Grenade Spam

It seems this is a becoming more and more of a problem, half the times I get killed in COD4 I see the kill-cam and it is just someone looking up at 45 degrees from their spawn point and throwing three grenades in quick succession at roughly the position of enemy spawn. And it's not just COD series, it seems every war shooter that tries to implement grenades as they are in real life with a 5 second fuse, 5 meter kill radius and ability to be thrown like a baseball, the same emergent behaviour appears over and over again.

So should we tolerated grenades spam in video games, or would you rather play a game that eliminated or reduced it? I've had a few ideas other than a complete ban of grenades:

-remove 3 grenade perk completely? so 1 frag grenade only
-reduce frag-grenade fuse to 2.5-3 seconds, and make throwing arm weaker so fast high arcs ar impossible
-reduce kill-radius of grenades in the open so they are deadly within 5 meters only if detonated in a room (enclosed space amplifies blast).
-no points awarded for grenade kill outside a certain distance
-move overhead cover to make it hard to throw or hard to land on the ground
-High wind conveniently blows any high-arcing grenade onto a roof if the game detects spam?? (too silly)
-much more cover such with tunnels, trenches, bunkers and so on.
-more shin deep water at grenade spam points. I hear if a grenade detonates under just 10 inches or water or just in a bucket of water, there is a big splash but most of the fragments and blast are stopped.

Or should we just learn to live with it and accept that if we want to play a "realistic" war game we can't be making gentlemen's agreements to only kill each other face to face, that died out in the 19th century when armies last used to line up in front of each other in a field in brightly coloured uniforms then take turns shooting each other (not entirely accurate but you get my gist).

So grenade spam, ban it, discourage it, or accept it?

Oddly enough, grenades killed me the LEAST back in CoD4. My deaths were 95% bullets, 4% melee/helicopter/airstrike, and 1% grenades.

Maybe I'd have gotten more kills if I remembered to use MY grenades. I always died without throwing mine...

I didn't even know CoD4 had a 3 grenade perk. Last time I played it it was 3 special grenades.
Even though grenade spam gets you killed it's only at start when predictable. Most of the times random grenadekills don't usually occur.

Accept it.
I mean unless you own the server. Then you can discourage it.
If not you just have to deal with it. Gamers will always use the advantages available to them. More so if it isnt a glitch and is just part of the natural game.
I have always thougt the point of battle was to fight tooth and nail for ever advantage/win within your grasp.

One of the downfalls of online multiplayer gaming is that there will always be those players who resort to the cheapest tactics.

I find it odd that the spawn points are close enough to be within grenade distance. Either that or the throw is way overpowered.

Grenades are the only way to force people out of cover, since you don't have a flamethrower in MW2.

Grenades are the ultimate anti camper weapon.

i don't agree i love grenades although i'm not one to spam i am one of those ppl u simply drops a grenade on his feet b4 he dies so when the person that killed me walks past my body he usually dies with me. and i don't find grenade "spamming" that difficult i mean the first death ya its annoying but after i simply avoid that person

Only on wetwork was grenade spamming a problem and every other games have the right amount of grenades balanced with power. I've yet to see someone just spamming grenades because they only have to few to even try it. Grenades are also for strategy. For instance, I use them to pressure the enemy or lure them out for a kill, I would rather have a game with grenades than without unless there's a way to get a near unlimited amount of them.

Alto I don't play CoD, I heard a lot of complaints.

It's funny, when people don't complain as much, while playing other games.

It's because of the small maps.

If you play a game like BF:BC or BF:BC2, it happens a lot less because of the wide open maps.

And, I believe you get at least 4 grenades, at least in the first one.

To be honest I don't think that some games make grenades realistic enough. I'll use your example of COD4 and the 45 degree grenade "mortar". I'm almost certain that you'd be able to throw a hand-grenade much further than 10ft. without staring into the sky (Take Counter-Strike: Source or Battlefield 2 as an example on how grenades should be thrown). Additionally, there is that issue of the grenade "blast radius", I think that just because you are out of the 7ft. kill zone doesn't mean that you should live, the shrapnel would def. probably kill you anyhow. But that's just my opinion. However, I do agree that grenade spam is a very annoying tactic to deal with at times, it's a part of the game and should be used at the players discretion.

Gears did not suffer from this problem.... all you brought to the party was smoke grenades and you had to go find the good ones... :)

Yeah, in this version you get a perk called "Slaughterdom" every time you get shot, sprint, or reload, it drops twelve grenades. It's pretty cool.

Let me guess. Its like 15 extra bucks to unlock it with DLC that's already on the disk right?

Actually, you get this perk if you spend the majority of the games screaming incoherently into your mic, you can unlock it even faster if you start playing grainy versions of songs through your mic mid-game. Oh, and team-killing helps.
