GOG Adds Six Star Wars Games, More Coming Thursday

GOG has added a swathe of new Star Wars games including X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, Galactic Battlegrounds and more.

Last October, GOG delighted Star Wars and retro gaming fans everywhere when <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138249-X-Wing-Sam-Max-Monkey-Island-and-More-LucasArts-Games-Coming-to-GOG>it announced a new partnership with Disney and re-released six LucasArts retro games including <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/goodoldreviews/12580-Good-Old-Reviews-Star-Wars-X-Wing>X-Wing, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/goodoldreviews/12617-Good-Old-Reviews-Star-Wars-Tie-Fighter>Tie Fighter and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/goodoldreviews/12643-Good-Old-Reviews-Star-Wars-Knights-of-the-Old-Republic>more. That was only the beginning however. According to the terms of the deal described by GOG, the online retailer would eventually be adding more than 20 titles from the company's library of PC classics. As of this morning, we're six titles closer to that 20 game total.

GOG, in a multi-title release this morning, has added another six Star Wars games to its digital catalog. The new games cost between $4.79 and $9.99 and include the following:

Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds Saga
Star Wars: Battlefront II
Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance
Knights of the Old Republic II

Today's release marks the first time that X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance and Galactic Battlegrounds have been released digitally. All three are exclusive to GOG.

To celebrate the new additions, GOG will also be offering a 72-hour 20 percent discount on Battlefront II, Dark Forces and KOTOR II. The previous wave of LucasArts titles will receive an identical discount lasting until Friday, January 30th. Perhaps most exciting than that however, is that the new releases aren't over. According to GOG's announcement, "six more" LucasArts games will be added to the site later this week. While the company didn't indicate if they'd all be dropping at the same time, it did confirm that more will be arriving Thursday after a 48-hour timer counts down on the retailer's front page. We'll keep you updated as the week goes along and new games surface.

X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance? Fuck yes. Now I just need a joystick:/

Edit: Flight stick is apparently a more accurate term. And they're much more expensive than I realized:/

X Wing Alliance was the first PC game I ever owned and I played the hell out of it. Looking forward to running that again.

XWA? For real? And I just got my old install with all of the upgraded models working on my super modern computer. All that work...

Still, I'll probably buy it again for the convenience of not needing the cd and to hopefully show disney that there are people out there that want another xwing game.

I am totally thrilled about this.

Is $30 [http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/] too much for you? Because I have to ask then, what were you expecting?

I have that joystick, and I couldn't be happier. It's over a decade old, and it still works great.

Thank you for the suggestion. That is one I am strongly considering. The others are a Thrustmaster for $20 (pretty light on buttons though), a Thrustmaster HOTAS for $50-55 (I also learned what HOTAS meant today), and a Speedlink HOTAS for $45.

I guess looking back my old flight stick was rather cheap.

I think I know of the $20 Thrustmaster you speak of. Don't get it. It doesn't allow twist-to-roll. I'm not sure of the $45 or $50 sticks, but unless you're a serious flight sim player, you don't need to spend that much. I'm a huge fan of my $30 stick, because it has all the features you really need, and it's not super expensive, when you consider the fun you can have with the Star Wars games, Freespace, and Descent. That's only 3 series I'm counting, and I think that will more than pay for itself.

Looking back too, I remember playing Xwing on a cheepo joystick too. 2 button, 2 axis, and they put the damn fire button on the top of the stick, making you press down each time you wanted to shoot it. I remember upgrading to another 2b2a stick, but it had more of a gun-trigger on it, so suddenly, our accuracy shot through the roof. It also had suction cups on the bottom for more stability. Ran with that thing until I got a Sidewinder 3D pro. Never looked back at those old crappy sticks.

X-Wing Alliance is the only game I've ever built a PC specifically to play, as it had trouble running on Windows 7. For any newcomers to it, I high recommend the total conversion mods from the X Wing Alliance upgrade team (just google XWAU). All ship models and textures massively upgraded, including newly released high res backdrops. One of my favourite games and mods respectively.

I know there was a tweak to allow widescreen support which worked for me back in the day, would be great if GOG incorporated it into their version.
