Gone Home Custom Map Lands In Counter-Strike

Gone Home's iconic house map is now a fan-made hostage scenario for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Gone Home has been out for over a year, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/experienced-points/12228-Spectacular-Storytelling-in-Gone-Home>and it's still getting lots of attention from the gaming community. It's a widely-recognized breakout hit <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/5462-Lazy-Boring-Ordinary-Art-Games>from the relatively calm exploration genre, but apparently some players see Gone Home and think "You know what this needs? More hostage situations." That explains why one intrepid level designer ported Gone Home's house map to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, adding far more terrorists and counter-terrorists than the original allowed for.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the latest edition of Valve's multiplayer shooter franchise, which allows fans to add custom maps directly through the Steam Workshop. That's where the "cs_gonehome" can be found, a recreation of Gone Home's house designed by workshop contributor <a href=http://steamcommunity.com/id/nipper/myworkshopfiles/?appid=730>NIPPER. In this map, the counter-terrorists must find and escort a randomly-spawned hostage to a rescue zone the garage, while the terrorist team tries to prevent them from doing so.

"Your family is mysteriously missing again," the description reads. "But you can figure that out later. Right now you have more pressing issues to attend to, like the fact that your house is full of terrorists and some dude has been taken hostage. Rescue him by taking him to the garage where you can make a swift getaway on that old bike [that's] been sitting there for twenty years."

All things considered, that's a pretty amusing mash-up. Now how about that BioShock/Gone Home crossover? <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131855-Update-Ken-Levine-Speaks-Gone-Home-BioShock-Share-A-Universe>It's supposed to be canon, after all. In the meantime, Gone Home is expected <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137134-Gone-Home-Coming-to-Wii-U-Near-Future>to head to the Wii U next.

I will never understand the hype surrounding Gone Home. It was awful, yet is feverishly defended by some for being "progressive" and "clever".

Whenever anyone brings up Gone Home I am compelled to reinstall and play through the game again. Unfortunately being exploration based it's one of those experiences that's never quite as powerful once you know what the entire house is like and where everything is.

Also for being a fun game.

Well, it's easy to understand: There's a lesbian romance plot, therefore it is progressive and perfect in every way!

I don't actually have the same complaints about Gone Home as others do; to me it appears to be similar to old click and point adventure games in tone and style, just from a first person perspective. I don't think there's anything wrong with that sort of game - I don't agree that it's "awful" - but at the very least, I don't think it lives up to the hype.

From some of the scant descriptions I'd heard and some of the promotional art seen I had assumed it was some kind of neat murder mystery or horror story, but actually wasn't anything so interesting :(

OT: I don't particularly care for theme maps in CS, especially since I doubt the Gone Home map translates well to a shooter arena, but I do like the ironic twist of blending the two completely different games.

Playing that map in the game will bring more fun and entertainment then Gone Home is capable of accomplishing.

The description actually got a chuckle out of me.

I actually liked Gone Home for what it was. I mean, I don't think it's a paragon of innovation and virtue or anything. I just don't understand a lot of the vitriol that gets spewed about it. That being said, it was a one-time experience, that was almost certainly not worth 15 USD.

As for Counter Strike... never really got into Source. Mostly just bought it so I could use it with G-Mod. Might grab this one while it's on sale or something.

From that third image (and the map description), I am now imagining Katie (Gone Home's PC) arriving home, opening the front door, seeing the dead body of some terrorist in the lobby and thinking "Well, shit..."

Gone Home was fun. Different, but fun. And it definitely tugged at my heartstrings quite well (Especially with the growing concern over what I might ultimately find in the attic).

Shooter multiplayer is also fun, but for entirely different reasons. And this is one of the more amusing mash-ups I've seen in a while. I do have to wonder how well the map is balanced for team combat though...

I actually liked the game, but imo, it's only because I played it without knowing the ending beforehand. It's pretty magical that way, but going in knowing what the game is about could possibly 'kill it' for a lot of people

Man, I can't wait to plant the bomb at dad's stash of unsold books. Maybe the hosties will be all of the strategically placed letters detailing his writing career and we can rescue them.

Maybe if we drag a match out for an hour we can get the "Heavy Handed" achievement.

.
huh an actual fair criticism

I mean I can see how $15 might be a little much for some people, I really enjoyed it and feel like I got my moneys worth

I think if you know what kind of game it is without knowing the plot (and are fine with that) then I think Gone home was great

The Sister was just about to kill herself right before Her Army bound girlfriend came back. Why is the wife leaving evidence of her affair lying around the house? Talk about tropes against women

That description is awesome.

Oh, and since we're having the requisite hate-on for Gone Home, let me just add my voice to those who liked it. It was good at what it attempted to be: A quiet, contemplative little piece of exploratory artwork and character development.

Am I weird for liking Gone Home for the other plots more than the 'main' plot? I thought it was still interesting. It is possible to like the game without also considering it some paragon of innovation.

That said, I suppose it COULD have used more gun battles and hostage situations.
