The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett has more than a few; a talking sword (owned by Hrun the barbarian? I remember it showing up rather early in the series), the wizard's hat in Sorcerer, the Gonne in Men at Arms, and I believe a few more that escape me presently.
Wasn't that less alive in the general sense, and more that people think they're an action hero when they get a firearm (which is a very real issue)? Not read that for awhile, though.
