More gifts to give your party and so on. And maybe 2 or 3 big mission/story packs.

So yeah not a bad option. Oh and for those who are so against origin. It isn't bad these days..okay it isn't steam and it has allot to do reach such level but it in the basis works.

I'd get it but.. I already have it on Steam, I mean. There can't be any harm in having two copies but it just seems like a waste, so I think I'll skip this one.
