GLaDOS and The Sniper Join Up To Support GaymerX2

GLaDOS and The Sniper have come together to express their support for the upcoming GaymerX2 convention and encourage everyone else to do the same.

Do the names Ellen McLain and John Patrick Lowrie ring a bell? No? You might know them better as GLaDOS and The Sniper, two of the many characters the husband-and-wife team of voice actors have portrayed over the years. They recently put their talents to use in support a good cause, the GaymerX2 convention, and the results are pretty fantastic.

The GaymerX2 Kickstarter has almost doubled its fundraising goal but there's still more than two weeks left in the campaign and plenty of stretch goals to achieve. At $20,000, there will be a cosplay contest and party; $30,000 will see another band added to the GaymerXConcert; $40,000 will bring McClain and Lowrie to the event for a wedding, signings, a voice acting panel and other activities; $50,000 adds a "bonus celebrity" to the lineup; and on it goes.

Without any effects, McLain's voice isn't exactly GLaDOS, but it's close enough (and creepy enough), and the passive-aggressive threats ensure that there's no mistaking it; Lowrie's turn as The Sniper is less obvious if you're not looking for it. Even so, it's great to see a couple of well-known voice actors throwing their support behind such a worthwhile cause. I hope they can help push donations to the point where they're able to attend.

GaymerX2 takes place from July 11 to 13 at the Intercontinental Hotel in San Francisco. For more information, hit up GaymerX2 Kickstarter [http://www.gaymerx.com/].

Also, even with out all the filters to make her sound robotic, Ellen McLain still sounds like Glados, and thats just amazing

Ellen McLain looks a little different in this than when I last saw a picture of her... I don't want to sound nasty and it's not my intention, but I think she's aged in the past 5 or so years.

But, she's still totally awesome. Equal parts funny and chilling. Imagine if she was your aunty or something and you were at her house for dinner.

"Now eat your vegetables. You wouldn't want to disappoint me, would you? You wouldn't like that..."

I've got some bad news for you: Based on the results of several rigorous scientific studies, everybody currently alive and of at least five years of age has aged by half a decade in that time span. Even you! If you feel you have not aged, please contact the nearest Scientist and let them know at once. They will be very interested in examining you.

Yep, and it's always interesting when people find out because I love seeing their reactions. Another couple that actually got married based on their jobs were Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, better known as the voice actors for Mickey and Minnie Mouse (well up until Mr. Allwine's death in 2009 T^T).
Another one I found interesting, while not being husband and wife, is that famous Japanese voice actors Akio Ohtsuka and Chikao Ohtsuka are father and son and have actually worked on many project together. In fact, in the Kingdom Hearts series, Chikao Ohtsuka is the voice actor of Master Xehanort and Akio Ohtsuka is the voice actor for Ansem Seeker of Darkness (Xehanort's Heartless).

Yup. They worked on the Half-Life 2 games as well. She's obviously the higher-profile of the two thanks to her work as GLaDOS, but he's provided voices for quite a few more games and appears in Left 4 Dead.

Not sure if a homosexual focused gaming convention is really necessary. All I mean by that is that this is 2014 and most gaming conventions should be pretty accepting of that sort of thing, to the point where a gay focused ones just feels a little redundant. Then again there's a lot of real world trolls out there so I could be wrong.

... This is incredible. To finally see their faces and know that I can become part of a larger cause- it's a win/win baby.

I also love how the two voice actors of such big Valve games are married. I wouldn't be surprised if big hit characters ended up having their voice actors getting married too. It all works out in the end when you think about it.
This is completely unrelated to your post and to this thread (And I will have a comment on the topic at hand but I have to say this or else my brain will implode), but I absolutely fucking love your avatar. In fact I just went wide eyed, gasped, kept my mouth agape and didn't breathe for 20 seconds. You are awesome.

OT: I just love Ellen McLain, and even without all the effects, I could still hear it in my head and clapped giddily when it ended. "Or you're just a reactionary pig." was brilliant. I knew she was in Half-Life as the voice of the Overwatch, but I didn't know what she was in L4D.. To the internets!

I knew someone was going to post something like this.

It shouldn't matter whether or not it's necessary. If the gay community wants their own convention, where they don't have to worry about listening to people calling each other 'faggots' or being all enraged that Anders hit on them once, let them. The gaming community is one of the least accepting communities I've ever seen.

OT: I forgot how much I like GLaDOS's voice actress. She's so charmingly terrifying.

Well, if nothing else McLain's voice was more recognisably GLaDOS than in her election vid.

Well actually it kind of does matter but maybe not for the reasons you think I'm going to say.

It matters because if a group of people feel that they need (or want for a better term) their own meeting place to fit in then that is a sign that they don't feel welcome in the rest of the gaming community. Maybe they don't, perhaps there are still too many homophobes for gay people to feel welcome and if that is the case, I'd say that it does matter.

Should be accepting, the key word is should

Unfortunately, the gaming community (and a large number of other communities) is still homophobic to a large degree

Even just in general life, I often read (AL Subreddit...) about people getting screamed at by their parents, thrown out, etc. for being gay. We're not living that idealistic "everyone is a chill person" dream...

I've got some news for you too; some people go decades appearing to age very little visibly. Keanu Reeves, Patrick Stewart, etc. Then all of a sudden they appear to age greatly in a short time period.

I didn't realise I'd even have to explain what I meant, but I guess that would ruin your joke at my expense.

I was going to say that this kind of thing seems unnecessary (before someone already did and several people made the very good point that most gamers are less accepting than I give them credit for), but it didn't really matter after I heard Ellen McLain and John Patrick Lowrie speak.

Know what? You guys and gals have your convention, just as long as those who aren't gay can still attend, if only to meet those two fantastic people.

I don't see why anyone who wants to attend would be turned away at the door just because they were heterosexual. A person would probably be escorted off the premises by security if he were to make homophobic comments, though. The point of an LGBT gaming convention is not to exclude heterosexual cisgendered people, but to make sure that we have a fun place to go that's relevant to our interests where we don't have to deal with all the flack we get from closed-minded individuals.
