You're probably wondering why I'm making this thread this early. While the movie is set to be released on the 29th internationally it's coming out on March 24, so we're going to get opinions on this soon in fact I found an article

Apparently, the general consensus is that it is a fun monster movie but will have to wait a little more to get a wider opinion on it.

I have HBOmax and since I'm the biggest Godzilla fan here I will watch give my opinions when I can finally see it.

Watching it tomorrow. Prediction is neither wins, and if either does, it's on a meaningless technicality and only serves as a setup to a third act fight with Doomsday anyway.

I don't know how anybody gets invested in these. It's all designed to keep every possible marketing avenue open. Ghidorah and Mothra "died" on the previous one, but before the movie ended it had already set up the possibility of more Ghidorah and Mothra. Same with Kong and/or Godzilla *if* either "dies". So who cares? They're going to have a pointless fight and then team up against a pointless villain.

I have basically zero interest for the human element or the overarching plot of this crap. Just hope the destruction porn is well lit.

I don't mind if there isn't a winner I just want it to be a good movie. This movie is directed by the same person who did the live-action death note so I am extremely worried but it seems like some critics like it which gives me hope.

Plus the Doomsday, in this case, will be Mechagodzilla so I don't mind

Weeeeeeelllll, the director also did Your Next and The Guest, both of which are mostly respected by genre film fans at least. He's also writing and directing the Face-Off sequel too, so who knows how that will turn out. It seems anime adaptations are consistently held back by trying to squeeze too much manga plot into a single film, so hopefully there's more freedom given in these IPs, but time will tell.

He also made that horrible Blair Witch sequel-but-not-really.
Wingard is just another studio hack. Dime a dozen.

Kong is the winner for me. Recently, I even watched "Congo Island" and I felt a sympathy for him. He is not a brainless monster that kills and destroys only for the sake of killing only defends his island, he takes care of it. I don't remember what happened in Godzilla, but I think Kong stole my heart more

I am such a heretic when it comes to Godzilla because Godzilla is the ultimate example of the phrase "Missing the Point"

What was the point?

"Gojira is 100 foot tall radioactive mutant dinosaur monster, that brings about death and destruction in its wake. Gojira is the Hiroshima Bomb made flesh. Fear this apocalypse bringing monster for all of humanity's military might cannot stop this walking force of nature."

What Godzilla is now "Oh Kewl, Godzilla is gonna fight Mothra in a epic destructive battle!!!, Godzilla is defending the world from alienz!!!"

While I do enjoy that as a cheeseburger fun type of thing. I kinda feel like something was loss in this transition from his original point.

Help me out here - is Godzilla male or female? This new version, specifically.

Well, assuming they're even bothering with that atomics as monster metaphor (which I'm pretty sure Japan themselves dropped after the first film, and just went for fun), you could see it as a reflection on how humanity has since found a way to harness nuclear energy, and use it to help humanity, by powering their cities. Hence Gojira is now not just a rampant force of destruction that humans cower from, but a force that can be used for good.

I mean I still think they're just of the opinion of "fuck it, giant monsters are cool, let's have them do professional wrestling in a model city" and have been for decades. But if you insist on having some "meaning" to it, there you go.

....I....I think they've refer to new Zilla as he? I honestly don't recall, and don't really care. The gender of a giant 100ft tall monster that is an avatar of the planet, who fights off other giant monsters is....probably the least important detail I can imagine.

Well I'm writing in Spanish and every goddamn word is gendered so I could use the info.
(No, there're no neutral pronouns in Spanish: no the, it, das, etc).

I think the only time Godzilla has ever been ostensibly "female" was in the shitty 1998, Matthew Broderick re-hash wherein it laid eggs, but otherwise, HE'S been the "KING" of the Monsters everywhere else.

It's genuinely funny when certain Godzilla fans blow their loads in anger when someone insinuates that Godzilla may be female.

OT: I never understood why people didn't like the latest Godzilla movie. Granted, I only watched the monster scenes on YouTube and none of the apparently crappy human character scenes. I thought the action was suitably epic, so if this movie does the same, then it's all good.

Do they? Not sure I ever heard of Godzilla's sex being a contentious issue, but then again, I've never had my finger on the pulse of Godzilla fanaticism.

I think the main issue people had with the more recent Godzilla films is how few and far between the monster scenes were. I know me and my family went to the theater to see the first remake several years ago, and were largely disappointed because Godzilla only had a few minutes of screen time. I recall feeling particularly slighted when they finally revealed him for the first time, live and in the flesh, and as soon as the fight was about to start, they cut away to humans watching footage of the conflict on a television news broadcast.

I guess there's a tacit rule in modern Hollywood that "spectacle" isn't enough of a draw when a plot, human drama, and intrigue can be shoehorned in. Hey, Hollywood, anyone paying to see "Godzilla" gives about as much a shit about the human element of the story as Godzilla does when he tosses another monster across a crowded downtown killing thousands.

I'm not a fan and I don't care if it's either, I just could use the info.
Although I guess like Xprimentyl says, KING of monsters spoils it.

Its become a running gag for one of the podcasts I follow, they refer to Godzilla as a she all the time and laugh at the consistent hate mail it gets them.

I wonder however if it's more of a cost saving measure than anything else. Two hours of just monster fights sounds expensive.

Oh I wasn't implying you cared, just sharing. Funnily enough now that I've been thinking of this topic, I can't quite figure out what I call Godzilla in my head. My language has no gender for this kinda thing either.

I think Godzilla really took some hits in the latest trailer, but that could be misdirection on purpose. I mean, what else is there to say...it’s a monster/disaster movie with high production values. The story is just along for the ride.
