GOG Countdown Revealed: It's Activision

The secret of the Activision [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97773-Mysterious-Countdown-Ticks-Away-at-GOG-com], the world's biggest publisher, has hopped on the bus.

GOG has been awesome since it launched in 2008, with a library of cheap, DRM-free videogame classics that's been growing steadily ever since. But there's awesome and then there's holy frikkin' awesome, and this deal with Activision [http://www.activision.com] and its huge library of great games is most definitely the latter.

The Activision deal launched with two great games: The Troika RPG Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura]. Both games are selling for $5.99 with extras like hi-res wallpapers and forum avatars, and as usual are tweaked to run without hassle on modern hardware and operating systems.

The addition of Activision is exciting because of the potential wealth of new (old) games it brings to the party: Sierra classics like the Quake [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_Quest] games marching under the Activision flag, this deal has the potential to be absolutely huge, for GOG and gamers alike.

I have many a fond memory of Mechwarrior. I used to play it with my friend on my Dad's PC. Please bring them back.

Reading some of the GOG interviews, they seem to have many more aces up their sleeve. In march there will be another major announcement, some think it will be them coming out of Beta and possibly having The Witcher on there.

They also mention talks with other big publishers, and I know how much they love their games so I know they will be eager to get the likes of EA, Lucasarts, Microsoft and the rest on board.

Exciting times indeed!

Interview 2 [http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/01/28/interview-cd-projekts-co-founder-talks-gog-com-the-witcher-2/]

(similar topics covered, some slight variations)

I've heard about Arcanum before, but I've never actually gotten to try it out. How is it by today's standards?

Well of course the graphics are a bit dated (not THAT bad) by todays's standards, but it's a pretty deep RPG. Think Fallout meets Baldur's Gate set in a Victorian steam-punk setting.

Very fun.

Oh my gog. I've been looking for a copy of Arcanum for years. Anyone know if they own the rights to Planescape Torment as well? :D

I've never minded bad graphics (BG2 is still one of my favorite games). I was just worried that the mechanics themselves would be clunky (not the BG isn't clunky, but I already know AD&D, so...).

I'll check it out.

I tried Arcanum a few months back, and I was surprised at how deep it could be. I'd created a dwarf with (I think) low Charisma, and got an injury early on that further lowered it. Very often, when I'd approach someone, they would comment on how ugly I was, and I had to use a diplomatic approach to get them to talk with me. I'm told the dialogue can also change if you are particularly dumb.

I hadn't actually heard of Arcanum until I saw it on PCPowerplay's [http://www.pcpowerplay.com.au/content/] list of "games that defined the decade", so I'll definitely have to take a look at that. Gabriel Knight looks interesting too.
