Guillermo del Toro Has GlaDOS On Board for Sci-Fi Movie

Del Toro used his daughter's wiles to talk Valve into lending him Ellen McClain's voice.

You may have heard Guillermo del Toro's upcoming science fiction epic Pacific Rim [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1663662/] features robots versus giant monsters in a battle to save humanity, but there's a fun fact you may not be aware of. One of the robot's AI programs has a very familiar voice, as del Toro has persuaded Valve to lend him GlaDOS for just a short while.

The reveal came during a New York Comic Con interview. "I'm a big fan of Valve," del Toro said, adding "Portal and Left 4 Dead have been instrumental family experiences at my house." When Del Toro made the call to Gabe Newell, del Toro used his daughter's influence to seal the deal. "Like a complete geek," according to Del Toro, she - he didn't specify which of his two children it was - let her love for Valve shine through, and helped clinch it. "My family was instrumental," del Toro beamed.

The video interview can be found here. [http://kotaku.com/5951086/guillermo-del-toros-next-movie-has-a-little-glados-in-it] Colossi-versus-Kaiju fest Pacific Rim - featuring Ron Perlman and Idris Elba among others - has a July 2013 release date.

Ever since Pan's Labyrinth, I am quite the Del Toro fan. Adding GlaDOS' voice into that? Wow. Awesome. I just hope they won't make it too obvious but rather use McClain's voice for something good, something individual rather than actually copying the character.

I hope this doesn't get poor Ellen McLain pigeonholed - but good to see her getting work, none-the-less.

I didn't think of it that way. I believe voice actors generally don't get that treatment nearly as badly as live-action actors do, so long as she's capable of a wider range.

In any case Del Toro is a boss and this article put a smile on my face.

Voice acting is a very different business than onscreen acting. If you have a time machine and go back and watch a lot of works with Amanda Winn Lee. she played Yohko in the Devil Hunter Yohko series, and then went on to play Rei Ayanami. One of the jokes she gave in the commentary was that the entire goal was to get her to shut up for a while.

Yeah, actually a lot of my incite comes from watching the VA commentaries on Darker than Black episodes I watched recently. It seems to me that voice actors generally have a much larger catalog of roles they can play. Women playing young boys is a good example.

This is the first movie I've heard of in a long, long time that I've actually thought; I look forward to this!

Considering he had to get Gabe Newell's approval, I'd say McLain probably is meant to be playing GLaDOS herself, otherwise I don't see why they couldn't just hire her separately.

"Good. Now that you've survived my seemingly endless gauntlet of test chambers and its near-complete destruction by my own former Stupidity Core, I would like you to kill this giant monster using nothing but the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device.

For Science.

If you happen to die during your attempt, don't feel too bad about it. After all, you're only human. It's expected that you'll fail, and fail miserably. You have Ron Perlman on your side, however, so I suppose his cigar-chomping gravitas does count for something."

Just waiting for the obvious porn-parody "Pacific Rim Job" featuring (...)robots versus giant monsters in a battle(...). You're welcome, the images I just created in your head.

CAPTCHA: upper crust. Oh, that's just icing on the cake.

Ellen McLain has an absolutely beautiful voice and is a trained operatic singer (as if Cara Mia didn't show that off to wonderful effect), so I doubt she's stuck as "the voice of GLaDOS" for the rest of her life. It would be a waste of her talent if Del Toro just wanted her to reprise that role in different media.

I cannot WAIT until next year for this.

GdT can be hit-or-miss (Hellboy II wasn't that great, but I think he could stage a comeback if they do HB III, and Blade II is great if for nothing else but the soundtrack, which rivals Sucker Punch for the best "I'm gonna kick your ass" music I have in my collection), but on the whole, I feel he has an eye for visualization and love for craft that few filmmakers have.

Plus Ron Perlman. I love that guy.

Haha! God I love Darker than Black...But I too have noticed especially in Anime, that voice actors have such a huuuge spread of roles that they do. I love looking through rhe voice actor lists and going "Oh wow..he does X..oh..I totally recognize the voice now..and wow..shes this person" its really funny how many roles they take and sometimes you dont even notice.

OT: Im looking forward to this, but the role seems very similar so I do hope she isnt forced to do the GLADOS shtick because they want that reference in.
