Gundam Versus (ガンダムバーサス) is a video game for the PlayStation 4, first revealed at the 2016 PlayStation Tokyo Game Show press conference and is the fifth generation in the Gundam VS series. It was released in Japan and Asian territories on July 6 with a North American and European release slated for September 29.

So...this is a thing.

A Gundam game that looks REALLY good, and isn't some Dynasty Warriors spin-off.

Reminds me of MSG: Gundam vs Zeta Gundam, my favorite (or at least top 3) MSG games.
:D

And, yeah...it's pretty fun.
There's some weird things going on with the death animations, but it's a demo so hopefully it's been fixed.

depending on how much story it comes with, I'm probably game. At the very least I own the PS3 gundam launch game, so it's not like Versus will end up as the worst gundam game in my collection.

This series has had a competitive following for years. In most anime fgc tournaments you'd see it being played. I don't know anything about it personally though.

I'll raise you the Crossfire with a copy of 'Battle Assault 3 Featuring Gundam SEED'.
Both games are bad, there's just no way around it, but I think BA3FGS was worse given how GOOD Battle Assault 2 was.

Have you tried the demo/trial version on PSN?

There is a demo on PSN.
Features several mods and an insane number of mecha to play around with.

Got me to pre-order the game.

I'm probably a bad example, but the Versus series was half the reason I bought my ps3 and ps4. I was hooked on the series when it started on the psp and been loving it since.

I would say most gundam games on console are bad to garbage. Gundam UC had the most potential to become a perfect gundam game if it wasn't due to simplicity and awkward controls. On PC there's a pretty good one called Mobile Suit Gundam Online with 100 player battles but, if I remember correctly, was japan only so you'll need to use a vpn.

I think there's several good games that happen to be Gundam.

Zeonic Front, Gundam vs Zeta Gundam, Battle Masters (1, 2, and Meister (whatever the PAL/NTSC-J) name was).

Probably my favorite 'mech game' was on the PSP...Macross Ace Frontier.
Just a fantastic game, even if I did need a guide to play it.

Love me some Mecha fights. Any Gundam Wing characters? Always pissed me off we never got all the Gundams in the Dynasty Warriors games.

There seemed to be all of main heroes, plus two villains.

Hey crossfire wasn't that bad, it ran like ass and could barely sustain 5 FPS when there was more than 2 suits on screen but I rather like that the game was skewing a bit more toward "simulation". Because hit location mattered and getting shoot in the chest would kill you really quickly you had to be careful with your positioning and where the enemy were, shield were actually shield in that they only blocked shoot that it the shield. Also the suits played really differently rather than just feel like visual variation, the feeling of powering up when you finally got a new suits was great (when I finally upgraded from a DOM to a kampfer it felt so great).

I'd love more game in that veins, plus its fun to play a grunt every so often.

I'm not too stocked about versus for essentially the exact opposite reason that I liked crossfire, I'm guessing all the suits are more or less as strong (ie original gundam rx78-2 can go toe to toe with the nu gundam) and none of the suits peculiarity end up translating to actual ability (I'm guessing funnel are only use for special attack rather than as actual autonomous weapon).

As for other good gundam game, zeonic front was good and unique, worth tracking down but has a very steeps learning curve.

I have been aware of these types of Gundam games for a while if you go to a japanese arcade they are kinda hard to miss tbh they seem insanely popular over there.

Dont have much experience with them myself but tried the demo and I liked it despite the low detail textures the movement and combat was a lot of fun so I have ordered it hopefully I can find an online opponent when the game comes out here because I could not with the demo.

There are noticeable differences in health, firepower, and mobility but the stat gap is(usually) never so wide that the right amount of skill won't overcome it. Even the weakest mobile suit will have a chance against the strongest one if the skill gap is wide enough. Granted with a roster of 90ish suits some are bound to feel similar to each other. There are 4 rankings that reflect how good a mobile suit is. Generally speaking, rank 4 and 3 for grunt suits and their higher performance variants where as 2 and 1 are for Gundams and high performance non gundam suits.

Also the higher a mobile suit's ranking the higher its unit cost will be. In versus you have a life gauge that depletes every time you die. Obviously the better your mobile suits the less times you can die before you gauge depletes and you lose.

The Wii had a better running/looking/playing Gundam game...the WII...than Crossfire.
-Hell, Journey to Jaburo was miles above it...and it was a bit more 'simulation'.

I always thought Zeonic Front was basically 'SOCOM With ROBOTS'...maybe my memory isn't as good as it used to be?
Still an great game, very underrated.

If you want a really good 'not gundam mecha game' try R.A.D.: Robot Alchemic Drive.

What are some good Gundam games for PS2 and onwards?
Mileage may vary but...

Mobile Suit Gundam: MS Sensen 0079 (Wii)
-Japan only release, there USED to be a fan-patch out there to English it up a bit for easier play.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo (PS2)
-More 'simulation' than most Gundam games, bit difficult to master.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front (PS2)
-It's SOCOM...WITH MECHA.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Lost War Chronicles (PS2)
-Japan Only. Fantastic game, I have an English patch for it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space (PS2)
-Not a bad game, can be a bit vertigo inducing in the chaos.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon (PS2)
-Solid game.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam (PS2)
-Really not point in buy FvZ with this game in your possession. Every thing good about FvZ is turned GREAT.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny: Rengou vs. Z.A.F.T. II (PS2)
-Japan Only. Fun game. I think the portable version has an English patch out there.

MS Saga: A New Dawn (PS2)
-Tactics game set in the 'Gundam-ish-verse', very much a 'must play' for Gundam/tactics fans.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 (PS2/3)
-Probably the best of the four or so 'DW' Gundam games, just depends on preferences.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3 (PS3)
-Not a bad game, some like it more than 2. Just skip the 'reborn/rebirth' shit, DWG1 isn't every good either.

Gundam with SOCOM sounds really good. Thanks for that.
