Guardians of the Galaxy: Next big thing or the next big flop?

Now I'm a Marvel fan, I'm not going to pretend otherwise, but this movie seems like it's trying to reproduce the magic of The Avengers with a team of heroes in what will probably be the most 'out there' comic movie made in recent history.

Now don't get me wrong, I want it to work. I want it to be awesome and Rocket Raccoon is enough to sell me the concept as a movie, but this could easily be a disaster (Iron Man 2 showed how bad things can get) and I really want it to work.

Like the idea or not though, at the end of the day Guardians may be the riskiest comic book movie ever made, more so then even the Avengers, which had 5 movies to build a fan base for what where at worst B list heroes, while Guardians is at best a C list hero team (though recently in both the comics and animated series they have been showing up more and more, and probably not by coincidence).

I want this to work, and given Marvel's movie making machine and backed by Disney it probably will, but what are your thoughts?

Are there any trailers for it? I Googled it but only a handful of...questionable (IE Probably fan made) trailers showed up.

Going off of the names involved, this looks to be setting itself up as a "Lone Ranger" flop. Bradley Cooper is your biggest name in this film and it's just his voice. Your Director is someone that has primarily done TV Shows (and except for PG Porn...yeah, that's what it's called, all of them look like they went nowhere). So you've got no real star power for actors and no names for the director in a genre that can be relatively niche...

I'm not a "comic nerd" but I am a regular nerd and therefore I know more about comics than most regular people and I have no clue who any of these guys are. That doesn't mean it can't succeed but as you stated, Avengers got multiple movies to introduce all those comic book characters to the mass market. I knew who Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, etc. were but except maybe The Hulk, I would bet many non-nerds didn't know who the hell those people were if it wasn't for their stand-alone movies.

Time shall tell but if I was in Vegas with lines on how well this movie would do, I'd be going low on this one.

I have high hoped it will be a success given to their track records well the films relating to the Avengers unless they are going to pull a Pixar on us (their films hasn't been so great lately).

it's going to be the hardest movie to get right marvel has made yet, but I am pretty excited for it. I get the feeling that somewhere Marvel has a group of people who are watching all the productions like hawks to ensure quality and I would be surprised if they let a bad movie even get to theaters lest it taint the image of the whole movie continuity. So I highly doubt that the movie will be a train wreck, at worst I think the movie will be disappointing

It'll make shittons of money.

Seriously, Marvel has made money on everything they've put out. Iron Man 2, arguably the worst so far, grossed 600 million dollars.

I think geeks will love and bicker, critics will be very meh and it'll do well at the box office overall.

Well look at it this way; if you could go back in time and tell a comic book fan from a decade ago that an Iron Man movie would make over 1 billion dollars at the box office, they'd have laughed in your face.

Marvel know what they're doing with this, its gonna do alright.

Yeah, basically this. In other words, it'll be like most every Marvel movie that's come out before it where only The Incredible Hulk had a luke warm box office, but still made $263 million at box office

I think it will do well financially, at least at first, because of the general excitement that still hovers around the Marvel movie continuum. In the long run, like past the first couple of weekends, I'm not so sure. I think it largely depends on just how weird they go with it. If they go full weird, it will probably end up better as a movie and will find a place as a cult classic. If they go too mainstream, it will probably do better financially but will be less as a movie and will ultimately fade from most peoples thoughts.

Based on what we've seen so far.. well, there's just not much to say. The characters look pretty well done. That's kind of it though.

The main problem I see is that it has (I guess) a lot more unknown characters and not nearly as much setup-time as Avengers had. I'm going to watch it of course...but a lot depends on how well they present the story and how good it is. If its good...people will have no problems watching talking raccoons. Thats my 2?.

i think we have reached the point where "it's part of the marvel movie crossover thing" is enough to draw even the casual crowd, they will watch this over whatever launches close to it because they liked the other movies and want to know what is going on in avengers 2.
and why are people so excited about the talking raccoon?, did you not grow up with cartoons?

As long as its called "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy" and not just "Guardians of the Galaxy" I'm sure it'l do fine financially. Who knows if it'l be any good but I've enjoyed all the Avengers-verse films so far (even Ironman 2) so heres hoping.

I do think its Strange that we're getting this before other Marvel characters though, I'd never heard of GOTG, before the movie announcement.

I dont want to write it off just yet, but I am worried that it may be to "comic book weird" for the average movie goer. I know I'm going to hear a bunch of comments about that "Talking raccoon and tree-thing"

Actually, that's a good point. Marvel has had a pretty good track record with their movies lately, so maybe they'll do well with this one

The Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have proven that it doesn't matter who's in the movie in question, actor or character, as long as the movie is actually good. I'm also pretty sure that Disney have predicted this won't rank as high as the others at box office, but it'll still make money hand over fist.

I think it's to lay the groundwork for Thanos, who seems set to be the villain of the third Avengers film.

Still don't think Iron Man 2 is as bad as people make out, I thought Iron Man 3 was disgustingly bad so it makes 2 looks better. I think it should be a good movie, phase 2 has set the bar pretty low with Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and the first half of Agents of Shield.

But Capt. American looks good and the 2nd half of Shield looks quite promising so I'm gonna remain optimistic.

Comic Book weird? It's Space Opera. A genre that has done surprisingly well over the years. Sci Fi action. If no one told you it was from a comic book you would never know.

The teaser images look great and they've got a solid cast. The plot could be a little shaky since they're building off of nothing, but it makes sense that they wouldn't have origin movies for 5 different C-listers(maybe not c-list, but certainly not mainstream yet). Marvel seems to be keeping the MCU pretty tight, so while I don't think it'll beat Avengers, I'd say worst case scenario: it'll do pretty good.

Honestly the novelty of "OMG it's a talking-space raccoon! How wacky!" has worn off on me now. I still hope the movie is good, but it's going to have to sell me a good plot and not just rely on outlandishness.
