Google, Yahoo, Facebook & Microsoft Reveal NSA Spying Request Data

The data's subject to a six month reporting delay, and the providers still can't be specific about the number of requests.

In separate reports, Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Microsoft [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130391-Microsoft-and-Google-Lead-Plan-to-Reform-Government-Surveillance] have revealed how many national security demands they receive. None of them can be entirely candid, since there are constraints on the information they divulge. They're unable to disclose precise numbers or types of request, and the data is subject to a six month delay before it can be reported.

Facebook [http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/75496314481/more-transparency-for-u-s-national-security-requests] also received less than 1,000 demands.

Google and Yahoo's figure is higher because some of the requests affected more than one account. Taking Google as an example, in July to December 2012 it reports 0-999 requests, but those requests affected somewhere between 12,000 to 13,000 accounts. According to Yahoo, this can happen when a user has more than one account, or when the request names an account that does not, in fact, exist. Even if there is no account, the request is still part of the count.

"Only a fraction of a percent of our users are affected by these orders," says Microsoft's Brad Smith. "In short, this means that we have not received the type of bulk data requests that are commonly discussed publicly regarding telephone records." Of course, that does assume the NSA bothers to send out an order. The history of continuing reveals to date [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124721-NSA-Harvests-Facebook-Google-Apple-User-Data-Secret-Files-Claim], seems to indicate that going through channels isn't something the NSA excels at.

Am I the only one concerned that Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, and Facebook (all corporate entities, made for the purpose of generating profit) collect this information which the NSA (a government entity, made for the purpose of ensuring public safety and/or the continuance of federal governance) then uses? Everyone complains that the NSA collects this information without public knowledge, but there's considerably less outcry when the megacorps do it.

Its mostly down to people not really caring. For example on Facebook, everybody willingly gives over their real name and displays it to the public. Along with other things that should be kept private in some cases.

It's a matter of convenience.

People /could/ stop using Google, but that would be a hassle, so they don't. What Google does is legal, and it's not like they're obligated to keep the site running.

Not condoning the practice by the NSA, but I can find out more about people today without much work by internet searches than I could have 10 years ago. Mainly because people seem to care little about their own privacy when posting things on the internet.

The NSA just wants to look at that thing I'm not really suppose to talk about much on the Escapist while on duty so that they can get paid while effectively wasting time.
