My personal experience would be: don't assume that you're going to be bestest friends with your dorm roommate, or even with any of the people on your floor. Don't get me wrong, they might be great people, and I'm not saying to immediately dismiss them if you do like them; it's just that the selection process that goes into putting people together in dorms often seems to rank somewhere between "throw darts at a board" and "twisted side project of a fifth-year Psych Major". Don't force friendliness if it turns out you're neighbors with someone who screams and throws smuggled bottles of alcohol at the shared wall at three in the morning. Be civil, but don't feel more is demanded.

But, do find a support network; you're far more likely to find people with common interests in your major classes or any clubs/activities you decide to partake in. And if you have to walk across campus to be with those people with whom you actually have common ground, that's not a terrible thing.
