Google Says "Don't Be a Glasshole"

Google is asking early adopters of its high-tech eyewear to please not be a "Glasshole" in public.

Google Glass is apparently the latest way for thoughtless jerks to be rude in public. Okay, maybe that's a little much, but the newness of the technology and the fact that you wear it on your face instead of carrying it in your pocket makes it the sort of thing that can lead to unexpected complexity in social interactions. But have no fear, because Google's got your back.

Google has posted a guide to polite behavior for Glass "Explorers," using the collected wisdom of some of its long-time users to create a handy list of "do's and don't's." "Do" things like use voice commands to keep your hands free, be an active member of the Glass community and ask permission before using your swanky super-goggles to take photos or videos of other people; and "don't" wear Glass while participating in high-impact sports and get irked or impatient when people ask you about it.

But most important of all? Please, don't be a "glasshole."

"Respect others and if they have questions about Glass don't get snappy. Be polite and explain what Glass does and remember, a quick demo can go a long way," the guide says. "In places where cell phone cameras aren't allowed, the same rules will apply to Glass. If you're asked to turn your phone off, turn Glass off as well. Breaking the rules or being rude will not get businesses excited about Glass and will ruin it for other Explorers."

Perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I can't help thinking that the whole guide could be condensed to that one simple admonition: Don't be a Glasshole. But I suppose if it was that easy, we wouldn't still be telling people to turn off their cellphones in movie theaters.

It's refreshing to see a corporation acknowledging responsibilities for their product. It's certainly not going to stop all issues, but it's a solid step. Also, puns. Puns are great.

It's sad that people have to be reminded to not be dicks to each other.

It's like training dogs, they have to be reminded about a thousand times before they get the message.

Also, I can see Glasshole becoming a meme quite easily.

Couldn't we just consolidate the list further by saying "Don't buy this product"?

Same with the cellphone watch.

Some ideas are cool in sci-fi and theory, but they're ridiculous in real life.

You said irked twice.

On topic. Seems simple enough, treat it like a phone on your face ... which actually makes google glass sound fucking stupid. Though, I don't think it's an amazing piece of tech in the first place, makes you look more stupid than people who walked around with those blu tooth tusks, that made people look like they were talking to themselves.

The first 4-6 months after they hit the market is going to be insufferable.

Remember the first 4-6 months after the iPhone hit? "Oh, let me just look that up on my SMART PHONE. Look at this really awesome TOUCHSCREEN GAME. Bro, Bro! I can totally look up porn on my awesome new iPhone!"

Fucking hipsters.

I still don't know how I'm supposed to wear this when I already wear glasses.

Not that I want a Google camera I have to pay for potentially recording everything I do.

Sounds like it can be paraphrased thus: Don't be a prick. No one likes a show off and in time others can get one and you'll be less special. Like I say to all beta testers; congratz guinea pig

They released a frame that works with prescription lenses. You can move the device from the frame it comes on to that, or you can get a third party thing that snaps on to the existing frame and holds prescription lenses.

They should add "Don't refer to yourselves as 'Explorers' or 'the Glass community'" since excessive eye rolling may lead to eye strain.

The corporation that finds a way to persuade everyone not to be jerks is going to end up ruling the world. And I think I'm okay with that!

So long as it's not over nine thousand. That tends to lead to technical issues.

I'd go for a regular watch that *also* gave me the information available on my phone's home screen: who's calling, maybe the first couple words of any new text, that sort of thing.

Imagine this watch, but if it displayed that info in the monochrome LCD:

Arnoxthe1 says to Google: Don't be a Tubehole. Seriously, it's like they devote so much quality time to seemingly everything else except Youtube these days. WTH?

I'd love to try Glass but the cheapest I've seen them come up on ebay here in the UK is £600 mark, too rich for my passing fancy. Cool tech, makes you look like a wally though.

Does crushing it in your fist count as a technical issue?
Seem more like a user error.

Anyway, kinda surprised i can't find a powellevel app, would have expected it to be build 10 sec after the release of the dev kit.
although, i don't have one, so i'm not looking that hard.

Same with the bluetooth headsets.
I still think someone wearing one looks like a douche.(outside using one while driving at least)
Although i want to like tech gadgets like these, i fear for glass the same fate.

Reminds me of "gargoyles" from Snow Crash. Nobody liked those guys, either.

Don't be silly, you'd need an Apple Tricorder for that.

OT: At least they're trying to encourage people to act in a manner that is likely to prevent their expensive glasses from being yanked off their faces and stamped on by a livid stranger. A little consideration helps the world go 'round.
