Gotham Unveils Its Dapper-Looking Penguin

Robin Lord Taylor is Gotham's Oswald Cobblepot, a low-level henchmen destined for greatness in the city's underworld.

Fox certainly has been throwing its weight behind Gotham lately, with <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132644-Gotham-Casts-Bruce-Wayne-and-Selina-Kyle>Bruce Wayne, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/11180-Let-this-Catwoman-Cosplay-Gallery-Steal-Your-Afternoon>Selina Kyle, and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133218-Fox-Unveils-Gothams-Alfred-Pennyworth>Alfred Pennyworth being featured in recent weeks. But as with any good Batman story, prequel or otherwise, a great deal of its strength will lie in its villains. And I'm not talking about <a href=http://ca.eonline.com/news/525167/jada-pinkett-smith-debuts-cropped-red-dipped-do-on-gotham-set>Jada Pinkett Smith's "Fish Mooney" (whoever that is); you need characters like Joker, Two Face, or Riddler reimagined before they became Gotham's notorious criminals. The first to appear, but certainly not the least, will be Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, pictured here as a low-level lackey within the greater Gotham underworld.

Batman fans will know Oswald Cobblepot as the Penguin, one of the oldest villains in Batman's 75-year history. In modern continuity, Penguin is a genius and criminal mastermind who managed to carve out his own niche among Gotham's mob families, even running "The Iceberg Lounge" nightclub while posing as a legitimate businessman. Gotham will apparently address the early days of Penguin's career, working as a henchman for Mooney and dreaming of the day he'll assume control of the empire.

From a visual standpoint, Taylor will be taller than how Cobblepot is usually portrayed, but still maintains a dapper and gentlemanly demeanor. Of course this is all for appearance's sake, as Penguin is ruthless and sadistic, willing to kill anyone to achieve his goals. Taylor should provide a rather sinister interpretation of the character, although given Gotham's emphasis on child characters, I imagine the series won't veer too far past a PG-13 representation. We'll have to see when the pilot airs in the 2014-2015 television season.

The Joker comes from the Aether. He exists because he CAN exist. WHO the Joker was before he put on the Smile is Irrelevant, and I would argue character ruining. The Joker was always there beneath the surface of the Man, held in check by the rules of behavior for people and Society. ....Until he sees Batman. Then he realizes that all the Rules are Illusions, and there really is NOTHING stopping you from putting on a Costume and doing whatever the Blazing Fuck you feel like.

I loved how In Dark Knight, the Joker tell all kinds of fabricated stories about his scars, alluding to an Origin Story, but he's just Clownin'.

I can tell I am in NO WAY the target audience for this show, so I wont flame it. I will say that The Penguin is a fat guy, and here he looks more like The Doctor than the Penguin. As for Bane, I can't see how making him into Flash Thompson will help the character.

Why is he some low-level mook for someone completely random? I mean, alright you want to show his rise to mob boss as some sort of parallel to Bruce Wayne and James Gordon rising to their respective positions, but Penguin's whole schtick is that he's actually from a kind of high class family. The Cobblepots are essentially the Waynes but with no morals and shittier luck. If you don't want him starting off a gang leader surely having his dad be the guy he's working for would make more sense. Watch him rise through the ranks by usurping and betraying his family in contrast to Batman and Gordon forging alliances and (in Batman's case at least) trying to live up to his family's values

Wow... His face give off a Penguin vibe to me... It's almost hypnotic...

Anyway, I'm just want to see this Penguin holding an umbrella sometimes, smoking a sophisticated cigar, and occasionally putting on his monocle... To me, it wasn't his weight that made the Penguin... It was the accessories that he usually carried with him whenever he made an appearance...

Not Nolan North? That's a damn shame, but then I know next to nothing about the character outside of the Burton film. What's he supposed to be? Creepy or asshole businessman? I'm fairly certain DeVito's portrayal wasn't all that true to the source.

They've more or less settled on semi-legitimate arms dealer/nightclub owner. Most of the time I've been reading, Cobblepot has spent more time trying to outwit Bruce Wayne rather than Batman.

The idea of the Joker even showing up in this series terrifies me - in a bad way. There's no Joker without Batman, and this series is explicitly pre-Batman. Batman is somehow tied to whatever created the Joker. And giving the Joker a solid backstory... would make him into someone other than the Joker.

The most I'd be willing to see is a time-travelling episode or flashforward in which the Joker appeared, but I doubt the series wants to go that far 'beyond the possible'.

It is a prequel, so Oswald has lots of time to gain a few pounds.

As far as I can remember he was a rejected child of the family, never really getting the best advantages of his high class heritage.

See, I wish they'd go with the Arkham City version. I liked the Kray twins-style East London thug with delusions of grandeur. The clear disconnect between his genteel fantasy and the thuggish reality gave a lot of unspoken depth to that version. Plus, yet another reason that 2012 was the year that Nolan North suddenly became awesome.
