In the trailer it showed an ex bank robber dealing with his family. They seemed like total douchebags. I thought to myself, I would shoot them and free myself of hearing about the moral implications but the game can't let you. The only freedom you have is to take on minigames. Mass Effect gave you choices that atleast felt like you were doing something but sandbox games just feel like a minigame collection.

So you don't like GTA because the characters are dicks and you want a option to not to be a dick?

I don't know what you expected really, GTA freedom was always "go everywhere to do shit" not the "shape your path" kinda of deal, plot wise GTA is pretty linear.

Very few developers (including Rockstar) understand how to make a sandbox game. You can tell Rockstar designs the city first then throws in missions just hoping they turn out well. On the other hand, Mercenaries (PS2/Xbox) designed the missions and areas separately, then placed them all on an empty canvas to create their world. There were so many ways to go about beating a mission in Mercenaries and the game actually cared how you did them as well. You had to keep all the factions happy and there was a way to do every mission without alerting the faction that it was you. It was almost like a puzzle game in figuring out how to do each mission. Since every mission was designed as a separate entity great care went into designing the map layout of each mission and enemy placement as well. Whereas most sandbox games just spawn X amount of enemies here and have you take them all out, that wasn't the case in Mercenaries. GTA doesn't care about how you go about killing the enemies so it doesn't matter if you just shoot them or fly a chopper into them, the choice and freedom you have just doesn't matter.

Sandbox games are always about creating your own fun. It's why I consider GTA IV the worst in the series - it removed all of the options to create your OWN fun, and relied only on structured missions. For what it's worth, though, Liberty City was beautifully created and a real technical marvel.

GTA V, however, appears to be returning to the SA mindset, giving the players tools and letting them create fun on their own terms however they so chose. It's still the best Sandbox I've ever played simply because of the amount of insanity that's stuffed inside.
The characters, though, are apart of Rockstar's missions, and so don't really come under the "sandbox" part of the game.

As long as there's more to do than errands and phone calls, it'll be a lot better than IV. Whether or not it lives up to the kind of freedom you want, however, is entirely subjective.

OP is comparing a RPG to a sandbox. That's false logic.

Think about the term sandbox. Isn't it obvious? You have the sand (=activities in the game) and a box (=the area you can wander in). Most likely, you shape it accordingly to your own desires. You simply play with a free will to build anything from the "sand" provided by the devs.

And welcome to reality. If you ever have kids, you'll need overcome even bigger psychological barriers to please them or convince otherwise. GTA5 portrays that quite spot-on.

OP, all of your complaints are invalid.
